Chapter 8: The Woman Who Raised Me

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Not because I had proof.

Not because I had an explanation.

Because some truths are too painful for the heart to accept.

My mother.

The woman who held my hand when I was afraid of thunderstorms.

The woman who sat beside me after my father died.

The woman who told me that family was everything.

Adrian was saying she was the reason my family was destroyed.

“No,” I repeated.

Adrian didn’t argue.

He just looked at me with the kind of sadness people have when they know something you don’t want to know.

“I wanted to believe the same thing.””

I stared at him.

“You didn’t know her.””

A flicker of pain crossed his face.

“I knew her better than you think.””

“Then you know she would never do that.””

Adrian looked down.

“She saved my life once.””

The room went silent.

I blinked.

“What?””

“She also almost destroyed it.””

I shook my head.

“This is impossible.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Ethan…”

I turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

“Everyone keeps saying my name like they know what’s best for me.””

My voice grew louder.

“My father lied. My mother lied. Daniel lied. Victoria lied.””

I looked around the room.

“Who else?””

Nobody answered.

That was the worst part.

Because I knew there were still secrets.

There were always more secrets.

Lena stepped toward me.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

Her eyes were full of sympathy.

But I didn’t want sympathy.

I wanted the truth.

“Did you know?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“About my mother?””

She nodded slowly.

“Some of it.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Of course.””

“Ethan, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, because every time someone says that, another piece of my life disappears.””

Noah stood beside her, watching me.

The fear in his face brought me back.

Not for myself.

For him.

I lowered my voice.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked confused.

“For what?””

“For all of this.””

He shook his head.

“You didn’t make the secrets.””

The words were simple.

But they hit me harder than anything anyone had said.

Because a seven-year-old child understood something I had spent years avoiding.

I couldn’t change what happened.

But I could decide what happened next.

I turned back to Adrian.

“Tell me.””

Everyone became still.

“All of it.””

Adrian nodded.

Then he walked toward the center of the room.

“Your mother wasn’t always part of Victoria’s plan.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she was used.””

“By who?””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Don’t.””

Adrian ignored him.

“By Daniel.””

The room shifted.

Daniel laughed.

“You’re still trying to blame me?””

“Yes.””

Adrian’s voice was calm.

“Because you were the one who found her weakness.””

My stomach tightened.

“What weakness?””

Adrian looked at me.

“You.””

I didn’t understand.

“My mother’s weakness was me?””

“Yes.””

He took a breath.

“She loved you more than anything.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like the mother I remembered.

“Then why betray me?””

“Because Daniel convinced her she was protecting you.””

I stared.

“She thought she was?””

Adrian nodded.

“She believed your father was going to destroy everything.””

“Why?””

“Because your father discovered the truth about Adrian.””

He paused.

“About me.””

I looked at him.

“What truth?””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“That my father had a second family.””

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

“You mean…”

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Your father had another life before he met your mother.””

My mind struggled to process it.

My father.

The man I admired.

The man I spent years trying to become.

Had secrets too.

“He loved my mother?””

Adrian looked away.

“I don’t know.””

That answer surprised me.

“But I know he loved me.””

A painful silence followed.

“My mother found out about me when I was twelve.””

Adrian continued.

“She was furious.””

I looked down.

“Because my father cheated?””

“Yes.””

“But she stayed.””

“She stayed because of you.””

I looked up.

“Me?””

Adrian nodded.

“She was afraid if she left, you would lose everything.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“So she knew about you.””

“Yes.””

“And she hid you.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Because Victoria told her I was dangerous.””

I looked toward Victoria.

She stood silently.

Watching.

Waiting.

“She convinced your mother that I would destroy your inheritance.””

I frowned.

“But you were a child.””

Victoria’s voice finally came.

“Children become adults.””

Everyone turned.

She looked directly at Adrian.

“And adults become threats.””

My stomach turned.

“You really believed that?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at me.

“You have no idea what your father created.””

“Stop talking like you’re the victim.””

Her eyes sharpened.

“I am.””

The confidence in her voice was unsettling.

“I spent my life watching men make decisions and clean up their disasters.””

She pointed toward Adrian.

“Your father abandoned him.””

Then toward me.

“He controlled you.””

Then toward Noah.

“And now everyone expects this child to fix everything.””

Noah stepped closer to Lena.

Victoria continued.

“Your family has always been built on secrets.””

Adrian interrupted.

“Because people like you created them.””

Victoria smiled.

“You still think you’re different.””

She looked at me.

“You’re not.””

I felt anger rising.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

I looked at Victoria.

“You spent years manipulating my family.””

She opened her mouth.

I continued.

“You used Daniel.””

Her expression changed.

“You used my mother.””

Silence.

“You used me.””

For the first time, Victoria had no response.

I turned away.

But then Daniel spoke.

“You still don’t understand the biggest secret.””

I stopped.

Slowly turned back.

“What now?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

Not defeated.

Exhausted.

Like he was tired of carrying the truth.

“The inheritance was never the goal.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel glanced at Noah.

“The money was only protection.””

“Protection from what?””

He looked at Adrian.

“From the real enemy.””

A chill moved through me.

I was tired of those words.

But I knew they mattered.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the wedding guests.

At the cameras.

At the people who had watched my life collapse.

Then he said:

“Your father didn’t create the Cole empire alone.””

Nobody moved.

“He belonged to something bigger.””

Adrian’s face changed.

Because he knew.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The organization.””

Adrian went pale.

My heart sank.

“What organization?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The one that has controlled your family for generations.””

The lights above us flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The same way they had when the power went out before.

But this time, nobody screamed.

Because everyone was too afraid.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small black card.

And placed it on the table.

A symbol was carved into it.

I had seen that symbol before.

On my father’s old documents.

On a ring he used to wear.

A ring I thought was just a family piece.

My hands went cold.

“Your father wasn’t running from enemies.””

Daniel whispered.

“He was running from his own partners.””

Adrian looked at the card.

Then at me.

“Ethan…”

His voice was different now.

Afraid.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“That symbol…”

A pause.

“It means someone from the organization is here.””

I looked around the wedding hall.

At the guests.

At the people who had been watching.

At the strangers pretending to celebrate.

Then my eyes stopped.

On one person.

Someone who had been silent all night.

Someone who had never looked surprised.

Someone who knew every secret before it was revealed.

Gabriella’s father.

He slowly stood from his chair.

And smiled.

“Finally.””

The entire room froze.

May you like

He adjusted his suit.

“Now we can stop pretending this was ever a wedding.””
