Chapter 6: The Will That Should Never Have Existed
I read the email three times.
Then I called Dr. Hale.
He answered on the second ring.
"Marcus?""
"I received a copy of Claire's amended will.""
Silence.
"Who sent it?""
"That's what I want to know. Your name is on the witness section.""
He exhaled slowly.
"Don't believe that document.""
"Did you sign it?""
"No.""
"Then why is your name there?""
"I have no idea.""
I looked at the photograph Noah had given me.
"Dr. Hale, Evelyn Cole was there too.""
Another silence.
Then he said, "You need to bring that document to a lawyer. Immediately.""
"Was Claire trying to change Noah's guardianship?""
"Yes. But not in the way you're thinking.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then explain it.""
"Claire was trying to prevent Vanessa from gaining access to the trust. She had discovered that someone was preparing fraudulent guardianship paperwork.""
"Who?""
"I don't know. But Claire told me she believed Evelyn was involved.""
I looked at the will again.
"Why would Claire name Vanessa as alternate guardian?""
"She didn't.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
"The document Claire showed me had a completely different name.""
"Whose?""
"Her sister. Your sister-in-law, Rebecca.""
I frowned.
"Claire didn't have a sister.""
"She had a half-sister. They were estranged for years.""
I sat down.
"Where is she now?""
"I don't know. Claire asked me not to contact her unless something happened.""
I looked at Noah.
He was watching me from the opposite end of the table.
"Something has happened," I said.
Dr. Hale gave me an address.
Then he said, "One more thing. Don't confront Evelyn again until you've spoken to Rebecca.""
The call ended.
I sat quietly for a moment.
Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.
"What's the plan?""
"Find Claire's sister.""
"Do you know her?""
"No. But apparently she was supposed to protect Noah.""
Daniel glanced at the photograph.
"Then we'd better find her.""
That evening, I hired an attorney named Patricia Miller.
She specialized in estate fraud and guardianship disputes.
When I showed her the documents, she studied them carefully.
"Mr. Reed, this is serious.""
"Can you tell whether the amendment is genuine?""
"Not without examining the original and comparing the signatures. But there are several irregularities.""
She pointed to the witness section.
"Both witnesses are listed as having signed in person. Yet the hospital access logs show Dr. Hale was on duty in another building at the stated time.""
"And the notary?""
Patricia looked at the bottom of the page.
"That's another problem. The notary's commission expired two months before this document was supposedly signed.""
I stared at her.
"So it's fake.""
"Possibly. But we need to establish who created it and why.""
She turned another page.
"There's something else. The amendment transfers control of Noah's educational trust to the alternate guardian.""
I felt sick.
"Vanessa.""
Patricia nodded.
"That would give her substantial authority over the funds.""
"Could she withdraw the money?""
"Not automatically. But she could petition for control, approve certain expenses, and potentially redirect distributions depending on the trust's terms.""
I leaned back.
"Claire knew someone wanted that money.""
Patricia closed the folder.
"Then we need to find out what happened to the original trust documents.""
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I rejected the call.
She called again.
Then a text appeared.
Come home. We need to talk about Noah.
I stared at the screen.
Patricia noticed.
"Do you feel safe returning?""
"I don't know.""
"Then don't go alone.""
Daniel offered to drive me.
When we arrived, Vanessa was waiting in the living room.
She had changed into a black dress and placed two suitcases beside the front door.
I stopped.
"What are those?""
"I'm leaving.""
I looked at her.
"Where?""
"Somewhere I can breathe.""
Daniel remained near the entrance.
Vanessa glanced at him.
"Do we need an audience?""
"He's staying," I replied.
She sighed.
"I've spoken to my mother. She says you've been making accusations.""
"Your mother has a lot to explain.""
"She's not involved.""
"Then why was she accessing Claire's medical records?""
Vanessa looked away.
I placed the fraudulent will on the coffee table.
"Did you create this?""
She stared at it.
