Chapter 13: The Woman Who Died Twice
I looked at the photograph until the edges began to blur.
Claire was sitting upright in a hospital bed.
Her hair was tied back. Her eyes were open. One hand rested on a blanket, and the other held a small stuffed rabbit.
Amelia stood beside her.
The date printed beneath the photograph was November 6.
Two days before Claire's official death.
I looked at the hospital bracelet on Amelia's wrist.
Then at the timestamp.
"She was alive," I whispered.
Thomas nodded.
"At least two days before the death certificate says she died.""
I turned toward Rebecca.
"Did you see Claire after November sixth?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"No. I was told she had been transferred to intensive care. When I arrived, Evelyn said Claire had become unconscious and couldn't receive visitors.""
"Who told you she died?""
"Dr. Hale.""
I stared at the photograph again.
"Then why did nobody tell me about this?""
Rebecca's eyes filled.
"Because you were told Claire had died on November eighth. I was told the same thing.""
Thomas walked toward the desk.
"There was another hospital.""
"What?""
"Look at the background.""
He enlarged the photograph on his laptop.
Behind Claire's bed was a small sign.
It read:
*ST. AGNES PRIVATE RECOVERY CENTER.*
I recognized the name.
It was a facility outside the city, one that specialized in long-term rehabilitation and private medical care.
"Why would Claire be there?""
Thomas opened another folder.
"Because Evelyn had arranged a transfer.""
He showed me a document.
It was dated November sixth.
The receiving facility was St. Agnes.
The authorization had been signed by Dr. Hale.
But the signature was different from his usual handwriting.
I called him.
He answered after several rings.
"Marcus?""
"I found a photograph of Claire at St. Agnes on November sixth.""
There was a long silence.
Then he whispered:
"Where did you get that?""
"Does it mean she was transferred?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"I was told she needed specialized care.""
"Did you see her?""
"No.""
"Did you sign the transfer?""
"No, Marcus. I didn't.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then who did?""
"I don't know. But I can tell you something else. Claire's official death certificate was issued using records from a hospital where she was never admitted.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"The hospital listed on her death certificate never received her body.""
I felt sick.
"Then whose body was it?""
Dr. Hale lowered his voice.
"I don't know.""
Thomas turned toward me.
"Ask him about the private recovery center.""
I repeated the question.
Dr. Hale sighed.
"St. Agnes closed six months after Claire disappeared.""
"Disappeared?""
He went silent.
I heard papers moving.
Then he said, "Marcus, I need you to come to my office. There is something I should have told you three years ago.""
"Tell me now.""
"I received a sealed envelope from Claire's lawyer shortly after her death was reported. It contained instructions to keep certain records confidential until November eighth, three years later.""
I looked at the date.
Today was November eighth.
"What records?""
"Her original admission documents. Her transfer records. And a statement from the nurse who treated her.""
"Who was the nurse?""
He hesitated.
Then answered.
"Vanessa Cole.""
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Thomas.
He was already shaking his head.
"That doesn't make sense," I said.
Dr. Hale continued.
"Vanessa worked at St. Agnes under a temporary medical administration contract. She wasn't a registered nurse, but she had access to the patient coordination system.""
I remembered the photograph.
Vanessa beside Claire's bed.
The silver bracelet.
The little girl.
Everything was connected.
"Doctor, is Claire alive?""
There was a long pause.
"I don't know.""
"How can you not know?""
"Because the woman whose death I was asked to certify was never properly identified.""
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Rebecca began crying.
Thomas sat down.
For three years, I had believed my wife was dead.
I had buried an empty casket without knowing it.
I had told Noah his mother wasn't coming home.
And now I was being told that nobody could prove what had happened to her.
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered immediately.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice whispered:
"Marcus?""
I stopped breathing.
"Who is this?""
"It's me.""
My fingers went numb.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it in my dreams.
I had replayed old recordings just to hear it again.
"Claire?""
There was a shaky breath.
"Yes.""
I couldn't speak.
"Marcus, listen to me. You mustn't go to the warehouse.""
Tears filled my eyes.
"Where are you?""
"I can't tell you.""
"Are you alive?""
"Yes.""
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
"Claire, where have you been? Do you know what you've done to Noah?""
She began crying.
"I know.""
"He thinks you're dead.""
"I know.""
"He's been carrying your bicycle around in his memories. He still sleeps with your rabbit.""
"I know, Marcus.""
"Then why didn't you come home?""
Her voice became almost inaudible.
"Because Evelyn told me that if I returned, Noah would disappear.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where is Amelia?""
"With Vanessa.""
"Is she safe?""
"For now.""
I looked at Thomas.
He was staring at me.
"Claire, tell me what happened.""
She took a breath.
"Evelyn discovered that I had copied the financial records. She knew I was going to expose the adoption operation. She arranged for my medication to be changed, but I found out before it was too late.""
"Then the medical report—"
"Was falsified. Vanessa helped me escape St. Agnes. But Evelyn found out and threatened Noah.""
I looked at Rebecca.
Claire continued.
"I couldn't risk returning. So I stayed away and let them believe I was dead.""
I felt anger and relief fighting inside my chest.
"You let me bury you.""
"I had no choice.""
"You had three years to find a way.""
"I tried.""
"No. You disappeared while your son waited for you.""
Her breathing broke.
"Marcus, I know I failed him.""
I looked toward the window.
"Where are you now?""
"Mercer Street. The old warehouse.""
I froze.
"Vanessa told me to meet her there.""
"Don't go inside.""
"Why?""
"Because Evelyn is waiting.""
I looked at Thomas.
He mouthed the words, Trap.
Claire continued.
"There's something you need to know about the three million dollars. It was never my money. It was evidence. The account contains the original transaction records and the names of everyone involved.""
"Why did you make Vanessa the beneficiary?""
"Because I knew Evelyn would try to control her. I wanted them to fight over something they believed was valuable.""
I swallowed.
"Claire, where are you?""
She was quiet.
Then she whispered:
"I'm closer than you think.""
A car door slammed outside Daniel's house.
Thomas looked through the window.
A black SUV had pulled into the driveway.
The passenger door opened.
A woman stepped out.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Her hair was shorter than I remembered.
But there was no mistaking her.
Claire.
My wife.
Alive.
I dropped the phone.
She stood at the front door.
May you like
And when I opened it, she looked past me toward the stairs.
"Where is my little boy?""
