Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

I watched the video again.

The woman in the back seat had turned toward Maya. Her face was partially hidden, but I recognized the shape of her jaw, the dark hair falling across her shoulders, and the small scar above her left eyebrow.

It was impossible.

Claire had told me her older sister, Olivia, died twelve years earlier.

There had been a car accident overseas. Claire had received a death certificate, attended a memorial service, and spent months grieving.

I had held my wife through those terrible nights.

Now that supposedly dead woman was sitting beside my daughter.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

“What am I looking at?””

My brother looked away.

“Marcus, there's something you don't know about Olivia.””

I grabbed his shoulders.

“Then tell me!””

Daniel swallowed.

“Olivia didn't die in that accident.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“She survived. She was badly injured, but she survived.””

I released him.

“Claire told me she was dead.””

“I know.””

“She showed me the death certificate!””

Daniel lowered his head.

“It was arranged.””

“By whom?””

He didn't answer.

I already knew.

“Was it you?””

Daniel's silence was enough.

I stepped backward.

“You helped them fake her death?””

“Marcus, listen. Olivia wanted to disappear. She had her reasons.””

“And you let my wife believe her sister was dead?””

“Claire knew eventually.””

I stared at him.

“Eventually?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Olivia contacted Claire about two years ago. They started communicating secretly.””

“Why didn't Claire tell me?””

“Because Olivia was involved in something dangerous.””

I thought about the letter.

The forged documents.

The money.

The secret paternity test.

Every piece seemed connected to another piece I hadn't seen.

“Did Olivia know about Vanessa?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was the person who first discovered the financial transfers.””

I looked at the video again.

Maya was crying.

I couldn't afford to waste another second.

I called the police and gave them the vehicle information. Then I contacted Rebecca, who immediately began coordinating with the authorities.

Daniel tried to approach me.

“Marcus, please. Let me explain.””

I turned on him.

“You're going to tell the police everything you know.””

He nodded.

“And if you've lied about anything involving my children, I will never forgive you.””

The police traced Ethan's vehicle to an abandoned lakeside property outside town.

It belonged to an old company connected to Reed Family Holdings.

Two officers accompanied me.

Daniel stayed behind to give a formal statement.

As we approached the property, I saw the black SUV parked beside a weathered wooden building.

My heart pounded.

The officer raised his hand.

“Stay behind us.””

We moved toward the entrance.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, I heard a child's voice.

“Please let us go.””

Maya.

I ran forward before the officer could stop me.

She was sitting on an old sofa beside Noah.

Both children were unharmed.

Ethan stood near the window.

And beside him was Olivia.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

“Dad!”” Maya cried.

I rushed toward her.

Ethan stepped between us.

“Easy, Marcus.””

“Move.””

“We need to talk.””

“You have my children. There is nothing to discuss.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“Marcus, please. I didn't want them brought here.””

I looked at her.

“You're Olivia?””

She nodded.

“I'm sorry.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“Sorry? My wife spent twelve years believing you were dead.””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“And now you're standing here with my daughter?””

“I came because Ethan promised he had Claire's letter.””

Ethan laughed.

“Don't pretend you came for the letter. You came because you wanted to see the children.””

Olivia turned sharply.

“Shut up, Ethan.””

The officer moved closer.

“Sir, step away from the children.””

Ethan raised his hands.

“I'm not holding anybody against their will.””

Maya ran toward me.

I caught her and held her tightly.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded against my chest.

Then she whispered:

“Dad, she knows Mom.””

I looked at Olivia.

“Tell me everything.””

Olivia wiped her eyes.

“Claire and I were close when we were young. But our relationship fell apart after I discovered what Ethan and Vanessa were doing.””

“What were they doing?””

“Using our family's business to move money through false investment accounts.””

Ethan interrupted.

“She doesn't know what she's talking about.””

Olivia pulled a folded document from her bag.

“Then explain this.””

It was a photograph of an old ledger.

Several transfers were marked in red.

The names of the companies matched the ones in Claire's documents.

Olivia continued.

“Claire discovered the fraud shortly before she married you. She wanted to report everything, but Ethan threatened to expose private information about her.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What information?””

Olivia hesitated.

Then she looked at Maya.

“Not in front of the children.””

One officer escorted Ethan outside.

The other took Olivia's statement.

I led Maya and Noah toward the door.

But before we left, Olivia called my name.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

She held out a small white envelope.

“Claire asked me to give you this if Vanessa ever tried to enter your family.””

My hands trembled.

“What's inside?””

Olivia looked at Maya.

“Something your wife wanted you to know before you married again.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Vanessa standing beside another man.

Not Ethan.

A man wearing a wedding ring.

On the back, Claire had written:

*Vanessa has been married before. Find out what happened to her first husband.*

Olivia's voice broke.

“Marcus, Ethan isn't the only person Vanessa has destroyed.””
