Chapter 4 - MADELINE’S FATHER CAME TO THE SCHOOLRichard Prescott arrived before sunset.

He did not knock before entering the conference room.
He simply walked in.
Tall.
Expensive suit.
Two phones.
He looked at Madeline first.
“Are you okay?”
Not Grace.
His daughter.
Madeline nodded dramatically.
“This woman recorded me.”
He looked at me.
“Who are you?”
“Sarah Mitchell.”
“Parent?”
“Former parent.”
He frowned.
Then recognized my name.
My nonprofit had worked with several state education boards.
His tone changed slightly.
Not respectful.
More cautious.
“I’m sure we can resolve this.”
Dr. Shaw said:
“We are investigating.”
Richard glanced at her.
“And you are?”
She introduced herself.
His posture changed again.
He knew the commission.
Probably because his company had government contracts.
He sat.
“Madeline made a poor joke.”
Grace’s face tightened.
Richard continued.
“She’s seventeen.”
Dr. Shaw asked:
“Did she hide Grace’s mobility aid?”
“She moved a cane.”
“No.”
Dr. Shaw’s voice stayed calm.
“She removed a mobility aid from a blind student on a staircase.”
Richard exhaled.
“Fine.”
Then:
“What are you looking for here?”
There it was.
The language of negotiation.
Settlement.
Price.
Dr. Shaw said:
“Compliance.”
Richard almost smiled.
“I’ve given this school over eight million dollars.”
Grace whispered:
“That’s not an answer.”
Everyone heard.
Richard turned toward her.
For one second, I saw irritation.
Then he remembered the room.
He said:
“I’m sorry you were upset.”
Laura immediately responded:
“No.”
Richard frowned.
She continued.
“You are not apologizing because she was upset.”
Silence.
“You apologize because your daughter did something dangerous.”
May you like
Richard looked annoyed now.
This family had not expected anyone to correct the grammar of their power.
