Chapter 12: The Daughter Who Came Back
I stared at the photograph.
Six months ago.
Vanessa had stood in front of me every morning, made breakfast, complained about the bills, and asked whether Noah had finished his homework.
And all that time, she had been hiding Claire's daughter.
"Where is she now?"" I asked Thomas.
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"Who took the photograph?""
"Someone working for me.""
"Why didn't you contact me?""
Thomas looked ashamed.
"Because I didn't know whether I could trust you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You didn't trust me?""
"Marcus, Evelyn knew everything about your family. She knew where you worked, where Noah went to school, and which accounts you controlled.""
"So you decided to let me believe you were dead?""
"I thought it would keep you safe.""
I stepped closer.
"You watched me bury my best friend.""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
Rebecca interrupted.
"Both of you need to stop. Amelia is still missing.""
She pointed to the photograph.
"Vanessa had her six months ago. That means she knows where she is.""
I looked at Thomas.
"How do we find her?""
He opened another folder.
Inside were copies of phone records, travel receipts, and several photographs of Vanessa entering different buildings.
One address appeared repeatedly.
A private residential property outside the city.
Thomas pointed to it.
"Evelyn owns this place through a company. It's not listed under her name.""
I examined the photographs.
The property had high walls and security cameras.
"Was Amelia there?""
"Possibly.""
Rebecca looked at the date of the latest photograph.
"That's only three weeks ago.""
I felt a surge of anger.
"Then she's there now.""
Thomas shook his head.
"Not necessarily. Evelyn moves people when she thinks someone is getting too close.""
I called Patricia.
She listened carefully as I explained everything.
When I finished, she was silent for several seconds.
"Marcus, do not go to that property yourself.""
"Amelia may be there.""
"I understand. But if you enter without legal authority, you could compromise the evidence and put the child at risk.""
"Then what do we do?""
"I'll contact the appropriate authorities. We need to establish Amelia's identity and secure a welfare check.""
I agreed.
But I couldn't sit still.
While Patricia made calls, Rebecca examined the documents.
Then she found something.
A handwritten list tucked inside a folder.
It contained several dates and names.
One entry was circled.
*November 8 — Family transfer.*
That was today.
My stomach tightened.
"Thomas, what is this?""
He looked at the page.
His expression changed.
"That's the date Evelyn planned to move Amelia.""
"Where?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
I called Patricia again.
"There's a transfer scheduled today.""
"Marcus, listen to me. Don't approach anyone involved. I'm contacting the authorities now.""
I looked at the clock.
It was nearly noon.
We didn't have much time.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A girl's voice came through.
"Is this Marcus Reed?""
My heart stopped.
"Yes.""
"My name is Amelia.""
I gripped the phone.
"Amelia?""
"I think you're my father.""
I closed my eyes.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
"Where are you?""
"I'm at a gas station.""
"Are you alone?""
"Yes.""
"Are you safe?""
There was a pause.
"I don't know.""
I looked at Rebecca.
She covered her mouth.
"Amelia, listen to me. I'm going to help you.""
"Is Mom dead?""
My throat tightened.
"Yes.""
"Claire?""
"Yes.""
The girl began crying.
"I wanted to meet her.""
I closed my eyes.
"I know, sweetheart.""
"Vanessa told me she didn't want me.""
My chest tightened.
"That's not true.""
"She said Claire gave me away because she didn't love me.""
"Amelia, listen. Your mother searched for you. She never stopped loving you.""
The girl sobbed.
"Then why didn't she come?""
I struggled to find words.
"Because people lied to her. They made it impossible for her to find you.""
A car horn sounded in the background.
Amelia whispered:
"She's coming.""
"Who's coming?""
"Vanessa.""
My entire body went cold.
"Amelia, where exactly are you?""
"I don't know. There's a big sign. It says—"
The call suddenly ended.
I called back.
No answer.
I immediately sent the number to Patricia.
She contacted the authorities and began coordinating a search.
Thomas was pacing.
