Chapter 14: The Last Lie

Daniel immediately told Noah not to touch anything else in David's bedroom.

He contacted the police and arranged for the house to be secured.

When we arrived, Noah and Caleb were waiting outside with Jeffrey.

Noah held a small photograph in his hand.

It was a passport-sized picture of himself.

His face.

His date of birth.

But the name beneath it belonged to Michael.

Caleb stood beside him, pale and frightened.

"Why would Dad have this?"" he asked.

Michael took the document carefully.

"Did you find anything else?""

Noah nodded.

"A folder. It has plane tickets.""

Daniel examined the papers.

The tickets were booked for that evening.

Two passengers.

Noah Hayes and Caleb Hayes.

The destination was another country.

But the names on the passports were different.

Noah had been listed as Michael Bennett Junior.

Caleb had been listed as Caleb Cole.

Michael stared at the documents.

"David was planning to take them out of the country.""

Jeffrey looked toward the house.

"Without custody authorization?""

Daniel nodded.

"That appears to be the case.""

I felt sick.

"Why would he do this?""

Daniel looked at the passport documents.

"Possibly to make the boys harder to locate or to establish a new identity for them while the financial investigation continued.""

Noah's face twisted.

"He was going to take us away?""

I put my arms around him.

"I won't let that happen.""

Caleb looked up.

"Was he going to leave Grandma behind?""

I couldn't answer.

Daniel placed the passports inside an evidence bag.

Then he noticed another envelope inside the suitcase.

It was marked:

*FINAL ESTATE ARRANGEMENTS.*

He opened it.

Inside was a will.

My name appeared at the top.

But the signature at the bottom was not mine.

It was a forgery.

According to the document, I had left the entire Hayes estate to David.

The boys were specifically excluded.

Daniel examined the date.

"This was supposedly signed two months ago.""

I shook my head.

"I was never asked to sign anything.""

Jeffrey looked at the witness section.

"There's another problem.""

He pointed to the signatures.

One belonged to Dr. Whitmore.

The other belonged to Vanessa.

Daniel immediately called the doctor.

He answered on the second ring.

"Samuel, I need you to look at a document.""

Daniel read the date and described the will.

The doctor's voice changed.

"I never witnessed a will for Eleanor.""

"Are you certain?""

"Absolutely.""

"Did David ask you to sign anything?""

The doctor hesitated.

"He brought a document to my office several weeks ago. He said it was a medical authorization.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Did you sign it?""

"No.""

The doctor continued.

"He told me Eleanor had already signed and that he needed my signature to verify her identity.""

I felt tears burn my eyes.

"Samuel, why didn't you call me?""

"I thought you had authorized it.""

Daniel ended the call after obtaining the doctor's agreement to provide a formal statement.

Then he looked at Vanessa's signature.

"She may have been involved in preparing this will.""

I looked at the document.

"She told us everything.""

"That doesn't mean she has told us everything.""

An hour later, David arrived.

He walked into the living room and stopped when he saw the police officers.

"What is going on?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mr. Hayes, we need to ask you some questions.""

David looked toward me.

"Mom, what have you done?""

I stared at him.

"What's your plan for the boys?""

He frowned.

"What?""

"The passports. The tickets. The false names.""

His expression changed.

Then he laughed.

"They were emergency travel documents.""

"With identities that don't belong to them?""

"I was trying to protect them from Camille.""

Noah stepped forward.

"Why did you give me another name?""

David looked at him.

"Because I didn't want you involved in the family problems.""

"Then why were you taking us away?""

"Because people are trying to destroy our family!""

Noah shook his head.

"You destroyed it.""

David flinched.

Then he looked toward me.

"Mom, please. You know I love those boys.""

I felt something inside me settle.

For years, I had waited for David to become the man I believed he could be.

I had made excuses for his behavior.

I had defended him when he was absent.

I had explained away his anger.

But I couldn't do it anymore.

"Love isn't a passport with a false name," I said.

"Love isn't stealing from your children. Love isn't making their mother disappear.""

David's eyes filled.

"You don't know everything.""

"Then tell us.""

He looked toward Daniel.

"I want a lawyer.""

Daniel nodded.

"That is your right.""

David sat down.

For a few minutes, he said nothing.

Then he looked at Noah.

"Do you remember when you were little and you used to call me Daddy?""

Noah stared at him.

"Yes.""

"I was there when you took your first steps.""

