Chapter 10: The Granddaughter Who Signed My Death

"That's impossible," Michael said.

Dr. Whitmore remained on the phone.

"I understand this is difficult to believe, but I saw Sophie with David. She was carrying a folder containing Eleanor's personal information.""

Michael took the phone from my hand.

"Dr. Whitmore, did my daughter know what those documents were?""

"I can't answer that.""

"Was she involved in declaring Eleanor dead?""

There was a pause.

"She was present when the documents were delivered. She also signed a statement confirming that she knew Mrs. Hayes had supposedly passed away.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"No.""

Camille moved toward him.

"Michael, what if Sophie was being pressured?""

He shook his head.

"She's sixteen. She wouldn't understand the consequences.""

I took the phone back.

"Samuel, I need you to tell me exactly what happened.""

Dr. Whitmore sighed.

"David came to my office three months ago. He said you had been diagnosed with a serious illness and had died while receiving treatment. He brought what appeared to be hospital records and a death certificate.""

"But you never treated me for anything.""

"I know that now.""

"Then why did you sign it?""

His voice became weak.

"Because David told me you had specifically requested that I complete the paperwork. He said the family was handling the arrangements privately.""

I gripped the desk.

"Samuel, I've known you for thirty years.""

"I know, Eleanor. I made a terrible mistake.""

"Was the certificate registered?""

"Yes.""

I felt dizzy.

"Then someone has officially declared me dead?""

"Apparently.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Dr. Whitmore, this is Daniel Foster, legal counsel. I need you to preserve every document, email, and communication related to this matter.

Do not contact David. Do not alter anything.""

"I understand.""

Daniel continued.

"Did David offer you anything?""

The doctor hesitated.

Then he answered.

"He said he would help settle my daughter's medical bills.""

Michael's expression hardened.

"How much?""

"I don't know exactly. He said the money would come through a charitable foundation.""

Jeffrey looked at Daniel.

"Another company.""

The doctor continued.

"There's something else. Sophie seemed frightened. After David left, she came back into my office.""

My heart tightened.

"What did she say?""

"She asked whether signing the statement meant her father would finally be allowed to meet her.""

Michael covered his mouth.

"She thought it was about me?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Michael.

The girl had been manipulated into helping someone declare her grandmother dead, perhaps believing she was opening a door to the father she had never known.

"Samuel," I said softly, "did Sophie know David was using my identity?""

"I don't believe she did.""

Daniel arranged for Dr. Whitmore to provide a formal statement.

Then we ended the call.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Finally, Michael picked up his phone.

"I'm calling Sophie.""

She answered on the fourth ring.

"Dad?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Sweetheart, I need you to tell me the truth.""

"About what?""

"Did you sign documents saying Eleanor was dead?""

Silence.

Then Sophie began crying.

"I didn't know what they were.""

Michael sat down.

"Tell me what happened.""

Sophie explained that David had contacted her several weeks earlier.

He told her that Michael was her biological father and that he wanted to meet her.

But he said there was a complication.

According to David, Michael couldn't establish legal contact with her until a family matter had been settled.

He claimed Eleanor had been interfering with the arrangements.

"He said Grandma Eleanor was sick," Sophie whispered.

"He said she had died, but her paperwork wasn't finished.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"What did you believe?"" Michael asked.

"I believed him.""

"Why?""

"Because he said he was helping you find me.""

Michael pressed his hand against his forehead.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

Sophie continued.

"He said I needed to sign a statement confirming I had been told about her death. He said it was just a formality.""

"Did he explain the money?""

"No.""

"Did he ask you to sign anything else?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

Michael straightened.

"What else?""

"A document about Noah and Caleb.""

I leaned toward the phone.

"What did it say?""

Sophie took a shaky breath.

"It said I was willing to become the temporary administrator of a family account if something happened to Eleanor.""

Daniel immediately looked at Jeffrey.

"That's significant.""

Sophie continued.

"David said it was because I was the oldest granddaughter. He told me he wanted to make sure all the children were protected.""

Michael's voice broke.

"Sophie, listen to me. You are not in trouble for asking questions or telling us what happened.""

"But I signed it.""

"We'll deal with that.""

"Mom said I should never talk about those papers.""

"Where is Vanessa now?""

"She's at the house. David left earlier. He told her he would come back tonight.""

Michael looked at me.

Then Sophie said something else.

"Dad, I found a flash drive.""

"Where?""

"In Mom's bedroom. It was inside a jewelry box.""

"What's on it?""

"I don't know. But David told Mom to destroy it.""

Jeffrey stood immediately.

"Don't touch it. Don't open it. Just keep it somewhere safe.""

Sophie whispered, "I think it has something to do with Noah's birth.""

Camille looked at Michael.

"What kind of something?""

Sophie answered.

"There's a recording. I heard David's voice.""

We arranged to meet Sophie at a lawyer's office that afternoon.

She arrived with a small backpack and red eyes.

Michael stood when she entered.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Sophie walked toward him.

"Are you really my dad?""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

She threw her arms around him.

He held her tightly, crying without trying to hide it.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I wasn't there.""

Sophie shook her head.

"You didn't know.""

He kissed the top of her head.

"I wish I had.""

I watched them from the doorway.

For the first time, I understood how many relationships David had destroyed to protect his secrets.

Sophie eventually handed the flash drive to Daniel.

He placed it inside an evidence envelope.

"We'll have it examined properly.""

She sat beside Michael.

"Is Grandma Eleanor angry with me?""

I moved closer.

"No, sweetheart.""

"But I helped them say you were dead.""

I took her hand.

"You were told something that wasn't true. The people who knew the truth were responsible for telling you.""

Her eyes filled.

"Will Noah hate me?""

I glanced toward the boys.

Noah had been standing near the window.

He looked at Sophie for a moment.

Then he approached.

"Why would I hate you?""

"Because I signed those papers.""

Noah shook his head.

"Did you know what they meant?""

"No.""

"Then we have the same problem. People keep using us to do things we don't understand.""

Sophie began crying again.

Caleb came forward and offered her a tissue.

It was a small gesture.

But I thought it might be the beginning of something good.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression changed.

"What happened?"" Jeffrey asked.

Daniel covered the microphone.

"The medical examiner's office has confirmed that Eleanor's death certificate was submitted using an actual hospital record.""

My blood ran cold.

"How?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Someone used the identity of a deceased woman with the same date of birth.""

He paused.

"And the hospital record contains a signature from a person who had access to Eleanor's medical file.""

I looked toward Sophie.

She was staring at her shoes.

Daniel continued.

"We need to know who had access to that file.""

Before I could answer, Sophie slowly raised her head.

"Grandma?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

She swallowed.

"I know where David got it.""

"Where?""

May you like

She looked directly at me.

"From your house.""
