Chapter 12: The Confession at the Cemetery

I arrived at the cemetery at 8:30 the next morning.

I wasn't alone.

Rebecca had insisted on accompanying me, and two plainclothes officers were positioned near the entrance.

Vanessa had demanded that I come alone.

I had no intention of trusting her.

The cemetery was quiet.

A cold wind moved through the trees, scattering yellow leaves across the paths.

Claire's grave was near the back, beneath an old oak tree.

I saw Vanessa standing beside it.

She wore a black coat and sunglasses.

Her hair was tied back.

She looked nothing like the woman who had once laughed with my children in the kitchen.

“Marcus,” she said.

I stopped several feet away.

“Where's the envelope?””

She glanced at Claire's gravestone.

“Before I give you anything, you need to understand what happened.””

“I've heard enough explanations.””

“You've heard lies.””

I looked at her.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Vanessa removed her sunglasses.

Her eyes were red.

“Claire and I were friends before you met me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She nodded.

“We met through her family's business. She helped me when I was struggling financially.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because our friendship ended badly.””

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Claire discovered I had been moving money through accounts connected to her parents' company.””

I waited.

“She confronted me. I begged her to keep quiet because I had already promised Ethan I would help him.””

“And she refused.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“She said she would report us.””

I looked at the grave.

“And then?””

“Then I told her about Ethan and Maya.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“You threatened my wife?””

“I was trying to make her understand that everything would come out.””

“Everything?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Her affair. The first DNA test. The fact that she had kept secrets from you.””

I stepped forward.

“Claire took a second test. I know I'm Maya's biological father.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“Did you find the original result?””

“Yes.””

She stared at me for several seconds.

Then she laughed softly.

“Marcus, you still don't understand.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What don't I understand?””

Vanessa reached into her coat and removed an envelope.

She held it out.

“This is what Claire wrote before she died.””

I took it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

But before I opened it, Vanessa spoke again.

“Claire didn't just know about the financial fraud. She knew who was behind it.””

“Ethan?””

“No.””

She looked directly at me.

“Your brother.””

I stared.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He helped move the money. He signed the authorization documents. He knew what Ethan was doing.””

I felt anger rising.

“Daniel admitted he knew about the transfers.””

“Knowing isn't the same as participating.””

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Daniel wasn't just helping us. He was being paid.””

I stared at her.

“Prove it.””

She pulled out a second document.

It was a bank transfer confirmation.

The account belonged to Daniel.

The amount was $125,000.

The sender was Reed Family Holdings.

I looked at the date.

It was three weeks before Claire died.

I felt sick.

“Why would he take this money?””

“Because he needed it.””

“For what?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Ask him about the hospital bills.””

I frowned.

“What hospital bills?””

“Daniel's wife was seriously ill. He couldn't afford the treatment. Ethan offered him money in exchange for helping with the trust.””

I looked at the document again.

It might explain the transfers.

But it didn't explain why Daniel had continued lying.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Vanessa looked at Claire's grave.

“Because I don't want to be the only person blamed.””

I shook my head.

“You forged documents. You stole from children. You threatened my daughter.””

“I know.””

“And you want sympathy?””

“No.””

She wiped her cheek.

“I want you to understand why Claire kept the truth from you.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Marcus,

If Vanessa has given you this letter, then she has finally run out of ways to hide what happened.

There is something I have never told you.

When Maya was born, I was afraid she might not survive. The doctors were concerned about a complication, and I was too weak to make decisions.

During that time, Vanessa offered to help me with the financial arrangements for our children.

I trusted her.

That was my mistake.

I turned the page.

I later discovered that Vanessa had changed the beneficiary details on several accounts. I confronted her, but she told me that if I exposed her, she would destroy the family.

She threatened to tell you about my past with Ethan.

She threatened to tell Maya when she was old enough.

And she threatened to reveal something about Daniel that could ruin him.

I stopped reading.

Vanessa watched me.

“Keep going,” she whispered.

The final paragraph was shorter.

Marcus, there is one person I never managed to find.

Lily Hale.

If she contacts you, listen to her. She has the original recording of Gregory's final phone call.

And she knows who pushed him.

My hands began trembling.

I looked up.

“Who pushed Gregory?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Then I noticed something.

She wasn't looking at me.

She was looking beyond my shoulder.

I turned.

A teenage girl stood near the cemetery entrance.

Dark hair.

A leather jacket.

A small scar across her chin.

I recognized her from the photograph in Claire's notebook.

Lily Hale.

She walked toward us.

Vanessa immediately stepped backward.

“No,” she whispered.

Lily stopped beside Claire's grave.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Lily pulled a small recording device from her pocket.

“I've been waiting six years to say this.””

Vanessa looked toward the officers.

“Marcus, don't listen to her.””

Lily pressed a button.

A man's voice emerged from the device.

It was shaky, frightened, and unmistakably desperate.

“If anything happens to me, Vanessa knows why. She told me the money would disappear if I didn't sign the papers.””

Then another voice spoke.

A woman's voice.

Vanessa's.

“You should have signed when I asked.””

A loud crash followed.

Then Gregory screamed.

The recording ended.

I stared at Vanessa.

She backed away.

“You don't understand. That recording is incomplete.””

Lily stepped forward.

“I was there that night.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“You were a child!””

“I was fourteen. I remember everything.””

Lily looked at me.

“Your fiancée didn't just steal my father's money. She killed him.””

The officers moved in.

Vanessa suddenly turned and ran.

One officer caught her near the cemetery gate.

She fought, screaming that everyone was lying.

But Lily remained beside Claire's grave.

She looked down at the stone.

Then she whispered:

“I promised your wife I'd tell the truth.””

I approached her.

“Why did Claire know you?””

Lily looked at me.

“Because she was the only adult who believed me.””

She handed me another envelope.

“This is the original recording. And there's something else you need to know.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Gregory standing beside Daniel.

They were shaking hands.

On the back, Gregory had written:

*The man Vanessa is protecting is not Ethan.*

I looked at Lily.

“Who is it?””

She pointed toward the cemetery entrance.

A black car had stopped outside.

The passenger door opened.

A man stepped out.

He looked older than in the photographs, but I recognized him immediately.

Paul Whitmore.

The man Vanessa had claimed was missing.

The man whose money had disappeared.

The man whose company now controlled Claire's estate.

He looked straight at me.

Then he said:

“Marcus, there's a reason Vanessa wanted to marry you.””

May you like

He paused.

“Because I'm not the only person who was supposed to die.””
