Chapter 3: The Secret In The Darkness

The lights went out for exactly eight seconds.

But those eight seconds felt like a lifetime.

The wedding hall disappeared into darkness.

Two hundred people gasped at once.

Someone screamed.

A chair scraped violently across the floor.

And somewhere beside me, Noah cried out.

“Mom!””

My body moved before my mind could think.

I reached toward the sound.

Not because of guilt.

Not because of appearances.

Because for the first time in seven years, I was afraid of losing him.

“Stay where you are!”” I shouted.

The darkness swallowed my voice.

A second later, emergency lights flickered on.

The elegant ballroom transformed into something unfamiliar.

The crystal chandeliers were dead.

The wedding decorations looked abandoned.

The white flowers along the aisle cast long shadows across the marble floor.

And Lena was gone.

My heart dropped.

“No.””

I pushed through the crowd.

“Lena?””

No answer.

“Lena!””

Then I saw her.

Near the side entrance.

She was standing there, holding Noah tightly against her.

But her face had changed.

The confidence she had walked in with was gone.

She was staring at someone.

Someone behind me.

I turned.

And saw him.

Daniel Price.

My company executive.

The man who had worked beside me for ten years.

The man who knew every detail about my life.

He stood near the back wall.

Completely calm.

Too calm.

“What are you doing here?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“I was invited.””

“No, you weren’t.””

He smiled slightly.

That smile made my stomach tighten.

“I was invited to your wedding.””

“You came alone?””

He looked toward Lena.

“No.””

The room became silent.

Lena held Noah closer.

“Tell them.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“Tell them what?””

“That you found me.””

A murmur moved through the guests.

I looked at Lena.

“You knew he was coming?””

She nodded.

“He’s the reason I came.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Still blaming me after all these years?””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Lena looked at him.

“It means he knows the truth.””

Daniel adjusted his jacket.

“Careful, Lena.””

The way he said her name made my skin crawl.

Not like he was speaking to an enemy.

Like he was speaking to someone he owned.

Gabriella stepped beside me.

“Ethan, who is this man?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I suddenly realized something.

Daniel had been there through everything.

The company collapse.

My father’s death.

My relationship with Lena ending.

Every major moment of my adult life.

He had always been nearby.

Always helpful.

Always ready with advice.

A loyal friend.

Or someone pretending to be one.

“Daniel,” I said slowly.

“What happened seven years ago?””

His expression didn’t change.

But his eyes did.

Just for a second.

Fear.

Then it was gone.

“You’re really going to believe her?””

Lena stepped forward.

“I have proof.””

Daniel looked at the envelope in her hand.

And for the first time, he looked nervous.

“What’s inside?””

Lena smiled.

“The letter Ethan’s mother wrote before she died.””

My entire body went cold.

My mother.

She had been gone for years.

And somehow, her name was connected to this.

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Give me that.””

Everyone noticed.

Because it wasn’t a request.

It was a demand.

Lena stepped back.

“No.””

Daniel took one step forward.

“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””

“No,” Lena said quietly.

“You don’t understand what I’ve been holding.””

She turned toward me.

“Ethan, your mother discovered what Daniel was doing.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What?””

Nobody moved.

Daniel’s face became unreadable.

Lena continued.

“Before Lena died, before everything happened, your mother found financial records.””

Daniel laughed.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Records showing money transfers.””

She looked at me.

“Payments made from your accounts.””

I frowned.

“My accounts?””

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

Seven years ago, I had believed my company had suffered a random financial attack.

A mistake.

A betrayal from strangers.

But if Lena was right…

Someone had used my own money against me.

Daniel stepped forward.

“This is insane.””

Margaret finally spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She held her purse tightly.

“I saw the documents.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You?””

Margaret’s voice shook.

“I worked for Ethan’s family for eighteen years. I knew every account. Every signature.””

She looked at me.

“And I knew the signature on those transfers was fake.””

The room erupted.

I looked at Daniel.

“You forged my signature?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Gabriella looked between us.

“Ethan…”

I barely heard her.

Because suddenly memories started connecting.

The sudden business problems.

The arguments with Lena.

The night she accused me of changing.

The night I thought she betrayed me.

Daniel had been the person standing between us.

Always.

“He told me you were leaving me,” Lena whispered.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He told me you wanted custody of Noah.””

My breathing stopped.

“He said you were planning to take my son away.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know that now.””

She looked down.

“But back then, I was scared.””

A painful silence filled the room.

“He showed me fake messages.””

My hands trembled.

“Messages from me?””

She nodded.

“He made me believe you hated me.””

Daniel finally interrupted.

“Enough.””

His voice was louder.

Everyone turned.

“You’re rewriting history because you failed.””

Lena looked at him.

“You locked us away.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I saw it.

And so did everyone else.

“What did you do?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“You really want to know?””

His voice became colder.

“After everything I did for you?””

I stepped forward.

“You destroyed my family.””

He laughed.

“Your family?””

He looked around the room.

“At this wedding? This fake perfect life?””

Gabriella stiffened.

Daniel continued.

“You think you built this?””

I stared.

“What are you talking about?””

“I built you.””

The words hung in the air.

Daniel smiled.

“I cleaned your mistakes. I fixed your failures. I made people respect you.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He walked closer.

“You were always weak, Ethan.””

A few guests looked uncomfortable.

But Daniel didn’t care anymore.

“I watched you choose Lena over your family name. I watched you throw away opportunities because you wanted to play the hero.””

His eyes moved to Noah.

“So I fixed the problem.””

My stomach turned.

“What problem?””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Lena.””

Noah held his mother tighter.

Daniel continued.

“She was ruining everything.””

I felt something inside me break.

“You tried to kill her?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

“I only wanted her gone.””

The room went silent.

Lena’s face went pale.

“Ethan…”

I understood.

The nursery.

The locked door.

The fire alarm records.

The missing security footage.

All of it.

Daniel had been there.

But one question remained.

“If you did all this…”

I looked at Lena.

“Why did she survive?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

For the first time.

He looked afraid.

Because he knew the answer.

Before he could speak, the large screen behind the altar suddenly turned on again.

Everyone jumped.

A new video appeared.

Not the old security footage.

A different recording.

A hidden camera.

The image showed Daniel.

Seven years younger.

Standing inside my house.

Holding something in his hand.

A key.

And beside him…

Was my mother.

Alive.

The video played.

My mother looked terrified.

“Daniel, what have you done?””

Daniel looked at her.

And said the words that made my entire world collapse.

“I did exactly what you taught me, Mrs. Cole.””

The screen froze.

Everyone stared.

But I stared harder.

Because my mother’s voice came from the speakers next.

May you like

“Ethan can never know the truth.””

And then the video ended.
