Chapter 2: The Box in My Wife's Name
I didn't sleep that night.
Maya fell asleep beside me around midnight, still clutching Claire's photograph. Noah had gone to bed in his own room, but I checked on him three times.
Each time, I found him awake.
At 2:17 a.m., I finally went downstairs.
The house was silent except for the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
Vanessa's bedroom door was closed.
Her suitcase stood beside the wardrobe. She had been planning to stay with me permanently after our wedding, which was scheduled for six weeks later.
I stared at the suitcase.
Then I looked down at the brass key in my hand.
I knew every locked drawer in the house. I had replaced the locks after Claire died because I wanted to organize her personal belongings and protect the children's keepsakes.
There was only one place I could think of.
The old storage cabinet in the study.
Claire had kept her important documents there.
I opened the cabinet and began checking the drawers.
Birth certificates.
Insurance papers.
Property documents.
Old photographs.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a narrow wooden compartment beneath the bottom shelf.
It had a small brass lock.
My hand went cold.
The key fit perfectly.
Inside was a black metal box wrapped in an old blue scarf.
Claire's scarf.
I recognized the tiny embroidered initials near one corner.
C.R.
My heart began pounding.
I carried the box to my desk and opened it.
The first thing I found was an envelope.
My name was written across the front in Claire's handwriting.
*For Marcus. Only if Vanessa comes back into your life.*
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa.
Not a stranger.
Not some woman Claire had never met.
My wife had written her name.
I pulled out the letter.
The paper was yellowed at the edges, but the handwriting was unmistakable.
Marcus,
If you're reading this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen. I know you loved me, and I know you will always protect our children. But there is something about Vanessa that you need to understand.
Please don't confront her until you've seen the documents inside this box.
I wanted to tell you everything when I was alive. I tried more than once. But I was afraid of what it would do to our family.
Most importantly, never let Vanessa have access to Maya's inheritance.
I read that last sentence twice.
Then three times.
Maya's inheritance?
Claire and I had never discussed a separate inheritance for our daughter.
At least, not one I knew about.
I reached into the box again.
There was a thick folder containing bank statements, legal documents, and several printed emails.
The first document was dated four months before Claire died.
It showed a trust account established in Maya's name.
The amount listed at the bottom made me sit down.
One million two hundred thousand dollars.
I stared at the page.
Claire's parents had owned a small chain of medical supply businesses. After they died, Claire inherited their shares. She had sold most of them and placed the money into a trust for Maya.
But why hadn't she told me?
I kept searching.
A second document contained the trust's conditions.
Maya would gain control of the money when she turned twenty-one.
Until then, the trustee would manage the funds.
The trustee's name was Vanessa Reed.
I felt a chill move down my spine.
My fiancée.
I turned to the next page.
There was a signed document authorizing Vanessa to access the trust under certain circumstances.
But the signature at the bottom looked wrong.
It was supposed to be Claire's.
I knew my wife's handwriting better than my own.
This wasn't hers.
A noise came from behind me.
I turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway wearing a silk robe.
“What are you doing?””
I held up the document.
“Explain this.””
Her eyes immediately went to the folder.
Then to the open metal box.
“You shouldn't have opened that.””
I almost laughed.
“My wife left it for me.””
Vanessa stepped into the room.
“Marcus, listen. Claire was very sick when she prepared those documents. She wasn't thinking clearly.””
“Then why is your name on Maya's trust?””
“I was helping her.””
“Why are you listed as trustee?””
“Because she trusted me.””
I lifted the forged signature page.
“Did she trust you enough to let you sign her name?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Then closed.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Finally, she pulled out a chair.
“Claire asked me to handle certain financial matters.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she didn't want you involved.””
I stared at her.
“My wife's money was involved. My daughter's future was involved. You expect me to believe she deliberately kept me out?””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“You were dealing with grief. You weren't thinking about investments, legal structures, or complicated family finances.””
“So you decided to handle everything?””
“I was trying to protect Maya.””
“From what?””
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
Then she lowered her voice.
“From you.””
The room went silent.
I slowly placed the document on the desk.
“What did you just say?””
“Claire believed you were too emotionally attached to Maya to make objective decisions.””
I felt anger rising in my chest.
“You knew my wife was dying. You knew I was taking care of two children. And you used that moment to get your hands on her daughter's money?””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“I did not steal anything.””
“Then show me the account.””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than any confession could have.
“Where is the money, Vanessa?””
“It's invested.””
“Where?””
“Marcus, you're making a mistake.””
I picked up the bank statements.
The most recent transaction was dated only three weeks earlier.
A transfer of $85,000.
The recipient was a company called Reed Family Holdings.
I looked up.
“What's Reed Family Holdings?””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“My family's investment company.””
“You transferred my daughter's money to your family's company?””
“It was a temporary arrangement.””
“Did Maya authorize it?””
“She is a child!””
“And that's why she needs adults she can trust.””
Vanessa slammed her palm against the desk.
“You have no idea what I've sacrificed for this family!””
I stood.
“Apparently, neither does my daughter.””
She grabbed her purse.
“I'm leaving.””
“Good.””
She stopped at the door.
“You'll regret this.””
I didn't answer.
She looked at me one last time.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Claire wasn't the innocent woman you think she was.””
I took one step toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
For an instant, she looked as though she had said too much.
Then she walked out.
I stood alone with the box.
A minute later, my phone vibrated.
It was a text message from an unknown number.
*Marcus, this is Daniel. Don't let Vanessa leave with anything. There's something Claire told me before she died.*
I called my brother immediately.
He answered on the first ring.
“Marcus?””
“What do you know?””
Daniel was breathing heavily.
“I should have told you earlier.””
“Told me what?””
“Claire didn't just leave money for Maya. She left evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
There was a long pause.
May you like
Then Daniel whispered:
“Vanessa wasn't supposed to be anywhere near your family. Claire knew what she had done before you even met her.””