For a moment, she seemed genuinely confused.
Then her expression became defensive.
"Where did you get that?""
"Answer the question.""
"I've never seen it.""
"Your name is on it.""
She picked up the document and examined it.
Then she laughed.
"Marcus, this is ridiculous. I don't need a fake will. Claire gave me her blessing.""
"She did?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"Because you were always jealous of how close we became.""
I stared at her.
"Claire hated you.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"She didn't know me.""
"She knew enough.""
Vanessa threw the paper onto the table.
"You have no idea what that woman was like behind closed doors.""
"Then tell me.""
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Claire was obsessed with money. She knew she was dying, and she wanted to control what happened afterward. She didn't trust anyone. Not even you.""
"That's not what the documents say.""
"Documents!""
She pointed toward the folder.
"You're treating pieces of paper like they're more important than the woman you actually lived with.""
I stepped closer.
"Did you change her medication?""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Then she shook her head.
"No.""
"Did your mother?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you forge my signature?""
"No.""
"Did you burn Noah's bicycle because you wanted to destroy something Claire left behind?""
Her silence lasted too long.
Finally, she whispered, "I wanted that thing gone.""
"Why?""
"Because every time I looked at it, I remembered her.""
"She was Noah's mother.""
"And I was your wife!""
The words exploded through the room.
Vanessa began pacing.
"Do you know what it's like to live in a house where every room belongs to another woman? Her photographs. Her furniture.
Her stupid bicycle. Her son looking at me like I'm some stranger who stole his family.""
I watched her.
For the first time, she wasn't pretending to be a caring stepmother.
She was telling me exactly who she was.
"I never asked you to replace Claire," I said.
"But you expected me to live with her ghost.""
"No. I expected you to love her child.""
Vanessa stopped.
Then she said quietly, "I did love him.""
"No, you loved what he could give you.""
She looked at me.
And her expression changed again.
"Your wife promised me something.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"She promised that if anything happened to her, I would never have to worry about money again.""
"Claire didn't owe you anything.""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"She owed my mother.""
"Why?""
Before she could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Daniel moved toward it.
I opened the door.
A woman in her early forties stood outside, holding a leather folder.
Her eyes moved past me.
They landed on Vanessa.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then the visitor looked at me.
"Marcus Reed?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Rebecca.""
I froze.
"Claire's sister?""
She nodded.
Then she held out the folder.
"I've been trying to find you for three years.""
Vanessa stepped backward.
Rebecca looked directly at her.
"Claire told me what you did.""
Vanessa's voice became sharp.
"You have no right to be here.""
Rebecca ignored her.
She opened the folder and removed a photograph.
It showed Vanessa and Evelyn standing beside a hospital bed.
Claire was lying in it.
The date was visible.
The photograph had been taken on the night Claire died.
But there was something else.
A hospital bracelet lay beside Claire's hand.
And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note:
The medication was changed before the doctor arrived.
I looked at Rebecca.
"Who took this picture?""
She swallowed.
"I did.""
"Why didn't you come forward?""
"Because Claire made me promise to wait until I had the original recording.""
"What recording?""
Rebecca reached into the folder and removed a small USB drive.
"Your wife recorded her final conversation with Vanessa.""
I stared at the drive.
"What's on it?""
Rebecca looked toward Vanessa.
Then she answered.
"Your wife knew she might not survive that night. Before she lost consciousness, she asked Vanessa one question.""
"What question?""
Rebecca's voice cracked.
"She asked why Vanessa had used her own name when ordering the medication change.""
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the USB drive.
Daniel caught her arm.
"Don't touch it!""
She struggled.
"Give me that!""
Rebecca stepped away.
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone completely white.
And then she screamed:
"YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT CLAIRE MADE ME DO!""
The room fell silent.
I stared at my wife.
"What did Claire make you do?""
Vanessa stopped struggling.
Her eyes filled with tears.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"She made me choose which one of you would survive.""
