Chapter 6: The Letter Claire Never Wanted Me to Read

By noon, Maya was no longer at school.

I had collected both children and brought them to Daniel's house.

My brother lived in a quiet neighborhood with a security system, a fenced backyard, and neighbors who had known him for fifteen years.

It wasn't perfect.

But it was safer than our house.

Maya sat on the living room sofa with Noah beside her.

She hadn't spoken much since the previous night.

I knelt in front of her.

“Sweetheart, I need you to listen carefully.””

She nodded.

“There are some things happening involving adults. None of them are your fault.””

“Is the man coming back?””

“Not if I can help it.””

“Does he really know Mom?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Was he her friend?””

I looked at my daughter.

“He knew her before you were born.””

Maya considered that.

“Did Mom like him?””

I didn't want to lie.

“I don't know exactly what their relationship was. But I know your mother loved you.””

Maya looked down at her hands.

“Then why didn't she tell me about him?””

I had no answer.

Noah suddenly spoke.

“Maybe because he wasn't a good person.””

Maya looked at her brother.

Noah shrugged.

“Mom always said you should judge people by what they do, not what they say.””

I pulled both children into my arms.

For a moment, I wished Claire were there.

Not because I needed someone to explain the documents.

But because I needed someone who knew how to make our children feel safe.

At three o'clock, a lawyer named Rebecca Collins arrived.

She had handled Claire's estate and had been the person who originally prepared the trust documents.

I showed her the financial records.

She examined them carefully.

Then she looked at the signature on the suspicious authorization.

“This is not Claire's signature.””

I leaned forward.

“Can you prove it?””

Rebecca nodded.

“I have several original documents in my office. We can compare them. But if this is a forgery, the trust transactions may be criminal.””

“What about the money?””

She turned to Daniel.

“Has anyone contacted the bank?””

“Not yet.””

Rebecca took out her phone.

“I'll contact the financial institution and request an immediate review. We should also notify the trustee's compliance department.””

I shook my head.

“Vanessa is the trustee.””

Rebecca looked up.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely alarmed.

“Vanessa Reed?””

“You know her?””

Rebecca slowly closed the folder.

“She was removed from a previous financial advisory arrangement involving Claire's family.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“When?””

“About seven years ago.””

“Why?””

Rebecca looked toward the children.

“Can we speak privately?””

I followed her into the kitchen.

She lowered her voice.

“There were concerns about unauthorized transfers. Claire asked us to investigate, but the matter was resolved before formal charges were filed.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“That's something I can't answer.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Rebecca, I need to know whether Maya is in danger.””

The lawyer's expression softened.

“Then you need to understand that this isn't simply an inheritance dispute anymore. Someone has approached a minor, entered your home, and threatened your family. We should treat those actions seriously.””

She placed a card on the counter.

“I'm arranging for an independent forensic accountant. And Marcus, don't meet Ethan alone.””

I nodded.

Then she asked the question that made everything worse.

“Have you found Claire's original letter to Maya?””

“No. Vanessa says Ethan stole it.””

Rebecca went completely still.

“What letter?””

I explained.

She opened her briefcase and removed a thin document envelope.

“I was instructed to give you this if anyone ever attempted to challenge Maya's identity or inheritance.””

My hands went cold.

“Who instructed you?””

“Claire.””

She placed the envelope on the counter.

My name was written on the front.

Underneath it were three words.

*Read this alone.*

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Claire in a hospital bed.

She was holding newborn Maya.

But something was strange.

Claire's wedding ring was missing.

I turned the photograph over.

A date was written on the back.

The day Maya was born.

I began reading.

Marcus,

I don't know whether I'll ever have the courage to tell you everything while I'm alive.

When Maya was born, there was a complication. I lost a dangerous amount of blood, and the doctors were concerned about both of us.

During that time, Ethan appeared at the hospital.

I stopped.

Ethan had been there?

I continued.

He told me he knew about the pregnancy. He claimed he had a right to see the baby. I refused.

What happened afterward was something I regretted for years.

My hands began trembling.

Ethan showed me the first DNA report. I believed him when he said he was Maya's biological father. I was frightened, exhausted, and ashamed of the choices I had made before our marriage.

But I later discovered the report was false.

I looked up at Rebecca.

She was watching me silently.

I continued.

I arranged a second test. The result confirmed that you were Maya's biological father.

A wave of relief passed through me.

But the letter wasn't finished.

There is something else you must know. Ethan didn't come to the hospital because he wanted to be a father.

I turned the page.

He came because Vanessa told him about the inheritance.

I froze.

My parents had established a separate investment arrangement for my future children. The amount was larger than anything Ethan or Vanessa had ever imagined.

They believed that if Ethan could convince me Maya was his child, he could claim a portion of the estate through a legal challenge.

I read the sentence again.

This was never about love.

It was about money.

But then I reached the final paragraph.

Marcus, I have kept one more secret. I didn't tell you because I was afraid it would destroy the family we had built.

The first time I discovered Vanessa had been moving money, she wasn't working alone.

I stopped breathing.

The letter continued.

Someone inside our family was helping her.

I stared at the page.

Rebecca moved closer.

“Marcus?””

I couldn't answer.

The letter named the person.

Not Ethan.

Not Vanessa.

Someone I had trusted for my entire life.

*Daniel.*

I read the name twice.

Then a sound came from the living room.

A glass shattered.

I rushed out.

Daniel was standing beside the coffee table.

Maya and Noah were nowhere to be seen.

The front door stood open.

“Daniel!””

He turned toward me.

His face was pale.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

I looked at the open door.

“Where are my children?””

He didn't answer.

“WHERE ARE THEY?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Ethan called. He said he had something that belonged to Claire. Maya wanted to see it.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“You let my daughter leave with him?””

“I thought I could control the situation.””

I grabbed his shirt.

“You thought?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus, I swear I was trying to protect her.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A video appeared.

Maya was sitting in the passenger seat of a black SUV.

Noah was beside her.

Ethan was driving.

He looked into the camera and smiled.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I could hear Maya crying.

Ethan continued.

“Your wife left me something. Something that belongs to my daughter.””

I clenched my teeth.

“Bring my children home.””

“Of course.””

He glanced toward Maya.

“But first, there's someone she needs to meet.””

The camera shifted.

A woman appeared in the back seat.

Her face was partly hidden by the shadows.

Maya turned toward her.

Then she whispered:

“Mom?””

The video ended.

I stood frozen.

Because the woman in that car wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was a woman whose photograph I had placed beside Claire's at our wedding.

May you like

A woman everyone had told me was dead.

*Claire's older sister.*
