Chapter 7: The Brother Hidden From Me

The man standing at the entrance didn’t move.

Neither did I.

Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

I had spent my entire life believing I was an only child.

My father had told me that.

My mother had told me that.

Every family record I had ever seen confirmed it.

And yet, standing in my wedding hall, surrounded by the ruins of everything I believed, was a man who looked like a stranger and a memory at the same time.

Same dark eyes.

Same sharp jawline.

Same expression my father used to wear when he already knew more than everyone else in the room.

The stranger looked at me.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

With sadness.

“I’m sorry it had to happen this way, Ethan.””

My throat felt dry.

“Who are you?””

The man stepped forward.

“My name is Adrian Cole.””

The room became silent.

A silence so deep I could hear the rain hitting the glass windows outside.

Cole.

My family name.

The name I had carried my entire life.

The name that suddenly felt like it belonged to strangers.

Daniel stepped backward.

For the first time that night, he looked genuinely afraid.

“Adrian.””

The man looked at him.

“Daniel.””

Their voices carried years of history.

Years I didn’t know existed.

I looked between them.

“You know each other.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Unfortunately.””

Victoria suddenly spoke.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You’ve said that my entire life.””

My eyes moved to Victoria.

“Your entire life?””

Adrian looked back at me.

“Yes.””

He took a breath.

“Because Victoria wanted everyone to believe I didn’t exist.””

My head spun.

Another secret.

Another person erased.

“How?””

Adrian looked toward the old wedding screen.

At the frozen image of my family’s destruction.

“Because I was proof that your father wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She stopped.

“Because he’s lying.””

But her voice lacked confidence.

Adrian noticed.

“You always hated that I survived.””

The room froze.

I stared.

“Survived what?””

Adrian looked at me.

“The fire.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What fire?””

Nobody answered.

Then Margaret whispered,

“The house fire.””

I looked at her.

“The one that killed my father?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

I remembered that night.

I was twelve years old.

The smell of smoke.

The flashing lights.

My mother screaming.

My father gone.

The story I was told was simple.

An accident.

A tragedy.

A terrible night.

But nothing in my life had ever been simple.

Adrian continued.

“I was sixteen.””

My eyes widened.

“You were there?””

He nodded.

“I was inside the house.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Why don’t I remember you?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Because your mother made sure you didn’t.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

I wanted to reject it.

Because if Adrian was telling the truth, then my mother had spent my entire life lying to me.

“She loved you,” Adrian said softly.

That confused me.

“What?””

“She loved you more than anything.””

“Then why hide this?””

“Because she was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Adrian looked directly at Victoria.

“From the family.””

The room went quiet.

Victoria’s expression became cold.

“You have no proof.””

Adrian smiled.

“I have more than proof.””

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small folder.

And handed it to the officer.

The officer opened it.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

“Documents.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Documents your father left behind.””

I stepped closer.

“What kind of documents?””

“The kind that explain why Daniel tried to destroy Lena.””

My eyes moved to Daniel.

He looked furious.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

Adrian smiled slightly.

“And you were supposed to be smarter.””

The officer looked through the papers.

“There are financial records.””

Adrian nodded.

“Money transfers. Fake companies. Hidden accounts.””

He looked at me.

“Daniel and Victoria weren’t stealing from your father.””

A pause.

“They were stealing from you.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

“Your father found out before he died.””

My hands tightened.

“And the fire?””

Adrian’s expression became darker.

“Wasn’t an accident.””

The words hit the room.

Everyone reacted.

“No,” I whispered.

Adrian looked at me.

“Your father was going to expose them.””

My mind flashed back.

The night before the fire.

My father had sat beside my bed.

He had looked tired.

Afraid.

I remembered asking him what was wrong.

He had smiled and said:

“Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones you need to watch carefully.””

At the time, I thought it was just advice.

Now it sounded like a warning.

“He knew,” I whispered.

Adrian nodded.

“He knew everything.””

Victoria suddenly laughed.

A quiet, bitter laugh.

“You’re all acting like he was some innocent hero.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“Your father was a liar too.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

“No.””

Victoria looked at me.

“You want the truth, Ethan?””

I didn’t answer.

She continued.

“Your father built this empire by destroying people.””

The room became uncomfortable.

“He ruined competitors. He made enemies. He controlled everyone around him.””

She pointed toward Adrian.

“And he abandoned his first son.””

Adrian looked away.

For a moment, I saw something.

A wound.

Not anger.

Pain.

Victoria turned back to me.

“You think you were special because he chose you?””

She smiled.

“He chose you because you were easier to control.””

My chest tightened.

“Stop.””

But she continued.

“He erased Adrian because he was inconvenient.””

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“She’s right about one thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“My father made mistakes.””

That surprised me.

“But he spent the last years of his life trying to fix them.””

He looked at me.

“Especially with you.””

I didn’t understand.

“Why?””

Adrian handed me another paper.

A letter.

My father’s handwriting.

Again.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Ethan,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect both of my sons.

I stopped.

Both.

I hid Adrian because I thought distance would keep him safe.

I hid the truth from you because I thought innocence was a gift.

I was wrong.

My vision blurred.

My greatest mistake was believing secrets could protect the people I loved.

I looked up.

Adrian watched me.

The letter continued.

Ethan, you must know something.

Noah is not only your son.

I froze.

My eyes moved down.

He is the key to ending what I started.

I looked at Noah.

The little boy who had entered my wedding covered in dirt.

The child everyone had called a problem.

The child everyone tried to remove.

But my father had known.

He had planned for him.

The officer closed the file.

“I need everyone to stay here.””

Victoria suddenly turned toward the exit.

Then stopped.

Because Adrian was blocking the door.

“You’re not leaving.””

She stared at him.

“You think you’ve won?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“This isn’t over.””

I frowned.

“What else is there?””

Adrian looked at Noah.

Then at Lena.

Then back at me.

“The person who started all of this isn’t Daniel.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then who?””

Adrian’s expression became serious.

“The person who ordered your father’s death.””

Nobody spoke.

“Who?””

Adrian looked toward Victoria.

And for the first time…

Victoria looked afraid.

“Your mother.””

My entire body froze.

“No.””

Adrian didn’t look away.

“I wish I was wrong.””

The wedding hall went silent.

Because the one person I had spent my entire life trusting…

May you like

The one person I thought protected me from the world…

Might have been the person I needed protection from.
