Chapter 8: The Girl With the Missing Documents

Michael immediately put the phone on speaker.

"Sophie, listen to me. Don't sign anything.""

Her breathing was uneven.

"Mom says it's just paperwork.""

"What kind of paperwork?"" Michael asked.

"I don't know. There's a lawyer coming tomorrow morning.""

Jeffrey moved closer.

"Did you see the documents?""

"Yes. There's a company name on them. Hayes Family Holdings.""

I looked at David.

He had gone completely still.

Jeffrey asked, "Is there another name?""

Sophie hesitated.

"Something about a beneficiary. I think it says Eleanor Hayes.""

My stomach dropped.

"Me?""

Sophie continued.

"There's also a page with Noah and Caleb's names.""

I sat down.

"Why would my name be on those papers?""

Nobody answered.

David suddenly reached for the phone.

"Give me that.""

Michael stepped between him and Jeffrey.

"Don't touch it.""

David's voice rose.

"Sophie, hang up. Now.""

The girl went quiet.

Then she whispered, "Is that David?""

Michael answered.

"Yes.""

"He's here, isn't he?""

"Yes, sweetheart.""

Sophie began crying.

"Please don't let him come here.""

Michael's expression changed.

"Has he hurt you?""

"No. But he gets angry when Mom talks about the old accounts.""

David turned away.

Jeffrey moved toward the front door.

"I'm calling the authorities.""

David blocked him.

"You're not calling anyone.""

"Move.""

"Jeffrey, I swear—"

"Move, David!""

The two men stood face-to-face.

I had never seen Jeffrey look so angry.

He was usually the calmest person in any room. But now his hands were shaking.

"You told me the money was gone because of bad investments," Jeffrey said.

"You told me you would repay it. You told me the boys were protected.""

David looked exhausted.

"I was going to repay everything.""

"When?""

"When the company recovered.""

"The company recovered four years ago!""

David said nothing.

Jeffrey continued.

"You didn't repay a cent. You kept transferring money to Vanessa. You used Sophie as another excuse to hide transactions.""

Michael turned toward him.

"What exactly was Sophie signing?""

Jeffrey opened the documents again.

"Possibly a beneficiary acknowledgment. If she signed, it could make certain transfers appear to be legitimate gifts rather than unauthorized withdrawals.""

I stared at him.

"Would that make her responsible?""

"Potentially, depending on what the documents say and how they're used.""

David shook his head.

"That's ridiculous.""

Jeffrey pointed at him.

"You prepared those documents.""

"I had a lawyer prepare them.""

"Under whose instructions?""

David didn't answer.

The room fell silent.

Then Camille spoke.

"Why did you need Noah's paternity hidden?""

David turned toward her.

"Because I was protecting my family.""

"No. You were protecting your reputation.""

She stepped closer.

"You knew Noah was Michael's son. You knew Sophie was Michael's daughter. You knew the children were connected. And you kept all of us separated.""

David's jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

Camille picked up the paternity report.

"Then explain this.""

She held it in front of him.

"You knew Noah wasn't biologically yours before we married. You promised you would love him anyway. But the moment Vanessa had your daughter, you started treating my son like an inconvenience.""

David's expression turned cold.

"Don't rewrite history.""

"Then tell the truth.""

He looked at Noah.

For a moment, I thought he might finally speak honestly.

Instead, he said, "I raised you. I paid for your school. I put a roof over your head. Whatever happened between your mother and me has nothing to do with you.""

Noah stared at him.

"Grandma paid for my school trips. Grandma made my lunch. Grandma sat outside my bedroom when I was sick.""

David looked wounded.

"I worked.""

"And you disappeared.""

Caleb stepped forward.

"You promised you'd come to my baseball games.""

David's face tightened.

"I had responsibilities.""

"So did Grandma.""

That sentence seemed to silence him.

I looked at my grandsons.

They were no longer little boys waiting by the window.

They were young men beginning to recognize the difference between someone who made promises and someone who kept them.

An hour later, Jeffrey's attorney arrived.

His name was Daniel Foster.

He reviewed the documents, listened to the recordings, and examined the financial statements.

Then he turned toward me.

"Eleanor, I need to ask you something. Did you ever knowingly authorize David to move money from the children's trusts?""

"No.""

"Did you sign any transfer documents?""

"Never.""

He nodded.

"Then you may have been a victim of financial fraud as well.""

David stood.

"This is getting out of hand.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Mr. Hayes, I strongly recommend you stop speaking until you have your own legal representation.""

David laughed.

"You're advising my mother against me?""

"I'm advising everyone to preserve the evidence.""

He placed the documents inside a folder.

"We need the original trust agreements, bank statements, and transfer records. We also need to know whether any assets remain.""

Jeffrey nodded.

"I have most of the company records.""

Michael looked toward his phone.

"And we need to get Sophie somewhere safe.""

Daniel agreed.

"Absolutely. No one should pressure her to sign anything.""

David suddenly grabbed his car keys.

"Fine. I'm leaving.""

Noah stepped toward him.

"Where are you going?""

"To handle this.""

"Are you going to Vanessa?""

David didn't answer.

Noah's eyes filled.

"You're still choosing her.""

David stopped.

For a moment, his expression softened.

"Noah, I never stopped loving you.""

Noah shook his head.

"Then why did you make me feel like I wasn't wanted?""

David opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

He left without another word.

Later that night, Michael received a message from Sophie.

It contained a photograph of the documents spread across a dining table.

Jeffrey enlarged the image.

At the bottom of the final page was a signature.

Vanessa Cole.

And beside it, another signature.

David Hayes.

But the most disturbing part was a handwritten note in the margin.

Transfer completed. Original beneficiary removed.

Daniel leaned closer.

"That's significant.""

I looked at him.

"What does it mean?""

He pointed toward the account number.

"This appears to be connected to the original Hayes family trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"Can we recover the money?""

"Possibly. But we need to identify the current account holder.""

Jeffrey typed the account number into his laptop.

He searched through the records he had preserved.

After several minutes, his face changed.

"What is it?"" Michael asked.

Jeffrey turned the screen toward us.

The current beneficiary wasn't David.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't even one of the children.

It was me.

Eleanor Hayes.

I stared at my own name.

"That can't be right.""

Daniel examined the record.

"Someone transferred the account into your name.""

"Without my knowledge.""

He nodded.

"And if the documents are fraudulent, that could expose you to serious legal complications.""

I felt dizzy.

David hadn't simply taken money from the boys.

He had moved it through accounts connected to me.

He had used my identity.

My signature.

My reputation.

And now I might be left holding responsibility for something I hadn't done.

Michael took my hand.

"We'll figure this out.""

I looked at the photograph Sophie had sent.

"Where is she now?""

He checked his phone.

"She says she's at home.""

"Then we need to get her out of there.""

Daniel made a call.

But before he could finish speaking, Sophie's number appeared on Michael's screen.

He answered immediately.

"Sophie?""

Her voice was barely audible.

"Dad, I'm sorry.""

Michael stood.

"What's wrong?""

"I found something in Mom's desk.""

"What?""

"A letter from David.""

Michael looked at Jeffrey.

"What does it say?""

Sophie swallowed.

"It says that if the trust investigation starts, they should blame Grandma Eleanor.""

I felt the room spin.

May you like

Then Sophie added:

"And Dad... there's another letter. It says David knew about the money long before he married Camille.""
