Not because she wanted to.
Because the letters made denial impossible.
She said when the first letter came, Richard was alive.
She showed him.
He refused to believe it.
Then they quietly arranged blood tests.
Those tests showed Ethan could not biologically be Margaret’s.
Richard’s sample, however, was never properly compared because he withdrew from the process.
Why?
Fear.
The Harrington trust.
At the time, Richard’s grandfather was still alive.
The family succession documents required biological descendants of the founder’s line for controlling shares.
If Ethan was not Richard’s son?
His position could collapse.
But even if Ethan was Richard’s biological son switched into Elena’s care and another boy switched into the Harrington home, the legal consequences were chaotic.
Inheritance.
Custody.
Public scandal.
Hospital liability.
Margaret said:
“We thought the boys were already six.”
Ethan stared.
“So?”
“We thought changing everything would destroy both families.”
“No.”
His voice shook.
“You thought truth would inconvenience the Harrington family.”
Margaret cried.
“I loved you.”
Ethan answered:
May you like
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
She had no answer good enough.
