Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Was Supposed To See

Nobody spoke.

The video played silently at first.

A younger version of me stood in the hallway.

Seven years younger.

No wedding ring.

No expensive suit.

No carefully practiced smile.

Just a terrified man staring at a closed door.

Gabriella looked at the screen.

Then slowly looked back at me.

“Ethan…”

I couldn’t meet her eyes.

Because I knew what was coming.

The footage showed me reaching toward the nursery door.

Then stopping.

Then stepping away.

The guests watched every second.

Every hesitation.

Every choice.

The boy, Noah, stood beside Gabriella.

His face was wet with tears.

“That’s the night my mommy died.””

His voice was barely audible.

A woman in the front row whispered, “What did he do?””

I wanted to explain.

I wanted to control the story.

I had always been good at controlling stories.

But for the first time in my life, I had no words.

The screen changed.

A second camera angle appeared.

Inside the nursery.

The quality was poor.

The image was grainy.

But everyone could see a woman sitting on the floor.

Lena.

She looked exhausted.

She held a baby in her arms.

Noah.

Even after seven years, I knew exactly what she looked like.

Her tired smile.

Her messy hair.

The way she always hummed when she was scared.

Gabriella covered her mouth.

“Stop this.””

But Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“She deserves to know.””

The video continued.

Lena looked toward the camera.

She knew it was there.

She knew someone could hear her.

“Ethan,” she said.

The sound came through the speakers.

My name.

Her voice.

The entire room heard it.

“Please don’t do this.””

A murmur moved through the guests.

Gabriella looked at me.

“Do what?””

I stayed silent.

On the screen, Lena began crying.

“You promised me you would protect him.””

The baby started crying.

Lena held him closer.

Then the nursery door shook.

Everyone watching knew what that meant.

Someone was outside.

Me.

A younger version of myself.

Margaret stepped forward.

“He locked them inside.””

The guests gasped.

“That’s impossible,” someone said.

But Margaret looked at the screen.

“Watch.””

The footage showed my younger self placing something near the door.

A small object.

A chair.

Blocking it.

The room erupted.

“No.””

“I can’t believe this.””

Gabriella stepped away from me.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“You locked them in?””

I finally found my voice.

“It wasn’t like that.””

The boy turned toward me.

“Then what was it like?””

I looked at Noah.

And for a moment, I didn’t see a stranger.

I saw the baby I once held.

The child whose first steps I missed.

The son I convinced myself I had no choice but to abandon.

“I was afraid,” I said.

Gabriella stared at me.

“Afraid of what?””

I had spent years avoiding that question.

Because the truth was worse than any lie.

“I thought…”

My voice failed.

Margaret stepped closer.

“You thought if Lena disappeared, nobody would find out.””

The guests went silent again.

Gabriella looked horrified.

“You let a woman die?””

“No!””

The word escaped me.

Everyone froze.

Because it was the first honest thing I had said.

“No,” I repeated.

I looked at the screen.

“I didn’t want her to die.””

Margaret’s expression softened slightly.

But only slightly.

“Wanting something and causing something are not always different.””

Noah looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“Why did you leave me?””

That question hurt more than the accusations.

Because I had an answer.

A terrible answer.

One I had never spoken.

“Because I was told you weren’t safe with me.””

Gabriella frowned.

“What does that mean?””

I looked toward the entrance.

Toward the place where Noah had appeared.

And suddenly I realized something.

The boy had not come here by accident.

Someone had sent him.

Someone who knew everything.

Someone who wanted the truth revealed.

My phone vibrated.

Everyone heard it.

The sound cut through the silence.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

One message.

My hands began shaking as I opened it.

*You thought you buried the past. You only buried the evidence.*

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

Not from seven years ago.

From today.

A picture of Noah standing outside the wedding hall before he entered.

And behind him was someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should have been dead.

I stopped breathing.

Gabriella noticed my face.

“Who is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because beneath the photo was one final sentence.

*Ask your son who brought him here.*

I slowly looked at Noah.

The little boy who had just destroyed my wedding.

The little boy who had exposed my darkest secret.

And for the first time, I wondered if I had been hiding from the wrong person all these years.

Because Noah wasn’t the threat.

May you like

Someone else was watching.

And they had been waiting for the perfect moment to open the door.
