Chapter 5: The Truth Noah Never Knew
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not even Victoria.
She simply stood there, watching the damage her words had caused.
That was what frightened me most.
Not anger.
Not panic.
Confidence.
She knew exactly what she had done.
She had walked into my wedding, watched my life collapse, and now she was enjoying every second of it.
I looked at Lena.
“Is it true?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Ethan…”
“Is Noah my son?””
The question sounded cruel the moment it left my mouth.
Because I hated that I had asked it.
I hated that someone had put doubt between me and a child who had already lost so much.
Noah looked between us.
He didn’t understand the conversation.
But he understood the feeling.
He understood that adults were talking about him like he wasn’t standing there.
“Mom?””
Lena immediately pulled him closer.
“Noah, don’t listen.””
Victoria laughed softly.
“Why not?””
She looked at the boy.
“He deserves to know.””
“Enough,” I said.
My voice was low.
But everyone heard it.
Victoria turned toward me.
“What?””
“Leave him out of this.””
She smiled.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The Ethan everyone believes exists.””
I stared at her.
“The protector.””
She walked closer.
“The man who saves children. The man who sacrifices himself. The man who thinks he is better than the family he came from.””
My jaw tightened.
“You don’t know me.””
“I know you better than anyone.””
The words disturbed me.
Because there was truth behind them.
Victoria had been around my entire life.
She attended my birthdays.
She sat at my father’s business meetings.
She was there when I graduated.
When my father died.
When I inherited the company.
She knew every weakness I had.
Every fear.
Every mistake.
“Why?”” I asked.
Her expression changed.
Slightly.
“Why what?””
“Why destroy me?””
The room became quiet.
Even Daniel looked at her.
Victoria stared at me for a long moment.
Then she answered.
“Because your father chose you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He chose you over everyone.””
Her voice became colder.
“He built everything for you.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“It explains everything.””
She walked toward the altar.
Toward the place where I was supposed to make vows.
“Your father spent his entire life building the Cole name. He created a legacy.””
She touched one of the white roses.
“And then he decided that his son was more important than that legacy.””
I didn’t understand.
“You’re angry because my father loved me?””
“No.””
Her eyes met mine.
“I’m angry because he trusted you.””
The words hung in the air.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the letter in my hand.
“What does that have to do with Lena?””
Victoria smiled.
“Everything.””
Lena stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Victoria looked amused.
“Still lying?””
“I’m not lying.””
“Then tell him.””
Silence.
A painful silence.
I looked at Lena.
“Tell me what?””
She looked at Noah.
Then closed her eyes.
Like she had been carrying a weight for years.
“When I met you…”
Her voice trembled.
“I wasn’t alone.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
“I had another child.””
Nobody spoke.
The room felt smaller.
“What?””
Lena swallowed.
“I was seventeen.””
Victoria interrupted.
“Tell him the rest.””
“Stop.””
“No.””
Victoria’s voice sharpened.
“He deserves every truth tonight.””
Lena looked at me.
“I had a son.””
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
“A son?””
She nodded.
“But he died.””
The anger inside me froze.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came out quietly.
Lena nodded.
“He was sick.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I spent years blaming myself.””
Noah looked at her.
“Mom…”
She knelt beside him.
“Your brother would have loved you.””
The room softened for a moment.
Even Victoria looked away.
But then Victoria spoke again.
“And that’s why she kept secrets.””
I turned.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria looked at Lena.
“You never told Ethan why you really stayed away after Noah was born.””
Lena stood.
“I stayed away because I was protecting him.””
“From what?””
Lena looked at me.
“From your family.””
The words hit differently.
Because suddenly every person in the room had a reason to lie.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
Victoria laughed.
“Convenient.””
“No,” Lena said.
“Truthful.””
She looked at me.
“Your father discovered something about Victoria.””
Victoria’s face hardened.
“Careful.””
But Lena continued.
“He found out she had been moving money from the family accounts.””
The room erupted again.
I looked at Victoria.
“Is that true?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Ethan, don’t let them manipulate you.””
I turned sharply.
“You’re the last person who should say that.””
His expression darkened.
Lena continued.
“Your father was going to expose her.””
“And?””
“She found out.””
A cold silence followed.
“What happened next?””
Lena looked down.
“He died.””
Nobody spoke.
The accusation was enormous.
But there was something worse.
The way Victoria reacted.
Not shock.
Not pain.
Annoyance.
Like she was tired of hearing an old story.
“You have no proof.””
Lena nodded.
“I didn’t.””
She reached into her bag.
“But now I do.””
She pulled out a small recorder.
Victoria’s expression changed.
“What is that?””
“A conversation.””
She looked at me.
“Between Victoria and Daniel.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
He immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
The security guards moved between them.
Lena pressed a button.
The sound came through the speakers.
A recording.
Daniel’s voice.
Clear.
Cold.
“Once Ethan signs the marriage agreement, everything transfers.””
Victoria’s voice answered.
“And Noah?””
Daniel laughed.
“The boy won’t matter.””
My stomach turned.
The room went silent.
Then Victoria’s voice.
“Make sure Lena stays quiet.””
The recording ended.
No one breathed.
Gabriella stared at Victoria.
“You planned this wedding?””
Victoria looked at her.
“Not the wedding.””
She looked at me.
“The inheritance.””
My face went numb.
“What inheritance?””
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“Your father left everything to you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He stepped closer.
“But there was a condition.””
My heart pounded.
“What condition?””
Victoria answered.
“The money only became yours when you turned thirty-five and had a legitimate heir.””
I looked at Noah.
Then at Lena.
Understanding slowly formed.
The wedding.
The perfect image.
The family name.
It was never about love.
It was about control.
“You needed me married.””
Victoria smiled.
“Yes.””
“And Noah?””
“He was a complication.””
My fists tightened.
A seven-year-old boy.
A child.
A complication.
I looked at Daniel.
“You tried to erase my son.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
Instead, he looked at Noah.
“I tried to erase a problem.””
The room erupted.
I moved before thinking.
I grabbed Daniel’s jacket.
“You will never call him that again.””
Security rushed forward.
But Daniel only smiled.
Because even now…
Even after everything…
He wasn’t afraid.
“You still don’t understand.””
I let go.
“What?””
Daniel leaned closer.
And whispered.
“Your father didn’t leave the inheritance to you.””
I froze.
“What did you say?””
He smiled.
“He left it to Noah.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Victoria’s face changed.
For the first time tonight, she looked scared.
Daniel looked at me.
“And that’s the truth nobody wanted you to find.””
He glanced at Noah.
“The little boy you abandoned…”
May you like
A pause.
“…is the person who owns everything.””
