Chapter 5: The Mother Behind the Plan
I didn't leave immediately.
I stared at the monitor.
Vanessa's name appeared beside a fresh access timestamp.
Dr. Hale quickly printed the audit report.
"Take this," he said.
"And don't let anyone know you have it.""
"Who is across the hallway?""
"Records administration.""
"Then call security.""
"I already did.""
We stepped into the corridor.
A hospital employee was pushing a cart of files toward the elevators.
A woman in a gray cardigan stood near the records office, speaking into her phone.
She turned when she heard us.
I recognized her from the photograph Claire had left.
Vanessa's mother.
Evelyn Cole.
She was older now, with silver hair and a pearl necklace, but her face was unmistakable.
She looked at Dr. Hale.
Then at me.
"Marcus," she said pleasantly.
"What a surprise.""
I walked toward her.
"What are you doing here?""
"Visiting an old friend.""
"At the medical records department?""
Her smile barely moved.
"Is there something wrong with that?""
"Why did you access my wife's medical file?""
Evelyn glanced at Dr. Hale.
"Richard, I thought we agreed that Claire's records were confidential.""
Dr. Hale looked furious.
"Your daughter accessed them without authorization.""
Evelyn sighed.
"Vanessa has always been impulsive.""
I stepped closer.
"She forged my signature. She changed my wife's medical records. And now she's accessing files she has no right to see.""
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"Be careful, Marcus. You're making serious accusations.""
"I have the documents.""
"Documents can be misleading.""
"Then explain the unauthorized medication changes.""
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she smiled again.
"Perhaps you should consider the possibility that Claire wasn't entirely honest with you.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What does that mean?""
Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
She held it between two fingers.
"Your wife left something with me.""
My heart began pounding.
"What?""
"An agreement.""
She offered the envelope.
I didn't take it.
"What agreement?""
"Claire wanted Vanessa to have access to Noah's trust fund in the event of her death.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"Is it?""
"Claire would never do that.""
Evelyn shrugged.
"People change their minds when they become ill.""
I reached for the envelope.
She pulled it away.
"Not so quickly. I think we should discuss this somewhere private.""
Dr. Hale stepped between us.
"Mrs. Cole, give him the document.""
Evelyn's pleasant expression disappeared.
"You have already caused enough trouble, Richard.""
"Claire was my patient.""
"And you failed her.""
The words landed like a slap.
Dr. Hale flinched.
Evelyn turned to me.
"Your wife was frightened. She was sick. She made decisions she might not have made otherwise. Vanessa was simply trying to help.""
"By burning Noah's bicycle?""
Evelyn blinked.
"What?""
"That bicycle belonged to Claire. Vanessa destroyed it yesterday.""
For the first time, Evelyn seemed genuinely unsettled.
Then she said something that made the entire hallway feel colder.
"She shouldn't have done that.""
I stared at her.
"You knew about the bicycle?""
Evelyn didn't answer.
I took out my phone.
"Tell me why Claire put Vanessa's name on the metal tube.""
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"Because Claire was a manipulative woman who enjoyed creating conflict.""
I stepped forward.
"She was dying.""
"And she still wanted to control everything.""
A security officer appeared at the end of the corridor.
Dr. Hale motioned toward him.
Evelyn placed the envelope back in her handbag.
"This conversation is over.""
"No," I said.
"It isn't.""
She walked toward the elevator.
Just before the doors closed, she looked at me.
"Ask your son about the envelope his mother gave Vanessa. He knows more than you think.""
The elevator doors shut.
I turned to Dr. Hale.
"Why does everyone keep telling me to question my son?""
He looked exhausted.
"Because Claire trusted him with something she couldn't trust anyone else with.""
I returned home that afternoon.
Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen island, drinking coffee.
A shopping bag rested beside her.
She looked up.
"You're back.""
I didn't answer.
"Where's Noah?""
"Safe.""
She rolled her eyes.
"You're seriously keeping him away from me?""
"I'm keeping him away from this.""
I placed the medical report on the counter.
Her eyes moved over the pages.
She didn't touch them.
"Where did you get those?""
"The hospital.""
She took a sip of coffee.
"Then you should know better than to believe everything in a medical file.""
I leaned against the counter.
"Your mother was there.""
The cup stopped halfway to her mouth.
"What?""
"Evelyn. At the hospital. She was accessing Claire's records.""
Vanessa set the cup down.
"Why would my mother do that?""
"That's what I'd like to know.""
She stood.
"You've been talking to her?""
"I spoke to her.""
"And?""
"She said Claire signed an agreement giving you access to Noah's trust.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a brief second, something resembling relief crossed her face.
Then it disappeared.
"Well, there you go.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Claire made arrangements. She knew she was dying.""
"Do you have the agreement?""
Vanessa looked away.
"Not with me.""
"Where is it?""
"I don't know.""
I took a step closer.
"Vanessa, if there's a legal document, I want to see it.""
She laughed bitterly.
"You want to see it? Fine. Ask your wife.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?""
She looked directly at me.
"Ask Claire.""
Then she walked upstairs.
I remained in the kitchen, trying to understand what she meant.
A few minutes later, my phone rang.
Daniel.
"Marcus, you need to come over.""
"What's wrong?""
"Noah told Susan something.""
I grabbed my keys.
"What happened?""
"He's been hiding a photograph. He says Claire told him never to show it to anyone unless Vanessa started asking about her money.""
I drove to Daniel's house.
Noah was sitting at the dining table with Susan.
His face was pale.
When I entered, he immediately stood.
"Dad, I'm sorry.""
I knelt.
"There's nothing to apologize for.""
He opened his small backpack and removed an old photograph.
It showed Claire standing beside Vanessa and Evelyn outside a courthouse.
The date was printed on the back.
Three months before Claire died.
But it was the handwritten message beneath the photograph that caught my attention.
The day I learned what they wanted.
I turned it over.
A second sentence had been written in Claire's handwriting.
Evelyn isn't Vanessa's mother. She's her business partner.
I looked at Noah.
"Where did you find this?""
"In Mom's old book.""
"What book?""
"The one she kept under her bed.""
My phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from an unknown sender.
There was no message.
Only one attachment.
A scanned copy of Claire's original will.
I opened it.
The document named me as Noah's sole guardian and trustee.
But there was a handwritten amendment attached.
It had been signed by Claire.
And it named Vanessa as the alternate guardian.
I stared at the signature.
It looked authentic.
Then I noticed the witness section.
One of the witnesses was Evelyn Cole.
The other was a man whose name I recognized from the hospital report.
Dr. Richard Hale.
I looked at the date.
It was signed two days before Claire died.
May you like
And at the bottom of the email was a final sentence:
Ask Dr. Hale why he signed a document he never witnessed.
