Chapter 3: The Secret Noah Had Kept
I didn't let Vanessa leave the garage.
Not because I wanted to frighten her.
Because I was afraid that if she walked away, I might never get another chance to understand what she had done.
"What did you say about Noah?"" I demanded.
Vanessa adjusted the sleeve of her sweater.
"You're being unreasonable.""
"Answer me.""
"He was there that night.""
"At the hospital?""
She nodded.
"And he heard things.""
I stared at her.
"Noah was seven years old when Claire died. He barely understood what was happening.""
"Children understand more than adults think.""
Daniel stepped outside behind me.
"Vanessa, you should leave.""
She gave him a cold look.
"This is between my husband and me.""
Daniel folded his arms.
"Not anymore.""
Vanessa turned back to me.
"Marcus, I know you're upset about the bicycle. I shouldn't have burned it. Fine. I'll admit that.""
"You burned it after calling my son clutter.""
"I was angry.""
"You held him back while he cried.""
"He was getting too close to the fire!""
"Then why did Mrs. Harris have to put it out?""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
She looked toward the house again.
"Just ask him about the hospital.""
Then she walked away.
I watched her enter through the back door.
Daniel approached me.
"Don't confront her alone again.""
I nodded.
But my mind was somewhere else.
Noah.
What had he heard?
And why had Vanessa waited three years to bring it up?
I found him in the living room.
He was sitting on the carpet, drawing a picture of a bicycle.
He had colored the frame blue.
I sat beside him.
"Hey, buddy.""
He looked up.
"Are you mad?""
"At you? Never.""
"Vanessa said you were going to send her away because I made trouble.""
My stomach twisted.
"She told you that?""
He nodded.
"She said if I hadn't cried about the bicycle, you wouldn't be angry.""
I took the crayon from his hand and placed it on the table.
"Listen to me carefully. You didn't cause any of this. Do you understand?""
He looked down.
"I tried to stop her.""
"I know.""
"I said please.""
"I know, buddy.""
His chin trembled.
"She said Mom was dead and I should stop acting like she was coming back.""
I pulled him into my arms.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question Vanessa had left behind.
"Noah, do you remember the night Mom went to the hospital for the last time?""
His body stiffened.
I immediately regretted asking.
"You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to.""
He stared at the drawing.
"Can I tell you something?""
"Anything.""
He lowered his voice.
"Vanessa was there.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"That night. Before Mom went to the hospital.""
My mouth went dry.
"Are you sure?""
He nodded.
"I saw her in the kitchen.""
"At our old house?""
"Yes.""
I remembered that evening.
Claire had been in terrible pain. I had called the ambulance, then rushed upstairs to get her medication and clothes.
I had never seen Vanessa there.
At least, I didn't think I had.
"What was she doing?""
Noah pressed the blue crayon against the paper.
"She was talking to Mom.""
"Do you remember what they said?""
He nodded slowly.
"Mom told her to leave.""
I felt my heartbeat in my throat.
"And Vanessa?""
"She said Mom couldn't keep everything forever.""
I swallowed.
"What happened next?""
Noah's eyes filled with tears.
"Mom told her that you would find out. Then Vanessa said nobody would believe a sick woman.""
I couldn't move.
Noah continued.
"Then Mom saw me.""
He looked at me.
"She told me to go back to my room and not tell you because she didn't want you to get scared.""
I closed my eyes.
Claire had been protecting me.
Even then.
Even when she was dying.
"Did you tell anyone?""
Noah shook his head.
"I was scared Vanessa would get mad.""
I held him tighter.
"You're not in trouble. You did nothing wrong.""
He hesitated.
"There's something else.""
I pulled back.
"What is it?""
Noah looked toward the staircase.
"Mom gave Vanessa something.""
"What?""
"A little envelope.""
"What was inside?""
"I don't know. But Vanessa put it in her purse.""
He rubbed his eyes.
"Then Mom said, 'If you ever hurt my son, Marcus will find out everything.''"
My entire body went cold.
The envelope.
The tube.
The documents.
Suddenly, pieces of the puzzle began connecting.
I stood and called Daniel.
"Can you come back inside?""
He appeared a moment later.
"What's wrong?""
"Noah remembers Vanessa visiting Claire before she died.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Are you sure?""
I nodded.
"She was there the night Claire went to the hospital.""
Daniel looked at Noah.
"Buddy, did you see anything else?""
Noah shook his head.
Then he stopped.
"Actually...""
We waited.
He stood and walked toward the hallway.
"Mom told me where she put something.""
I followed him.
He climbed the stairs, turned into his bedroom, and knelt beside the wooden toy chest.
He pulled out a stuffed dinosaur with one missing button eye.
I recognized it.
Claire had bought it for him on his third birthday.
Noah opened a small tear along the dinosaur's back.
He reached inside and pulled out a tiny folded paper.
"I found this a long time ago," he said.
"I didn't know what it meant.""
I unfolded it.
There were only seven words.
If Vanessa comes back, check the red folder.
I stared at the message.
"Where is the red folder?""
Noah pointed toward my bedroom.
"Mom's old closet.""
I hadn't opened that closet in months.
Not since Vanessa had insisted that we needed to clear space.
I hurried downstairs and went into the bedroom.
The closet smelled faintly of cedar and the lavender sachets Claire used to hang between her clothes.
Vanessa had removed most of her belongings after we married.
But the old wooden shelf remained.
I checked the boxes.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a narrow space behind the bottom drawer.
I pulled it out.
Something red was wedged against the back panel.
A thin folder.
I opened it.
Inside were photocopies of financial records, medical documents, and a sealed envelope addressed to me.
The handwriting was Claire's.
I tore it open.
Marcus, I wish I could tell you everything face-to-face. But if you're reading this, I may not have had the chance.
I read on.
Vanessa didn't simply steal money from the charity. She used my identity to authorize transactions after I discovered what she was doing.
My hands began trembling.
She also knows about Noah's trust fund. She believes that if she becomes his legal guardian, she can gain control over the money.
I stopped.
Noah's trust fund.
Claire had established it when he was born.
It was supposed to pay for his education and future.
I continued.
There is one more thing. I discovered that someone inside the hospital accessed my medical records without authorization. I don't know whether it was Vanessa or someone working with her.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
At the bottom was a name.
*Dr. Richard Hale.*
I knew that name.
He had been Claire's attending physician.
He had signed her final medical report.
And he had attended our wedding.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Mr. Reed? This is Dr. Hale.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why are you calling me?""
There was a long pause.
Then he said:
"Because I heard about the bicycle.""
I looked toward the doorway.
Vanessa was standing there.
She had entered without making a sound.
The doctor continued.
"Your wife left something with me before she died. Something I should have given you years ago.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"What is it?""
His voice dropped.
"A second medical report. One that was never included in her official file.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was no longer pretending to be calm.
The doctor spoke again.
"Mr. Reed, I need you to understand something. Your wife's death certificate tells only part of the story.""
Vanessa took one step toward me.
"Hang up, Marcus.""
I ignored her.
"Doctor, what are you saying?""
He inhaled shakily.
Then he delivered the words that shattered the last three years of my life.
"Your wife didn't die because her treatment failed. Someone deliberately changed her medication records.""
The call disconnected.
I stood motionless.
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she whispered:
"Marcus, before you believe him, you need to know what Claire was hiding from you.""
I looked down at the red folder.
There was one final document beneath the medical records.
A document I hadn't noticed before.
It was a signed statement.
May you like
And the name at the bottom wasn't Vanessa's.
It was mine.
