Chapter 4: The Mother I Thought I Knew
The screen went black.
But my mother’s voice stayed.
It echoed through the wedding hall.
“Ethan can never know the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to breathe.
For years, I had believed my mother was the one person in my life who never lied to me.
She was the woman who taught me how to tie my shoes.
The woman who sat beside my bed when I was sick.
The woman who told me that family was the only thing that mattered.
And now her voice had become another piece of evidence against me.
Against everything I believed.
“No.””
The word left my mouth before I realized I had spoken.
I shook my head.
“No. That video is fake.””
Daniel looked at me.
For the first time that night, he didn’t look confident.
He looked relieved.
Like the attention had finally moved away from him.
“Ethan…”
“Don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“Don’t say my name like you understand anything.””
The room watched me fall apart.
The same people who had arrived to celebrate my wedding were now watching my entire life collapse piece by piece.
Gabriella stood quietly beside me.
She didn’t reach for my hand.
She didn’t comfort me.
And somehow, that hurt more than anything.
Because I knew why.
She didn’t know who she was standing next to anymore.
I looked toward Lena.
“You knew about this.””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“I knew there was more.””
“But you didn’t tell me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“Seven years ago.””
The answer hit me.
Seven years ago.
Before everything disappeared.
Before Noah vanished from my life.
Before I convinced myself that the past was dead.
“What happened?””
Lena took a slow breath.
“Your mother came to me.””
The room became quiet again.
“She told me Daniel had betrayed you.””
I stared.
“Then why did the video show her helping him?””
Lena shook her head.
“Because your mother was afraid.””
“Afraid?””
“Yes.””
She looked at the screen.
“Your mother knew Daniel was dangerous.””
Daniel scoffed.
“Don’t listen to her.””
But nobody looked at him.
Not anymore.
Lena continued.
“She also knew something about you.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation scared me more than the answer.
“She knew you weren’t responsible for what happened that night.””
I frowned.
“What night?””
Lena looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“The night everyone thought I died.””
The words settled over the room.
I remembered that night differently than everyone else.
I remembered anger.
Fear.
Confusion.
I remembered fighting with Lena.
I remembered leaving.
I remembered waking up the next morning to find my entire world destroyed.
But there were pieces missing.
Pieces I had forced myself not to examine.
“What really happened?”” I asked.
Lena looked at Daniel.
“You tell him.””
Daniel laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“You still think you deserve the truth?””
I stepped toward him.
“You’re going to give it to me.””
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he smiled.
Not kindly.
Not warmly.
Like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“You want the truth?””
He glanced around the wedding hall.
“Fine.””
He walked toward the center of the room.
“I’ll give you the truth.””
Everyone backed away.
Because something about him had changed.
The mask was gone.
Daniel had spent years pretending to be my friend.
Now he no longer needed to pretend.
“You were always supposed to lose everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
He looked at Gabriella.
“You think this wedding was the beginning of your perfect life?””
Then he looked back at me.
“It was the final piece.””
“Final piece of what?””
Daniel smiled.
“The plan.””
My stomach tightened.
“What plan?””
“The plan your family started years ago.””
I looked at Margaret.
Then Lena.
Then the screen.
Nothing made sense.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father. Your mother. Everyone who built the Cole name.””
His voice lowered.
“They weren’t the people you thought they were.””
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to call him a liar.
But the evidence was everywhere.
And that terrified me.
“My father died when I was twenty-five.””
“Yes.””
“So how could he be involved?””
Daniel looked amused.
“Because your father left behind more than money.””
He reached into his pocket.
The security guards immediately moved.
But Daniel raised his hands.
“Relax.””
He pulled out a small envelope.
“Another letter.””
My chest tightened.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life hidden from me.
He tossed it toward the table.
Margaret picked it up.
She looked at the handwriting.
Then her face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Margaret.””
Her eyes met mine.
“It’s your father’s handwriting.””
The room became silent.
I opened the envelope.
My hands shook.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
But they changed everything.
Ethan, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
I stopped.
The words blurred.
I continued.
Your mother will tell you I betrayed the family. Daniel will tell you I deserved what happened.
My heart pounded.
Both are lies.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
I forced myself to continue.
The person you trust most is the person you should fear.
My eyes moved to Daniel.
He didn’t look surprised.
He looked angry.
The letter continued.
I discovered what Daniel was planning. I tried to stop him. But I was too late.
My hands tightened around the paper.
The child must be protected.
I froze.
Noah.
The letter was about Noah.
If anything happens to Lena, Ethan must never let Daniel take control.
The final line was written darker than the others.
Like my father had pressed the pen hard enough to tear the paper.
Do not trust the woman who stands beside Daniel.
I looked up slowly.
The room felt colder.
“Woman?””
Daniel smiled.
Finally.
A real smile.
Because he knew something I didn’t.
“Yes.””
He looked toward the entrance.
“You’re finally starting to understand.””
Everyone turned.
The ballroom doors opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She was elegant.
Expensive coat.
Perfect hair.
A face I had seen many times before.
A face from family photographs.
A face from charity events.
A face from my childhood.
My aunt.
Victoria Cole.
My father’s sister.
She walked into the room calmly.
Like she belonged there.
Gabriella whispered,
“Your aunt?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because Victoria looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“Hello, Ethan.””
My body went completely still.
“You knew?””
She tilted her head.
“Knew what?””
“That Daniel was doing this.””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Daniel wasn’t doing anything.””
A terrible silence followed.
“He was working for me.””
Noah grabbed Lena’s hand.
Margaret whispered,
“Oh my God.””
Victoria walked farther into the room.
“My nephew has spent years believing he was a victim.””
She looked around.
“Tonight, he finally learns the truth.””
I stared at her.
“What truth?””
Her expression hardened.
“That Lena was never the innocent woman you thought she was.””
Lena stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Victoria smiled.
“Still protecting him after all these years?””
Then she turned to me.
“Ask your precious Lena why she never told you about the child she had before Noah.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Lena’s face changed.
And that was all the answer I needed.
Victoria smiled.
“Ask her who Noah’s real father is.””
The wedding hall went silent.
Noah looked confused.
Gabriella looked at Lena.
And I looked at the woman I thought I had lost.
May you like
Because suddenly, I didn’t know who had saved me.
And I didn’t know who had destroyed me.
