Chapter 13: Vanessa's Last Confession

I had spent ten years believing Camille had destroyed my family.

Now I was beginning to understand that the woman I had blamed might have been one of its victims.

And the woman David had protected for years was finally ready to tell the truth.

Daniel drove Michael and me to the hospital.

Jeffrey stayed behind with the boys, while Camille accompanied Sophie to a separate room where a social worker could speak with her privately.

Nobody wanted the children exposed to another confrontation.

I was grateful.

They had already heard enough.

When we arrived, Vanessa was in a private hospital room. Her face was pale, and an IV line ran into her arm.

She looked smaller than the woman in the photographs.

The expensive clothes were gone.

So was the confidence.

She turned toward the door when we entered.

Her eyes landed on me.

"Eleanor.""

I stopped beside the bed.

"Why did you do it?""

She looked down.

"I know what you're going to ask.""

"Then answer me.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I didn't know David would take things this far.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That seems to be everyone's excuse.""

Daniel pulled a chair beside the bed.

"Ms. Cole, we need you to explain your involvement in the financial transfers, the forged death certificate, and the documents signed by Sophie.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I'll tell you everything.""

"Start with Robert.""

Her expression changed.

For several seconds, she stared at the ceiling.

Then she spoke.

"David told me his father was going to destroy him.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"Because Robert had discovered the missing money. He knew David had been moving funds from the company and the children's trusts. He threatened to report him.""

"Did David hurt his father?""

Vanessa began crying.

"I don't know what happened in that hospital room. But I know David went there with medication.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What medication?""

"Something he said would help Robert sleep.""

I gripped the edge of the chair.

"Did you see him give it to Robert?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. But I heard them arguing before David left.""

"What about?""

"Robert told him he would never allow him to touch the boys' inheritance again.""

Her voice cracked.

"David said something about how nobody would ever believe a son could hurt his own father.""

I felt as though the floor had disappeared.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because David told me Robert had died naturally. He said the doctor had confirmed it. He also told me that if I spoke about the money, I would lose Sophie.""

Daniel made a note.

"Did David ever admit what he had done?""

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"Not directly.""

She reached for a glass of water.

"But the night Camille disappeared, he came to my apartment.""

I turned toward her.

"What happened?""

"He was furious. He said Camille had discovered the financial records and had threatened to expose him.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"He told me he had to make sure she could never return.""

"Did he hurt her?""

"No. But he told me he had given her medication that would make her appear confused if anyone questioned her.""

My hands went cold.

Camille had spent years believing she had been forced to abandon her children.

She had been frightened, isolated, and possibly drugged.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know she was being medicated?""

"Yes.""

"Then you helped him.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I did.""

Her tears fell freely.

"I told myself I was protecting Sophie. I told myself David would eventually leave his marriage and everything would settle down. But he kept asking me to sign things.

He kept moving money. He kept threatening people.""

"Why did you stay?""

She looked at me.

"Because I had become dependent on him.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't explain what you did to my family.""

"No," she whispered.

"It doesn't.""

Daniel opened his folder.

"Tell us about the death certificate.""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"David wanted Eleanor declared dead because he believed the original trust could not be accessed while she remained its representative.""

I stared at her.

"But I wasn't the representative.""

"That's what he wanted everyone to believe.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"He was attempting to establish a false chain of authority.""

Vanessa continued.

"He said if Eleanor was legally dead, the account would need a new administrator. He planned to use Sophie's signature to support the transfer.""

I felt sick.

"He used a sixteen-year-old girl to steal money from her own family.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I know.""

Daniel asked, "Why did you finally decide to cooperate?""

She looked toward the door.

"Because David told me Sophie would be sent away if she kept asking questions.""

Michael's expression hardened.

"Where?""

"To a boarding school overseas. He said it would be easier to manage her if she wasn't around.""

Michael stood.

"She's my daughter.""

"I know.""

"And you let him use her.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"I thought I was keeping her safe.""

Michael turned away.

I understood his anger.

But I also saw the fear in Vanessa's face.

She had spent years choosing the person who controlled her life over the people who needed her protection.

Now she was finally facing what those choices had cost.

Daniel asked about the recording.

Vanessa reached toward her bedside cabinet.

"I have a copy.""

She removed a small memory card.

"David thought he destroyed the original. But I made a backup.""

Daniel placed it in an evidence envelope.

"What's on it?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"Robert's final conversation with David.""

My knees weakened.

"Is it the recording Jeffrey mentioned?""

She nodded.

"It was made in the hospital room. Robert had his phone recording because he suspected David was planning to take the trust money.""

Daniel arranged for the recording to be examined.

Before we left, I turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you ever think about what would happen to Noah and Caleb?""

She lowered her head.

"Every day.""

"Then why didn't you help Camille?""

"I was afraid.""

I looked at her.

"Camille was afraid too. But she lost ten years with her children. I lost ten years believing the wrong person. And those boys lost the chance to grow up knowing their mother.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I know.""

I walked toward the door.

Then she called after me.

"Eleanor.""

I turned.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"David didn't just plan to take the boys' money.""

She looked frightened.

"He planned to take control of the entire Hayes estate after your death.""

I stared at her.

"But I'm not dead.""

"No. That's why he's desperate.""

She swallowed.

"He has another document. A new will. It names him as the sole beneficiary.""

Daniel immediately turned back.

"Where is that document?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"At his house.""

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"And according to that will, Noah and Caleb are not entitled to anything.""

We returned to the parking lot.

Michael was silent.

Daniel was already making calls.

I stood beside the car, looking toward the hospital windows.

For ten years, I had been afraid of losing my grandsons.

I had never imagined I would have to protect them from their own father.

Then my phone rang.

It was Noah.

"Grandma?""

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"Where are you?""

"At the hospital.""

He hesitated.

"Caleb and I need to tell you something.""

"What happened?""

His voice cracked.

"We found Dad's suitcase.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where?""

"In his bedroom.""

"What's inside?""

A pause.

Then Noah whispered:

"Grandma, there's a passport with my picture on it. But it has a different name.""

I closed my eyes.

"What name?""

May you like

He read it aloud.

"Michael Bennett Junior.""
