Chapter 11: My Brother's Second Family
I read the birth certificate three times.
Daniel Reynolds.
The same man who had stood beside me at my wedding.
The same man who had helped carry Claire's coffin.
The same man who had promised to protect my children.
Now his name appeared on the birth certificate of a child connected to Vanessa's family.
I looked at Olivia.
“Tell me this is a mistake.””
She didn't answer.
Rebecca examined the document.
“It could be an acknowledgment of paternity, but we need to verify its authenticity.””
I turned toward the school counselor's office.
Daniel had arrived twenty minutes earlier.
He was standing beside Maya, talking quietly to her.
When he noticed my expression, his smile disappeared.
“Marcus?””
I held up the birth certificate.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at the document.
His face drained of color.
“Where did you get that?””
“Claire's old house.””
He glanced at Olivia.
Then back at me.
“I can explain.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course you can.””
Daniel looked toward the children.
“Not here.””
I stepped closer.
“You've had enough opportunities to tell me the truth.””
“Marcus, please.””
“Is Samuel your son?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer came quietly.
But it hit me harder than anything else that day.
I stepped backward.
“How long?””
“Six years.””
I stared at him.
“You had a child with Vanessa?””
“No. Not with Vanessa.””
He shook his head.
“Samuel's mother was Emily.””
I frowned.
“Paul's sister?””
Daniel nodded.
He sat down heavily.
“Emily and I met years ago, before Claire became ill. We were friends. Then things became complicated.””
“How complicated?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Emily was pregnant when she died. Samuel was born prematurely. The doctors told us he needed a stable guardian.””
I stared.
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“Because Emily's family didn't want the scandal. They believed Daniel Reynolds, brother of a wealthy businessman, shouldn't be involved in a complicated guardianship arrangement.””
I shook my head.
“That's not an answer.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Vanessa offered to help.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“She became Samuel's guardian?””
“Yes.””
“And you allowed it?””
“I thought she would protect him.””
Olivia let out a bitter laugh.
“Vanessa never protected anyone.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You don't understand what happened.””
“Then explain it,” I snapped.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Emily had left money for Samuel. The inheritance was supposed to be managed by a guardian until he turned twenty-one. Vanessa was named as the temporary administrator.””
Rebecca interrupted.
“Was there a legal guardianship order?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not a final one.””
“Then why was Vanessa handling the money?””
“Because the family trusted her.””
I stared at him.
“You trusted her?””
Daniel looked up.
“I trusted Emily's lawyer.””
I paced across the hallway.
“So Claire discovered that Vanessa was using Samuel's inheritance?””
Daniel nodded.
“And she confronted you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“About a year before she died.””
I stopped.
“What did you tell her?””
“That I would handle it.””
“And did you?””
Daniel looked away.
“No.””
I felt something inside me break.
“You knew what Vanessa was doing. You knew she was stealing from a child. And you did nothing?””
“I tried to get Samuel away from her.””
“When?””
“After Emily's parents died.””
I shook my head.
“You could have told me.””
“I was ashamed.””
I stared at my brother.
“Your shame nearly cost my daughter her inheritance.””
He didn't argue.
Rebecca arranged for Samuel to be placed under temporary protective care while the authorities investigated the guardianship.
The boy cried when they explained that he couldn't go home with Vanessa.
Maya took his hand.
“It's okay,” she whispered.
“My dad won't let anyone hurt you.””
I heard her.
And I wondered how a twelve-year-old girl could offer comfort so easily after everything she had been through.
Daniel watched them from across the room.
“I want to take care of Samuel,” he said.
Rebecca shook her head.
“You'll need to establish legal guardianship first. There are financial conflicts that must be investigated.””
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.””
I looked at him.
“Do you?””
He met my eyes.
“Marcus, I made mistakes.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You let Vanessa into my house.””
“Yes.””
“You helped her get close to my children.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I thought she had changed.””
I turned away.
That was the worst part.
He had known enough to be suspicious.
But he had trusted her anyway.
That evening, Olivia came to my room carrying Claire's old notebook.
“There's something I need to show you.””
I took it.
The pages contained dates, account numbers, names, and handwritten notes.
Near the middle was a section titled:
*THE THREE CHILDREN.*
I frowned.
“Three children?””
Olivia nodded.
“Claire believed Vanessa was using three separate inheritance arrangements.””
I turned the page.
The first name was Maya Reynolds.
The second was Samuel Whitmore.
The third was a name I didn't recognize.
*Lily Hale.*
“Who is Lily?””
Olivia looked at me.
“Gregory's daughter.””
I stared.
“Vanessa had a stepdaughter?””
“Yes. Gregory had a daughter from his first marriage. She was fourteen when he died.””
“What happened to her?””
Olivia hesitated.
“She disappeared shortly after her father's death.””
My stomach tightened.
“Another missing child?””
“Claire believed Vanessa had sent her away to a private boarding school. But the school had no record of her.””
I looked at the notebook.
There was a handwritten sentence beneath the name.
If Vanessa cannot control the children, she will control the people who inherit through them.
I read it again.
Then I looked at Olivia.
“Why did Claire never go to the police?””
“She tried. But every time she gathered evidence, something happened. Documents disappeared.
Witnesses changed their statements. People became afraid.””
I closed the notebook.
“What did Claire discover about Lily?””
Olivia turned to the final page.
There was a phone number.
And a short message.
Lily knows what happened to Gregory.
I stared at the handwriting.
“Do you know where she is?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
Then she reached into the notebook's back cover and removed a small photograph.
A teenage girl stood beside a horse.
On the back was an address in a neighboring state.
I took a picture of it with my phone.
Before I could speak, Rebecca called.
“Marcus, we found something.””
“What?””
“The estate's security system recorded Vanessa entering Claire's old house.””
“Did she take the documents?””
“No.””
“Then what did she take?””
Rebecca paused.
“Something much more concerning.””
She sent me a photograph.
It showed an empty drawer.
Beside it was a small envelope with my name written on the front.
The envelope was empty.
I looked at Olivia.
“What's supposed to be inside?””
She stared at the photograph.
Then she whispered:
“Claire's final confession.””
My phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
May you like
*I have what Claire was afraid to tell you. If you want the truth, come to the cemetery tomorrow. Alone.*
The sender's name was Vanessa Reed.
