Chapter 5 - THE STAIRCASE WAS NOT THE ONLY THING HE DONATEDThe school’s financial records explained much.
Richard Prescott had funded:
The staircase renovation.
Athletic programs.
Two faculty fellowships.
A new accessibility initiative.
That last one nearly made me laugh.
The brochure featured a photograph of Grace.
She had not known the Prescotts funded it.
“Building an Inclusive Westbridge.”
Meanwhile, Madeline had been hiding Grace’s cane.
But donations were not the illegal part.
The problem was how administrators responded to them.
Emails told the story.
Watkins to Whitman:
Madeline’s situation needs discretion. Richard is finalizing the spring pledge.
Another:
Grace’s mother is persistent.
Whitman:
Keep this out of formal discipline if possible.
Then:
We don’t want a donor conflict over adolescent behavior.
There it was.
No bribe.
No written bargain.
Just fear.
The school had taught itself to anticipate what wealthy parents wanted.
Then act accordingly.
Richard never needed to say:
Protect my daughter.
Everyone already understood the value of keeping him happy.

That was more dangerous than direct corruption.
Because people could still tell themselves they were acting independently.
