Chapter 12: What Happened the Night Robert Died

Jeffrey sat across from me.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the kitchen table.

The clock above the refrigerator ticked loudly.

Finally, he spoke.

"Your husband called me at 9:40 that night.""

I remembered the evening.

Robert had gone to bed early. He had complained of feeling tired, but he had seemed perfectly normal.

At around eleven, David had called me from the hospital.

He told me Robert had suffered a sudden heart attack.

By the time I arrived, my husband was gone.

"Why did Robert call you?"" I asked.

Jeffrey swallowed.

"He wanted to give me something.""

"What?""

"A recording.""

My heart began pounding.

"What recording?""

"One he had made during a meeting with David.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because I never received it.""

"What?""

Jeffrey looked miserable.

"I went to your house that night. David was already there. He told me Robert had asked him to collect some documents from the study.""

I felt cold.

"And?""

"I saw David carrying a small black case.""

The same kind of recorder Jeffrey had brought to court.

I remembered the device.

The one containing the conversation between Camille and David.

"Did you ask him what was inside?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

"That it was personal family information.""

I stood.

"Jeffrey, why didn't you stop him?""

He looked up.

"Because David told me Robert had given him permission.""

I pressed both hands against the table.

"Everyone believed him.""

Jeffrey nodded.

"I know.""

He opened his briefcase and removed an old notebook.

"I've kept a record of everything I remembered from that night.""

He turned to a page.

There was a handwritten timeline.

9:40 p.m. — Robert calls Jeffrey.

10:05 p.m. — Jeffrey arrives at Hayes residence.

10:20 p.m. — David enters study.

10:45 p.m. — David leaves with black case.

11:18 p.m. — David calls emergency services.

11:52 p.m. — David informs family that Robert has died.

I stared at the final entry.

"Why did you write this?""

"Because something didn't feel right.""

I sat down again.

"Did you believe David had hurt his father?""

Jeffrey hesitated.

"I believed he had something to hide.""

Daniel entered the kitchen.

He had been reviewing the documents in the study.

"Jeffrey, I need you to be very careful about what you're suggesting.""

"I know.""

Daniel sat beside me.

"We have evidence of financial misconduct, forged documents, and possible coercion. Those matters are serious enough. We should not assume criminal responsibility for Robert's death without medical or forensic evidence.""

I nodded.

But I couldn't stop thinking about the missing recorder.

"Can it still be found?"" I asked.

Jeffrey looked at me.

"I don't know.""

Then Michael entered.

He was holding his phone.

"I think we have it.""

Everyone turned.

He showed us a message from Sophie.

Dad, I found another box in Mom's storage room. It has David's old business things inside. There's a black recorder.

Jeffrey stood immediately.

"Ask her not to touch it.""

Michael called her.

She answered almost instantly.

"Dad?""

"Sweetheart, where are you?""

"At home.""

"Is Vanessa there?""

"No. She went out.""

"Can you describe the recorder?""

"It's small. Black. There's a silver button on the side.""

Jeffrey closed his eyes.

"That's the one.""

Michael continued.

"Don't play it. Don't move it. We'll arrange to collect it safely.""

Sophie hesitated.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"I found a photograph underneath it.""

"Of what?""

"Grandma Eleanor's husband.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Sophie sent the photograph.

It showed Robert sitting in a hospital room.

David stood beside the bed.

But Robert's expression was strange.

He wasn't smiling.

He looked frightened.

On the back was a handwritten note.

If anything happens to me, ask David why he changed the medication.

My breath caught.

Daniel took the phone.

"Where was this photograph taken?""

Sophie read the hospital name.

It was the same hospital where Robert had died.

Daniel immediately contacted the authorities and requested preservation of the relevant medical records.

He also instructed us not to discuss the photograph with David.

I felt as though the past ten years were collapsing around me.

My husband might have known his own son was dangerous.

He might have tried to protect the boys.

And someone had taken the evidence from his study.

The next morning, Daniel accompanied me to the hospital.

I hadn't been there since Robert's funeral.

The smell of disinfectant brought everything back.

