Chapter 3: The Woman My Wife Warned Me About
Daniel arrived at my house forty minutes later.
He looked like he hadn't slept.
His shirt was wrinkled, his hair was uncombed, and he carried a thick brown envelope under one arm.
I opened the door before he could knock twice.
“Get inside.””
He glanced toward the staircase.
“Are the kids asleep?””
“Yes.””
“Good. They shouldn't hear this.””
I led him into the study.
The black metal box was still open on the desk.
Daniel stopped when he saw it.
“You found it.””
“You knew about this?””
He nodded slowly.
“Claire asked me to keep a copy of certain documents.””
I stared at him.
“You knew Vanessa was involved?””
“I knew something was wrong. I didn't know how bad it was.””
“Then start talking.””
Daniel sat down.
He placed the brown envelope on the desk and removed several photographs.
The first showed Claire standing outside a small office building.
The second showed her sitting at a restaurant with Vanessa.
The third made my stomach turn.
Vanessa was holding a newborn baby.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Before Vanessa met you, she worked for a financial advisory firm. Claire's family used that firm for several investments.””
I studied the photograph.
“When was this taken?””
“Seven years ago.””
“Why was Claire meeting her?””
“Because Vanessa had been managing some of the accounts connected to her parents' estate.””
I frowned.
“That doesn't explain the baby.””
Daniel pushed another photograph toward me.
It showed a younger Vanessa standing beside a man I didn't recognize.
On the back, someone had written a date and a name.
*Ethan Reed.*
“Who's he?””
“Vanessa's younger brother.””
I waited.
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Ethan was involved in a fraud investigation. He had been moving money through several accounts, including one connected to Claire's family.””
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
“Was Vanessa involved?””
“Claire believed she was.””
“Believed?””
Daniel reached into the envelope and pulled out a printed email.
“This is what Claire found.””
I read it.
The message was between Vanessa and Ethan.
It discussed a transfer from an account connected to Claire's parents' business. The amount was $240,000.
One sentence had been highlighted.
Once Claire signs the authorization, nobody will be able to trace the original beneficiary.
I read it again.
Then I looked at Daniel.
“What authorization?””
He tapped the folder on my desk.
“The trust documents.””
My stomach dropped.
“Are you telling me Vanessa planned to take Maya's inheritance before Claire died?””
Daniel nodded.
“Claire discovered the transfers and confronted her.””
I stared at the email.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“She wanted to. But she was afraid Vanessa would disappear before the authorities could investigate. Claire thought she could collect enough evidence to protect Maya's money.””
“And she was sick.””
Daniel looked down.
“She didn't have much time.””
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the garden lights illuminated the empty chairs from the engagement celebration.
The chair Maya had prepared for her mother was still there.
The pink rose had fallen onto the table.
I thought about Claire's final months.
The hospital visits.
The medications.
The nights she held my hand and apologized for leaving me with so much responsibility.
I remembered one particular evening.
She had been sitting beside the bedroom window, watching the rain.
“Marcus,” she'd whispered, “promise me something.””
“Anything.””
“If something ever feels wrong about someone around the children, don't ignore it just because you want your life to be happy again.””
I had kissed her forehead.
“I promise.””
At the time, I thought she was simply worried about the future.
Now I wondered whether she had been trying to warn me about Vanessa.
Daniel interrupted my thoughts.
“There's more.””
I turned.
He removed a small USB drive from the envelope.
“Claire gave me this two days before she died.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“An audio recording.””
“Of what?””
“Her conversation with Vanessa.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Play it.””
Daniel connected the drive to my laptop.
A single audio file appeared.
The date was visible beneath it.
March 14.
The day before Claire entered the hospital for the final time.
Daniel pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Claire's voice filled the room.
“Vanessa, I know about the transfers.””
A chair scraped.
Vanessa's voice followed.
“You don't understand what you're looking at.””
“I understand perfectly. You moved money from my parents' company.””
