Chapter 7: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
Michael took the phone from my hand.
He stared at Sophie's photograph for several seconds, then slowly lowered himself onto the sofa.
"That's my daughter," he whispered.
Camille looked at him.
"Michael, what are you saying?""
He didn't answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the teenage girl standing beside Vanessa.
"Her name is Sophie Bennett. She's sixteen.""
I looked at him.
"How can you be certain?""
"Because I have a photograph of her as a baby. Vanessa sent it to me years ago.""
David suddenly stepped forward.
"That's enough. This conversation is over.""
Michael looked up.
"No, David. It isn't.""
"You're confusing everyone.""
"I'm trying to understand why my daughter is standing beside your mistress in a photograph sent to my family.""
David's face tightened.
"Vanessa has nothing to do with this.""
Jeffrey let out a bitter laugh.
"That's funny. She's been at the center of everything.""
I looked at the boys.
Noah stood beside the staircase, his face drained of color. Caleb was holding his brother's sleeve.
I knew that expression.
It was the look of a child who had heard too many adult conversations and was beginning to understand that the people responsible for protecting him had been keeping secrets instead.
I walked over to them.
"Why don't you two go upstairs for a moment?""
Noah shook his head.
"No. I want to hear everything.""
"Sweetheart, this is complicated.""
"Everything is complicated when adults don't want to tell the truth.""
I had no response.
He was right.
Michael stood and approached Noah carefully.
"I need to tell you something.""
Noah folded his arms.
"Another secret?""
Michael nodded.
"Yes. And I'm sorry.""
"Go ahead.""
Michael took a breath.
"When I was younger, I was involved with Vanessa. Before she married anyone. We had a daughter together.""
Noah glanced at the photograph.
"That girl?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you say she was your daughter?""
"Because she is.""
Noah's expression hardened.
"Then why didn't you raise her?""
Michael looked down.
"Because I didn't know she existed until much later.""
Vanessa had told him she was leaving town after discovering she was pregnant. She said she wanted no involvement with him and had already made arrangements to raise the baby herself.
Michael believed her.
He sent letters.
He tried calling.
Eventually, his messages stopped receiving responses.
Years passed.
He assumed Vanessa had moved on.
Then David entered the picture.
"Wait," Camille interrupted.
"Are you saying David knew about Sophie?""
Michael nodded.
"He knew Vanessa had a daughter. But he told me the father was someone else.""
David laughed.
"Because you were never around.""
Michael turned toward him.
"Did you tell Sophie I was dead?""
David didn't answer.
That silence was more disturbing than any confession.
Michael took out his phone.
"I received a message from Sophie three months ago. She found my contact information through an old business associate.""
He opened the conversation.
There were several unanswered questions.
Are you Michael Bennett?
I think you're my biological father.
Please tell me if you know anything about my mother.
Michael had replied immediately.
He had asked for proof.
She sent a photograph of her birth certificate.
The father's name was listed as unknown.
Then she sent a second message.
My mother says you knew about me but didn't want me.
Michael's hands trembled.
"I've never met her.""
Camille covered her mouth.
"David told Vanessa to keep you away from Sophie.""
Michael turned.
"How do you know?""
"Because I saw messages between them.""
David stepped forward.
"You're making accusations you can't prove.""
Jeffrey opened his folder again.
"Actually, we can.""
He removed a printed email.
It was dated six years earlier.
The sender was David.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The subject line read: *Keep Michael Away.*
I felt sick as Jeffrey read it aloud.
"Do not let him contact Sophie. If he finds out she's his daughter, he'll start asking questions about the money. We cannot afford another complication.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"My daughter.""
David rubbed his forehead.
"It was business.""
"Business?"" Michael shouted.
"You kept me from my own child!""
"I was trying to protect Vanessa.""
"From what?""
David looked away.
Jeffrey answered.
"From losing the lifestyle you were funding.""
I turned toward him.
"Explain.""
Jeffrey placed another document on the table.
"Vanessa's company received regular transfers from David's holding company. Some of the money came from the boys' trusts. Other payments came from the company David managed with me.""
Michael stared at the documents.
"How much?""
"Enough to purchase two properties and maintain Vanessa's household for several years.""
Camille shook her head.
"And Sophie?""
Jeffrey nodded.
"Some of the transfers were categorized as educational expenses.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Sophie appeared to be about sixteen.
Noah was sixteen.
Caleb was fourteen.
For years, while I had been worrying about buying school supplies for my grandchildren, David had been financing another household.
And he had done it using money that belonged to the children he claimed to love.
Noah stepped forward.
"Did you spend our money on her?""
David turned.
"Noah, listen.""
"Did you?""
"I was helping a family.""
"What about ours?""
David's eyes filled.
"I was trying to keep everyone safe.""
Noah laughed without humor.
"You couldn't even keep Mom safe.""
Camille began crying.
I reached for Noah, but he moved away.
Then my phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A young girl's voice came through.
"Is this Eleanor Hayes?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Sophie Bennett.""
I looked at Michael.
He went completely still.
"How did you get my number?""
"My mother gave it to me. She said you were with Dad.""
Michael moved closer.
"Sophie? It's Michael.""
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered, "You really are my father?""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
She began crying.
"I thought you didn't want me.""
Michael pressed a hand against his mouth.
"I didn't know about you. I swear.""
Sophie took a shaky breath.
"Then you need to know something.""
"What is it?""
"My mother is packing. David told her we're leaving tonight.""
David's face changed.
Michael looked directly at him.
"Where is Vanessa going?""
Sophie answered before anyone could speak.
"She says we're moving overseas. But before we leave, she wants me to sign something.""
Michael's voice sharpened.
"What?""
"Some papers about money. She says it's for my future.""
Jeffrey grabbed the phone.
"Sophie, don't sign anything.""
A pause.
May you like
Then the girl whispered something that made all of us freeze.
"David said if I sign it, Noah and Caleb will never find out what happened to their grandfather's money.""