The white corridors.

The waiting room.

The nurse who had held my hand and told me there was nothing more they could do.

We met with the hospital's records administrator.

She reviewed the original file.

Then she called another employee.

"There's an issue," she said.

Daniel leaned forward.

"What issue?""

"The medication record from Mr. Hayes's final admission appears to have been amended.""

My stomach dropped.

"Amended how?""

"The original entry lists one dosage. The later electronic record lists a different dosage.""

Daniel asked whether the original paper chart was available.

The administrator shook her head.

"It was transferred to archived storage years ago. We need authorization to retrieve it.""

"Who made the amendment?""

She checked the system.

Then she looked up.

"According to the audit trail, the change was entered under a physician's account.""

I felt cold.

"Which physician?""

She turned the screen.

The name appeared.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

I grabbed the edge of the chair.

"Samuel?""

Daniel immediately asked for a copy of the audit trail.

The administrator agreed to preserve the record.

Then she added:

"There's another unusual entry. Someone requested access to this file three months ago.""

"Who?""

She looked at the screen.

"David Hayes.""

I closed my eyes.

Daniel stood.

"Please make sure no one accesses or alters this record without proper authorization.""

We left the hospital with more questions than answers.

Outside, I called Dr. Whitmore.

He answered after several rings.

"Hello, Eleanor.""

"Why did you change Robert's medication record?""

There was a long silence.

Then he said:

"I was hoping you wouldn't ask me that.""

My stomach turned.

"Did David tell you to?""

He exhaled.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"He said Robert's medication had been entered incorrectly and needed to be corrected.""

"Was it?""

"No.""

I stopped walking.

"What?""

"The original dosage was correct.""

I could barely speak.

"Then why did you change it?""

"Because David told me there was a legal issue involving the estate. He said the insurance company would refuse payment unless the record was corrected.""

"Did you know Robert had died?""

"Of course.""

"Did you know David had been at the hospital that night?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Samuel, did David give Robert the wrong medication?""

He didn't answer.

Then his voice broke.

"I don't know what he gave him.""

"What do you mean?""

"I wasn't there when Robert took the medication. David said he had followed the doctor's instructions.""

My hands began shaking.

"Are you telling me David administered it himself?""

"Yes.""

The world seemed to tilt.

I heard Daniel speaking beside me, asking me to remain calm.

Then Dr. Whitmore said something that made my heart stop.

"Eleanor, there's something I never told the police.""

"What?""

"David came to my office the morning after Robert died.""

I swallowed.

"What did he want?""

"He asked me to destroy the original prescription.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Where is it?""

"I kept it.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Where?""

The doctor gave us an address.

Then he whispered:

"But Eleanor, you need to understand something. Robert wasn't the only person David had been giving medication to.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who else?""

There was a pause.

Then he answered.

"Camille.""

I turned toward Michael.

Camille stood several feet away.

She had heard enough to understand.

Her face went white.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

Dr. Whitmore continued.

"During the months before she disappeared, David brought Camille to my office several times. He said she was suffering from anxiety and needed treatment.""

Camille shook her head.

"He told me they were vitamins.""

I felt sick.

"What did you give her?""

"I prescribed a mild sedative, but I later discovered David had collected additional medication under a different name.""

Daniel took the phone.

"Doctor, we need the complete records immediately.""

The line went quiet.

Then Dr. Whitmore spoke one final time.

"I think David was trying to make Camille look mentally unstable so he could take the children.""

Camille covered her mouth.

And suddenly, the woman I had blamed for abandoning my grandsons might have been fighting something far more terrifying than a controlling husband.

She might have been drugged into silence.

But before we could process that revelation, Daniel's phone rang.

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

"Eleanor, the police have located Vanessa's car.""

"Where?""

"Near the airport.""

"And Vanessa?""

Daniel hesitated.

"She's been taken to the hospital.""

My heart pounded.

"Is she alive?""

"Yes.""

He lowered his voice.

"But she has made a statement accusing David of poisoning Robert.""

May you like

Then he added:

"She says she has the original recording from the night your husband died.""