"She shouldn't have called you.""
"Why?""
"Because Evelyn will know.""
My phone rang again.
This time, it was Vanessa.
I answered.
"Where is Amelia?""
She laughed softly.
"Good morning to you too.""
"Where is she?""
"Safe.""
"Then let her go.""
"She's not your responsibility.""
"She's Claire's daughter.""
"She's also a child who has been through enough.""
I felt my hands shaking.
"You have no right to keep her from us.""
Vanessa's voice became cold.
"You don't understand what happens if Amelia tells the truth.""
"What truth?""
"She knows what happened to Claire.""
I stopped breathing.
"She was seven years old.""
"She remembers things.""
"What things?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said:
"She saw your wife take something from the hospital medication cabinet.""
I stared at the phone.
"What?""
"Claire wasn't innocent, Marcus.""
I shook my head.
"You're lying.""
"Ask Amelia. She saw her mother with the medication. She saw her arguing with Dr. Hale.""
I looked at Thomas.
His face had gone pale.
Vanessa continued.
"Your wife was trying to protect herself. She knew the medical records would expose what she had done.""
"What are you talking about?""
"Claire changed her own treatment.""
I felt sick.
"That's impossible.""
"Is it? What if she knew she was going to die? What if she deliberately changed the dosage to make sure nobody could question the money she had stolen?""
"Claire didn't steal anything.""
"Then why did she need a secret account?""
I froze.
A secret account?
Vanessa laughed.
"You didn't know, did you?""
I looked at Rebecca.
She was staring at me.
"Marcus, there's a reason Claire kept that red folder hidden. There's a reason she made you promise to open the metal tube only if I destroyed the bicycle.""
"What does that have to do with anything?""
"Because she knew you would eventually find the money.""
I gripped the phone.
"What money?""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Three million dollars.""
I felt the room go silent.
"Where is it?""
"That's what Evelyn wants.""
"And you?""
"I want to get out of this without going to prison.""
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I asked:
"Did you change Claire's medication?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she said:
"Come to the old warehouse on Mercer Street. Bring the red folder. Come alone.""
"Why?""
"Because I have something you need to see.""
"What?""
"Your wife left a second recording. One that proves she was lying to you about everything.""
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Thomas approached.
"What did she say?""
I explained.
He immediately shook his head.
"It's a trap.""
"I know.""
"Then don't go.""
"Amelia is with her.""
"We'll get the authorities.""
I looked at Rebecca.
"Do you know anything about a secret account?""
She shook her head.
Then her eyes moved toward the metal tube photograph on the table.
"Wait.""
She opened the leather folder and removed a small piece of paper.
It was a bank deposit receipt.
The account holder's name was Claire Reed.
The balance shown on the last recorded statement was exactly three million dollars.
But there was something else.
The account had been opened seven years before Claire died.
And the beneficiary wasn't Marcus Reed.
It wasn't Noah.
It wasn't Amelia.
It was *Vanessa Cole*.
I stared at the paper.
Rebecca whispered:
"Marcus, I think Claire knew Vanessa would eventually become part of your family.""
Then Thomas picked up the deposit receipt and turned it over.
On the back was another message in Claire's handwriting.
The money is not a gift. It is bait.
Below that were six additional words.
And Vanessa is not the real target.
I looked at Rebecca.
"What does that mean?""
She turned the paper over again.
A second name was written beneath the message.
*EVELYN COLE.*
My phone vibrated.
A new message had arrived from Amelia.
It contained only one photograph.
A little girl standing beside Claire in a hospital room.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
*MOM DIDN'T DIE THAT NIGHT. SHE WAS ALREADY GONE WHEN THEY ARRIVED.*
I looked up at Thomas.
His face had turned white.
"Marcus," he whispered, "I think we've been investigating the wrong night.""
Then he pointed to the timestamp on the photograph.
It was dated two days before Claire's official time of death.

And the person holding the camera was listed in the file as:
*VANESSA COLE.*
