Chapter 9: The Signature on the Deathbed Document

I placed the photograph on the kitchen table.

“Explain.””

Olivia didn't sit down.

She remained standing near the doorway, her fingers gripping the strap of her handbag.

“I didn't forge anything,” she said.

“Then why is your sister's signature on a document dated three days after her death?””

Olivia looked at Rebecca.

The lawyer picked up the photograph.

“This document appears to transfer the beneficial interest in the Vermont estate. If authentic, it would have serious consequences.””

Olivia shook her head.

“It's not authentic.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you help them?””

“I didn't.””

“Your signature is on the witness line.””

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Olivia finally sat down.

“Claire asked me to sign a document before she died. It wasn't this one.””

“What was it?””

“A protective agreement.””

I frowned.

“Protective from whom?””

“Vanessa.””

Olivia took a deep breath.

“Claire knew Vanessa was trying to gain control of the estate. She asked me to help create a legal barrier that would prevent anyone from transferring Maya's inheritance without independent court approval.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Do you have a copy?””

Olivia nodded.

She removed a folded document from her bag.

Rebecca examined it.

After a few seconds, she looked up.

“This is a legitimate protective agreement. But the document in the photograph has been altered.””

I stared at the two papers.

The signatures were nearly identical.

Nearly.

But Claire's signature on the transfer document had a strange curve at the end.

I remembered the black metal box.

The old letters.

The documents Claire had signed during our marriage.

“Can you prove it's forged?”” I asked.

Rebecca nodded.

“With the original documents, a handwriting expert should be able to establish whether the signature was copied.””

I looked at Olivia.

“Who had access to the original agreement?””

“Vanessa.””

“Why?””

“Because she was present when Claire signed it.””

I stood.

“Then she knew exactly how to copy it.””

Olivia nodded.

“But there's something else.””

I closed my eyes.

I was beginning to dread those words.

“What?””

“Claire never wanted the Vermont estate to go directly to Maya.””

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

“The estate was supposed to remain in a protected family trust. Maya would benefit from it, but she wouldn't control it until she was older.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She confirmed it.

“That matches the original documents.””

Olivia continued.

“Claire was afraid someone would manipulate Maya when she was young. She wanted to make sure nobody could use the inheritance to control her.””

I thought about Vanessa's behavior.

The way she had tried to remove the place card.

The way she had become furious when Maya mentioned her mother's name.

She hadn't been afraid of grief.

She had been afraid of the truth.

Later that afternoon, Rebecca received a call from the bank.

She listened for several minutes.

Then she put the phone on speaker.

“Can you repeat that?”” she asked.

A woman's voice answered.

“We located the original transfer request. It was submitted electronically using an authorization associated with Ms. Reed.””

Rebecca glanced at me.

“Was the transfer completed?””

“No. It was flagged because the beneficiary information didn't match the original trust agreement.””

I exhaled.

“So the money is still protected?””

“Most of it, yes. However, there are several withdrawals that require further review.””

“How much?””

“Approximately $310,000.””

I gripped the table.

Three hundred and ten thousand dollars.

My daughter's future.

The bank representative continued.

“We also found a second account connected to the estate. The account holder is listed as Gregory Hale.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Vanessa's dead husband?””

“Yes,” she said quietly.

The representative explained that the account had received deposits over several years, including funds that originated from Claire's family business.

I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

“Who currently controls the account?””

There was a pause.

Then the answer came.

“An individual named Paul Whitmore.””

Olivia stood abruptly.

“That's impossible.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Paul disappeared nine years ago.””

Rebecca frowned.

“Could he still be alive?””

Olivia shook her head.

“We searched for him for years. There was no trace.””

The bank representative added something.

“The account was accessed last week.””

My heart began pounding.

“By whom?””

“We can't disclose the identity without the appropriate legal authorization.””

Rebecca immediately requested the records.

When the call ended, she looked at Olivia.

“Who is Paul Whitmore?””

Olivia sat down slowly.

“He was Vanessa's first husband.””

I stared.

“Earlier you said she had three husbands.””

“She did. Paul was the first. Gregory was the second. Ethan helped her with the financial arrangements after Gregory died.””

“And the third?””

Olivia's face tightened.

“You.””

The room went silent.

I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.

“I'm not married to her.””

“Not yet.””

I looked at the engagement ring lying on the counter.

Rebecca closed her folder.

“We need to assume Vanessa has been planning this for a long time.””

I thought about the wedding invitations.

The venue.

The guest list.

The celebration.

She had been preparing to become part of my family while secretly trying to take control of the money Claire had left for our children.

But there was one thing I still didn't understand.

“Why did Claire trust Vanessa enough to make her a trustee in the first place?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Because Vanessa wasn't always like this.””

“People don't suddenly become professional thieves.””

“No,” Olivia said.

“But sometimes they become desperate.””

She reached into her handbag again.

This time, she removed a small photograph.

It showed Vanessa holding a baby.

A newborn.

The same photograph Maya had seen earlier.

But this time, Olivia turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

*Vanessa Reed with baby Samuel. September 2017.*

I looked at her.

“Who is Samuel?””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“Vanessa's son.””

I stared at the photograph.

“I thought she didn't have children.””

“She had a son with Paul.””

“Where is he?””

Olivia hesitated.

“He died.””

“How?””

She lowered her voice.

“Vanessa told everyone he died shortly after birth. But the hospital records show something different.””

“What?””

“Samuel was transferred to another hospital. The adoption paperwork was signed under a different name.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Are you saying her son was adopted?””

Olivia nodded.

“Claire found out that Samuel was still alive.””

I looked at the photograph again.

A tiny baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

“Why would Vanessa hide her own child?””

“Because Paul wanted custody. And because the child was connected to a trust that Vanessa had been trying to access.””

I stared at her.

Another child.

Another inheritance.

Another secret.

Then my phone rang.

It was the school principal.

“Mr. Reynolds, I'm sorry to bother you. But there's something you need to know.””

My heart jumped.

“What happened?””

“Someone came to the school asking to collect Maya's belongings.””

“Who?””

The principal hesitated.

“She said she was Maya's mother.””

I gripped the phone.

“That's impossible.””

The principal continued.

“She had identification and a document authorizing her to collect your daughter.””

“Who was it?””

A long pause followed.

Then she answered.

“Vanessa Reed.””

I looked at Olivia.

Her face had gone completely white.

The principal added one final detail.

“She also brought a little boy with her.””

My throat tightened.

“Who?””

“She said his name was Samuel.””

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to become part of my family.

She hadn't wanted to replace Claire.

May you like

She had wanted to bring someone else into Claire's place.

Someone who might have a claim to everything my wife had left behind.