Noah's expression changed.

"Grandma told me you were working that day.""

David looked away.

"I held you when you were sick.""

"Grandma stayed awake all night.""

"I bought you your first bicycle.""

"Grandma taught me how to ride it.""

David's eyes filled.

"Nothing I did was enough for you?""

Noah shook his head.

"That's not what this is about. You want us to remember the good things so we won't ask about the bad ones.""

Caleb stepped forward.

"Why didn't you just tell us the truth?""

David covered his face.

For the first time, he looked like a frightened child rather than an angry man.

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?"" Caleb asked.

"Of losing everything.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not love.

Not protection.

Fear.

David had spent years protecting his reputation, his money, and his position.

And every time he had to choose between those things and his family, he had chosen himself.

Daniel asked him about the will.

David refused to answer.

He was asked about the false passports.

He said he intended to explain later.

He was asked about the trust transfers.

He requested his lawyer.

Finally, Daniel showed him the hospital recording.

David's face changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"Vanessa provided it.""

He looked toward the ceiling.

"Of course she did.""

Daniel pressed play.

Robert's voice filled the room.

"David, I know what you've done.""

Then David's younger voice answered.

"You don't understand the situation.""

Robert replied:

"I understand perfectly. You've taken money from your children.""

"I was going to repay it.""

"You've lied to your wife, your mother, and your business partner.""

"I made mistakes.""

Robert's voice grew stronger.

"Your mistakes are hurting innocent people.""

There was a pause.

Then David said something that made my heart stop.

"You're going to die before you can tell anyone.""

I grabbed the back of a chair.

Robert answered quietly.

"Is that a threat?""

David laughed.

"No. It's a promise.""

The recording continued with the sound of a chair moving.

Then Robert said:

"Put that medication down.""

A brief struggle followed.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

David stared at the floor.

Daniel immediately requested that the police preserve the recording and investigate the circumstances surrounding Robert's death.

Then David finally spoke.

"I didn't kill him.""

I looked at my son.

"Then why did you say that?""

He shook his head.

"Because I was angry. I didn't mean it.""

"Did you give him the medication?""

David's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

"Did you know it was dangerous?""

He hesitated.

"I thought it would calm him down.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"What exactly did you give him?""

David looked toward me.

And then he whispered:

"I didn't know it would stop his heart.""

My knees weakened.

A police officer moved beside him.

David lowered his head.

"I never wanted him dead.""

I stared at the man I had raised.

"Then why did you let us believe he died naturally?""

He began crying.

"Because I was scared.""

I looked at Noah and Caleb.

They were holding each other's hands.

And I knew that whatever happened next, they would never again have to carry the responsibility of protecting their father from the truth.

Later that evening, David was taken away for questioning.

Before leaving, he turned toward me.

"Mom.""

I didn't move.

He swallowed.

"Will you visit me?""

I looked at his face.

I still saw the little boy who used to fall asleep on my shoulder.

I still remembered his first day of school.

But I also remembered the boys waiting by the window.

The forged signatures.

The stolen inheritance.

The years Camille had lost.

And Robert's final words.

"I don't know what tomorrow will look like, David.""

He nodded.

Then he was gone.

As the door closed, Noah came toward me.

"Grandma?""

I opened my arms.

He hugged me tightly.

Caleb joined us.

And for the first time in ten years, neither boy asked when their mother was coming back.

Because she was already there.

The next morning, Camille received a call from Daniel.

The judge had reviewed the emergency custody evidence.

The false travel documents had been secured.

The boys would remain in their familiar home while the family court completed its assessment.

Camille was granted supervised contact immediately, with a clear path toward rebuilding a relationship with her sons.

She cried when she heard.

Then she asked one question.

"Can I see them today?""

Daniel said yes.

I looked toward Noah and Caleb.

They exchanged a glance.

Noah nodded.

"Tell her we'll be there.""

But before we could leave, Jeffrey arrived with another document.

He looked unusually serious.

"Eleanor, the original trust administrator has contacted me.""

"What happened?""

He placed a letter on the table.

"Robert established one final condition for the boys' inheritance.""

I looked at the document.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Neither child shall receive the full inheritance until they understand why their grandfather created it.

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Jeffrey turned the page.

There was another envelope attached.

May you like

It was addressed to Noah and Caleb.

And inside was a message from their grandfather that would change how they understood the entire family.
