Chapter 6: The Heir Nobody Protected

The words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

They floated in the air like another language.

Noah owns everything.

I stared at Daniel.

Waiting for him to laugh.

Waiting for the confession that it was another lie.

Another trick.

Because that was what tonight had become.

Every truth had a second truth hiding behind it.

Every person I trusted had another face.

“You’re lying.””

My voice was quiet.

Daniel smiled.

“Am I?””

I looked at Victoria.

She wasn’t smiling anymore.

That was the first thing that made me believe him.

Victoria had controlled every room she entered.

She had walked into my wedding like she owned the building.

She had exposed secrets without blinking.

But now…

She looked terrified.

“Victoria,” I said.

She looked away.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

No answer.

“Tell me.””

Her silence was louder than any confession.

Gabriella slowly stepped away from me.

“You really didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

“Know what?””

She looked at Noah.

“That everything happening tonight was connected to him.””

The boy stood frozen beside Lena.

He didn’t care about money.

He didn’t care about inheritance.

He only cared about one thing.

His mother.

And me.

The father who had disappeared from his life.

“I don’t understand,” I said.

Margaret stepped forward.

“I do.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked older than she had ten minutes ago.

Like the weight of every secret she carried had finally become visible.

“Your father changed his will three months before he died.””

I stared.

“My father never told me.””

“He wasn’t supposed to.””

“Why?””

Margaret looked at Noah.

“Because he knew someone would come after the child.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“He knew?””

She nodded.

“Your father discovered what Daniel and Victoria were doing.””

Daniel scoffed.

“Don’t make him into a hero.””

Margaret ignored him.

“He realized the family business was being stolen from the inside.””

She looked at me.

“He also realized you were too trusting.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“I thought Daniel was my friend.””

Margaret’s expression softened.

“He wanted you to think that.””

Daniel laughed.

“You’re all pretending you’re innocent.””

He looked around the room.

“But every person here benefited from Ethan being blind.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Ask Gabriella.””

The room went still.

Gabriella’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“Ask her why she agreed to marry you so quickly.””

My stomach tightened.

I turned toward her.

“Gabriella?””

She looked horrified.

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t listen to him.””

But she didn’t say he was wrong.

That was enough.

“Gabriella.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

The silence hurt.

“What were you going to tell me?””

She took a shaky breath.

“My father knew about the inheritance.””

My chest tightened.

Her father.

Another person.

Another secret.

“Your family knew?””

She nodded.

“My father’s company was struggling.””

I stared.

“So you married me because of money?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

But she couldn’t meet my eyes.

“I loved you.””

“Then why?””

She wiped a tear.

“Because my father convinced me that if I didn’t secure the marriage, everything would fall apart.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“So everyone knew.””

Nobody answered.

Everyone had known something.

Everyone except me.

I looked at Noah.

The only person in the room who had never lied to me.

A child who came into a wedding wearing torn clothes because he had no one else.

And somehow, he was the most honest person there.

I walked toward him slowly.

He watched me carefully.

“Are you angry with me?”” he asked.

The question broke something inside me.

“No.””

“Because I ruined your wedding?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Because I told people about you?””

I knelt down.

“Noah…”

He looked at me.

“I’m angry because I missed seven years.””

His eyes filled.

I continued.

“I’m angry because I should have been there.””

Lena looked away, crying.

Noah whispered,

“Why weren’t you?””

That question had haunted me for years.

But now I had no choice except to answer.

“I was scared.””

He looked confused.

“Of me?””

My throat tightened.

“No.””

“Then what?””

I looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Victoria.

At everyone who had controlled my life.

“Of people who wanted to use you.””

Noah stared.

“Did they?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

Then he asked the question I didn’t expect.

“Did you?””

I froze.

The entire room disappeared.

Because that was the question I deserved.

Did I use him?

Did I hide behind excuses?

Did I let other people make choices because it was easier than fighting?

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, Noah.””

He looked at me.

“But I failed you.””

A tear rolled down his cheek.

And then he did something I didn’t expect.

He reached for my hand.

A small hand.

A hand that should have held mine years ago.

“I missed you.””

I closed my eyes.

For seven years, I had convinced myself I lost a family.

But the truth was worse.

I had abandoned one.

A sudden crash came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A security guard ran into the ballroom.

“Mr. Cole!””

“What happened?””

“The police are here.””

Nobody spoke.

The guard looked nervous.

“They received a report.””

Victoria immediately looked at Daniel.

“What did you do?””

Daniel smiled.

“What I was supposed to do.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the doors.

“They’re not here for me.””

The doors opened.

Several officers entered.

The guests gasped.

One officer walked forward.

“Ethan Cole?””

I stepped forward.

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“You are being placed under arrest.””

The room exploded.

“What?””

“On what charge?””

The officer pulled out a document.

“Financial fraud, evidence tampering, and the disappearance of Lena Ward seven years ago.””

My blood turned cold.

“That’s impossible.””

The officer continued.

“We have a warrant.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was smiling.

Victoria looked calm again.

Because this was what they wanted.

They didn’t just want the inheritance.

They wanted me destroyed.

“Wait,” Gabriella said.

She stepped forward.

“He didn’t do this.””

The officer looked at her.

“Miss Hart, please step back.””

Lena moved beside me.

“No. He’s being framed.””

The officer looked at the documents.

“We have evidence.””

My heart pounded.

“What evidence?””

The officer hesitated.

Then handed me a file.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Security footage.

My signature.

My name.

My face.

Everything pointed to me.

But one detail caught my attention.

A date.

A date seven years ago.

The night Lena disappeared.

I looked closer.

Then my hands went cold.

Because the signature on the document wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Daniel’s.

It wasn’t Victoria’s.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone who had been silent the entire night.

Someone standing only a few feet away.

I slowly turned.

And looked at Margaret.

Her face lost all color.

Because she knew.

She knew whose signature it was.

And she knew why.

“Margaret…”

She closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

The room went silent.

“Whose signature is that?”” I asked.

She opened her eyes.

And whispered the name that changed everything.

“Your father’s.””

I stared.

“My father is dead.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“But he wasn’t the one who signed it.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who was?””

Margaret looked toward the wedding doors.

And the person standing there.

A person nobody noticed enter.

A person who had been watching everything.

A person who knew every secret before it happened.

“My father’s real heir.””

The stranger stepped into the light.

And I recognized him.

Because I had seen his face before.

In my childhood photographs.

May you like

Standing beside my father.

The brother I never knew existed.
