Chapter 4: The Man Behind Noah's Name

"His name is Michael Bennett.""

Camille's words followed me all the way to the car.

I stopped beside the driver's door.

"Michael Bennett?""

She nodded.

I knew that name.

Everyone in David's business circle knew it. Michael had been David's closest friend before Jeffrey became his business partner. They had attended college together, started their first company together, and spent years behaving more like brothers than friends.

But Michael had disappeared from our lives shortly before Noah was born.

David had told me they had a disagreement over money.

I had never questioned it.

"Michael was your husband's best friend?"" I asked.

Camille lowered her eyes.

"Yes.""

"And you're telling me he is Noah's father?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the car door.

"Did David know?""

"He knew before we got married.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did he marry you?""

Camille gave a small, broken laugh.

"Because he wanted to.""

"That doesn't make sense.""

"David wanted the Hayes family name. He wanted your husband's inheritance. He wanted the business connections. And he wanted a wife who would make him look respectable.""

She paused.

"Michael wanted me to tell David the truth. But David already knew.""

My mind struggled to put the pieces together.

"How could he know?""

"Because I told him.""

Camille explained that she and Michael had been together briefly before she met David. It had been a relationship built on friendship, affection, and the kind of trust young people rarely understand until they lose it.

Then Michael left for a business opportunity overseas.

By the time he returned, Camille was dating David.

She discovered she was pregnant shortly afterward.

She had told David there was a possibility Noah wasn't his biological child.

David insisted he didn't care.

He wanted to marry her.

He wanted to raise Noah.

He even promised that the child would never know there had been another man.

"Then what changed?"" I asked.

Camille looked at the paternity report.

"Vanessa happened. David realized he could have a different family without the complications of my past.""

"And Noah?""

"He became a reminder of something David couldn't control.""

My throat tightened.

"Why did you leave without taking the boys?""

She looked toward the window.

"Because David told me that if I tried to take them, he would destroy me.""

I remembered the recording.

They are your sons too.

And that is why you will never see them again.

"What did he threaten to do?""

"He said he would accuse me of kidnapping. He said he had documents proving I was mentally unstable. He told me he would make sure I never saw the children again.""

"But you could have fought him.""

"I had no money, Eleanor. He had lawyers, business connections, and control over every account we shared.""

She swallowed.

"And he had something else.""

"What?""

"He told me he could make Michael disappear from Noah's life forever.""

I felt cold.

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang again.

This time, it was Jeffrey.

"Eleanor, where are you?""

"On my way to David's house. He's packing the boys' things.""

"Don't go there alone.""

"Why?""

There was a pause.

"Because David called me ten minutes ago. He knows you have the paternity report.""

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"How does he know?""

"Someone has been following Camille.""

I looked at her.

She had gone pale.

Jeffrey continued.

"Listen carefully. Don't let David take those boys out of the state. He has already booked two plane tickets.""

"Where is he taking them?""

"I don't know. But I found something in the old company records. Something about a trust account opened in Noah's name.""

"What does that have to do with this?""

"Everything. Call me when you get there.""

The line went dead.

I drove faster.

When I reached David's house, the front door was open.

A suitcase lay on the porch.

I rushed inside.

David stood in the living room, folding shirts into a large travel bag.

Noah was beside the staircase.

Caleb sat on the bottom step, clutching his dinosaur-shaped keychain.

"What are you doing?"" I demanded.

David barely looked up.

"Taking my children somewhere safe.""

"Without telling anyone?""

"You're making this worse, Mom.""

I moved toward Noah.

"Come here, sweetheart.""

He ran to me.

David dropped a shirt.

"Don't encourage this.""

"You're not taking them anywhere tonight.""

He laughed.

"You don't get to decide that.""

Caleb stood.

"Dad said we're going to a hotel near the airport.""

I turned toward him.

"Did he tell you why?""

Caleb shook his head.

"He said Grandma was making trouble.""

David closed the suitcase.

"That's enough.""

Noah stepped between us.

"You said Mom was dead.""

The room went silent.

I turned slowly.

"What?""

Noah's eyes were wet.

"Years ago, when I asked why she didn't call, Dad said she was dead to us. He said we shouldn't talk about her.""

David's expression hardened.

"I never said she was dead.""

"You did!"" Noah shouted.

"You said she was dead to us because she chose another family!""

Camille entered the house behind me.

"David.""

He spun around.

"You stay away from my children.""

"They're my children too.""

"You lost that right.""

"I never lost it. You stole it.""

David stepped toward her.

I moved between them.

"Enough.""

For the first time in my life, I was physically standing between my son and the consequences of his own actions.

David looked at me.

"Mom, you need to understand. Camille is dangerous.""

I shook my head.

"No. I need you to explain why you're trying to take the boys away tonight.""

His face changed.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"Because if Noah finds out who his real father is, everything I've built will collapse.""

Noah stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

David said nothing.

And just then, someone knocked on the open front door.

A man stood outside.

Older than David, with silver beginning to show at his temples.

He looked directly at Noah.

Then he spoke.

May you like

"Hello, son.""

It was Michael Bennett.
