Chapter 10: The Father Claire Never Named
I drove straight to Daniel's house.
The black SUV had disappeared into traffic, but I could still see Vanessa's face in my mind.
She had been holding a photograph.
Claire's handwriting was on the back.
*HE IS NOT THE FATHER. ASK REBECCA.*
By the time I arrived, Daniel was standing in the driveway.
He looked frightened.
"Where's Noah?""
"Inside with Susan. He's watching a movie.""
"Good.""
Daniel held up a small plastic evidence bag.
Inside was the hospital bracelet.
I examined it carefully.
The name Amelia was printed across the front.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
*V. COLE — TEMPORARY TRANSFER.*
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know. But the bracelet was inside a locked metal box behind the workbench. There was also a photograph.""
He handed me another evidence bag.
The photograph showed Claire in a hospital bed.
She looked pale, but she was awake.
Beside her stood Vanessa.
And behind Vanessa was a nurse holding a newborn baby.
I looked at the date.
The same night Claire died.
"Why would Amelia be in the hospital that night?""
Daniel shrugged.
"Maybe she was brought there.""
"She was supposedly adopted years earlier.""
"Then someone has been lying.""
I turned the photograph over.
There was another handwritten message.
If they bring her back, don't let Evelyn take her.
My chest tightened.
"Rebecca needs to explain this.""
I called her.
She answered immediately.
"Marcus?""
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"Come to Daniel's house. Now.""
"What's happened?""
"We found a hospital bracelet with Amelia's name. It has Vanessa's name underneath.""
Rebecca went silent.
Then she whispered:
"Please tell me you didn't find the photograph.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What photograph?""
"The one with Claire and the baby.""
"Yes.""
Rebecca exhaled.
"I'll be there in twenty minutes.""
She arrived in seventeen.
The moment she saw the bracelet, she sat down.
"I was afraid this would happen.""
I placed the photograph in front of her.
"Start talking.""
Rebecca stared at the image.
Then she began.
"Amelia wasn't the only child Claire was trying to find.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"After Claire discovered the adoption records were falsified, she started investigating Evelyn's entire operation. She found evidence that several children had been moved between families using false medical records.""
"Why would they do that?""
"Money. Control. Sometimes the families were told the biological parents had died. Sometimes they were told the children had serious medical conditions and needed to be transferred.""
I looked at the bracelet.
"Was Amelia one of those children?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Claire found her original placement records. But she also discovered that the family raising Amelia had been told she was not legally available for adoption.""
"Then why did they have her?""
"Because Evelyn arranged it privately.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Why was Amelia at the hospital three years ago?""
Rebecca hesitated.
"Because Claire had finally found her.""
I stood.
"What?""
"Claire arranged a meeting. She wanted to see her daughter before she died.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Did they meet?""
"Yes.""
My throat tightened.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
"Claire was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"She was afraid that if Evelyn discovered Amelia was alive and had been reunited with her biological mother, she would take the child away again.""
I stared at Rebecca.
"That still doesn't explain Vanessa's name on the bracelet.""
Rebecca picked up the photograph.
"Vanessa was working with Evelyn. But I think she eventually realized that her mother was planning to move Amelia again.""
"Why?""
"Because Amelia had begun asking questions about her adoption.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"So Vanessa brought her to the hospital?""
Rebecca nodded.
"That's what Claire told me.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Then why did Claire write that I wasn't the father?""
Rebecca's expression changed.
She reached into her handbag and removed an old envelope.
"I think it's time you knew the truth.""
Inside was a letter dated seven years before Claire died.
The first paragraph was addressed to me.
Marcus, if you've found this, it means the past has finally caught up with us.
I looked up.
"What's this?""
"Claire wrote it after she discovered who Amelia's biological father was.""
I unfolded the paper.
The next sentence made my hands tremble.
You were never supposed to know that the man who fathered my first daughter was your closest friend.
I stopped reading.
"Who?""
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Your best friend before you met Claire.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"His name was Thomas.""
I felt the room disappear.
Thomas Bennett.
My best friend from college.
The man who had stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who had held my hand at Claire's funeral.
The man who had helped me raise Noah during the first difficult months after her death.
He had died in a car accident eight years earlier.
Or so I had believed.
I sat down.
"Thomas?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Claire and Thomas had a brief relationship before you met her. She was pregnant when he left.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Did Thomas know?""
"Claire believed he did.""
I looked at the letter.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because Thomas disappeared. Claire thought he wanted nothing to do with the baby. Then Evelyn stepped in and arranged the adoption.""
I read further.
I didn't tell you because I was afraid of losing you. When we met, I was already carrying a secret. You loved me without knowing it, and I couldn't bring myself to destroy the life we were building.
My eyes burned.
The next paragraph was worse.
Thomas contacted me again years later. He wanted to meet Amelia. He said he had made a terrible mistake.
I looked up.
"Thomas was alive?""
Rebecca nodded.
"He wasn't the father of the little girl who was supposedly dead. He was the man who had been searching for her.""
"Then how did he die?""
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
"Claire never believed the accident was real.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"She received a letter from him two weeks before his reported death. He said he had evidence against Evelyn. He wanted to expose the adoption scheme.""
Daniel stood.
"Are you saying Thomas was murdered?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"I don't know. But Claire believed he had been silenced.""
I looked down at the letter.
The final paragraph contained an address.
And a name.
*Thomas Bennett — last known residence: 418 Willow Creek Road.*
I knew that address.
It belonged to a house Thomas had purchased shortly before his supposed death.
I looked at Daniel.
"Can you watch Noah tonight?""
"Of course.""
I turned to Rebecca.
"You're coming with me.""
She nodded.
But before we could leave, Noah appeared in the doorway.
"Dad?""
I knelt.
"Hey, buddy.""
He looked at the photograph.
"Was that Mom's friend?""
I nodded.
"His name was Thomas.""
Noah studied the picture.
"Is he my uncle?""
I hesitated.
"Something like that.""
Then Noah said something that made Rebecca cover her mouth.
"That's the man who called Mom on the night she died.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
Noah nodded.
"I remember his voice. Mom was crying after the phone call. She told me everything was going to be okay.""
I felt a chill move down my spine.
"Did you see him?""
"No. But he said he was coming to get the baby.""
I looked at Rebecca.
May you like
She whispered:
"Marcus, Thomas may never have died.""
