Chapter 14 - CAROLINE APOLOGIZED FIRSTCaroline wrote to Grace six months later.

The letter was short.
No excuses.
I moved your cane because I wanted Madeline to think I was funny.
Then:
I knew you were scared and kept doing it.
And:
I’m sorry. You don’t owe me forgiveness.
Grace listened to the letter through her screen reader.
Then asked:
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She didn’t.
Madeline’s apology came later.
Much later.
It began badly.
I was under pressure.
Grace stopped listening.
Three months later, another version arrived.
This one said:
I thought having a powerful family meant consequences were something adults negotiated for me.
Grace kept listening.
Then:
When you reported me, I treated your need for safety as an attack on me.
Better.
Finally:
I took your cane because I knew it made you vulnerable. That was cruel.
Grace was quiet.
She did not forgive immediately.

But she saved the letter.
That was enough.