“It was an investment.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I was going to put it back.””
“When?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
“Claire, please. Think about the children.””
Claire's voice became sharper.
“Don't you dare use my children to excuse what you've done.””
I closed my eyes.
I could almost see her standing in that room.
Tired.
Frightened.
But refusing to back down.
Vanessa spoke again.
“You're dying. You need to think about what happens afterward.””
My blood turned cold.
Claire answered quietly.
“I have thought about it. That's why I've made sure Maya will never depend on you.””
A loud thud followed.
Then Vanessa said something that made Daniel freeze.
“You can't leave that money to her. She isn't even—”
The recording abruptly ended.
I stared at the laptop.
“Play that again.””
Daniel replayed the final seconds.
“You can't leave that money to her. She isn't even—”
Static.
Nothing more.
I looked at my brother.
“What was she going to say?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.””
I pressed my hands against the desk.
“She isn't even what?””
Neither of us answered.
Then I remembered Maya's words from the celebration.
She said Mom's name could ruin everything.
I looked at the recording date again.
March 14.
The day before Claire's final hospital admission.
Something else occurred to me.
Claire had never told me exactly how she discovered Vanessa's involvement.
But if the recording was genuine, Vanessa had been arguing with my dying wife about Maya's inheritance.
And there was something about Maya that Vanessa desperately didn't want anyone to question.
I opened the folder again.
This time, I examined every document carefully.
At the bottom of the stack was a sealed medical envelope.
The name on the front was mine.
Inside was a letter from Claire's physician, along with a document from a private laboratory.
I unfolded it.
The first page contained a date.
The second contained two names.
*Claire Reynolds.*
*Maya Reynolds.*
My eyes moved down the page.
A line near the bottom had been underlined in red ink.
Paternity confirmation: 99.99% probability.
I frowned.
Why would Claire need a paternity test for her own daughter?
Then I saw another name.
The alleged biological father.
*Ethan Reed.*
I dropped the paper.
Daniel stood immediately.
“Marcus?””
I couldn't speak.
The room seemed to tilt around me.
Ethan Reed.
Vanessa's brother.
The man whose name appeared in the photographs and financial documents.
The man Vanessa had apparently been protecting for years.
I picked up the report again, my hands trembling.
Then I noticed something else.
The laboratory date was three months before Claire died.
And beneath the report was a handwritten note.
Marcus, if you ever find this, you deserve the truth. But please remember that Maya is innocent.
I stared at the words until they blurred.
My wife had known.
My wife had known there was a secret involving Maya and Ethan Reed.
And she had hidden it from me.
Daniel reached for my shoulder.
“Marcus, whatever that paper says, don't make a decision tonight.””
I pulled away.
“How long have you known?””
“About the financial fraud? A few months. About this?”” He shook his head.
“I swear, I didn't know.””
I looked toward the staircase.
My daughter was asleep upstairs.
The little girl who had carefully written MAMA on a place card.
The little girl Vanessa had tried to silence.
I folded the report and placed it inside my jacket.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID showed Vanessa.
I answered without speaking.
Her voice came through immediately.
“Marcus, listen to me. Whatever Daniel showed you, it's not the whole story.””
I looked at the paternity report.
“Then tell me the whole story.””
She began crying.
“Please. You don't understand what Claire did.””
“What did she do?””
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
Then she said six words that changed everything.
“Ethan is Maya's biological father, Marcus.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
Vanessa continued, her voice barely audible.
“And Claire made me promise never to tell you.””
I stared at the report.
Then I heard a second voice behind Vanessa.
A man's voice.
One I had never heard before.
“Vanessa, hang up. He isn't supposed to know yet.””
The call ended.
Daniel looked at me.
“Who was that?””
I slowly lowered the phone.
Then a message appeared on my screen.
May you like
It was from Maya.
*Dad, there's a man outside my bedroom. He says he's my real father.*
