Chapter 11: The Man in the Abandoned House
Willow Creek Road was almost an hour away.
The neighborhood had changed since I last visited.
New houses stood where empty lots used to be. Old trees had been cut down. The corner store where Thomas bought coffee every morning had become a pharmacy.
But the house was still there.
A small brick property with white shutters and a broken mailbox.
Rebecca sat beside me in the car.
"Are you sure this is the place?""
I checked the address again.
"Yes.""
The front garden was overgrown.
A newspaper lay beneath the mailbox.
The windows were covered with curtains.
I approached the front door and knocked.
Nothing.
I knocked again.
"Thomas?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Marcus, what if someone else lives here?""
I tried the handle.
It turned.
The door opened.
The house smelled of dust and old wood.
I stepped inside.
"Hello?""
No answer.
The living room was almost empty.
A chair.
A small table.
A dusty lamp.
But on the wall was a photograph.
Thomas and me standing beside a fishing boat.
We were twenty-five.
Both laughing.
I touched the frame.
"Why would someone leave this here?""
Rebecca walked toward the hallway.
"Marcus.""
She pointed to a door.
It was slightly open.
Inside was a small office.
A desk stood against the far wall.
On it were several folders, an old laptop, and a framed photograph of a little girl.
Amelia.
I picked it up.
On the back was a handwritten message.
For my daughter. One day, you'll know why I couldn't come home.
My throat tightened.
Rebecca opened the first folder.
It contained copies of bank transfers.
The names were familiar.
Evelyn Cole.
Vanessa Cole.
Several charity organizations.
And Thomas Bennett.
"Look at this," Rebecca said.
She showed me a transfer record.
Thomas had sent money to an account belonging to Evelyn.
The payment was dated three weeks before his reported death.
I frowned.
"Why would he pay her?""
Rebecca turned another page.
A note had been attached.
Final payment for Amelia's release.
I felt my stomach drop.
"Thomas was trying to get his daughter back.""
Rebecca nodded.
"And Evelyn was making him pay.""
I opened another folder.
Inside were photographs of Vanessa meeting Thomas.
One showed them outside a hotel.
Another showed Vanessa handing him an envelope.
The last photograph made my blood run cold.
It showed Thomas standing beside a car.
The license plate matched the vehicle involved in his supposed accident.
I looked at the date.
The day before he died.
"Someone was following him.""
Rebecca examined the photograph.
"Marcus, look at the passenger window.""
I moved closer.
There was a reflection.
A woman sitting in the passenger seat.
I recognized her immediately.
Evelyn.
My hands tightened.
"She was with him.""
Rebecca nodded.
"Then perhaps the accident wasn't an accident.""
A noise came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
We both froze.
I reached for my phone.
"Who's there?""
A floorboard creaked.
Then a voice answered.
"You're not supposed to be here.""
I looked toward the staircase.
A man stood at the top.
He was older, thinner, and had a gray beard.
But I recognized his eyes.
I dropped the folder.
"Thomas?""
The man stared at me.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then he slowly descended the stairs.
"Marcus.""
My legs felt weak.
"You're alive.""
He nodded.
"I am.""
I stepped forward.
"Everyone thought you were dead.""
"I know.""
"You let us bury you.""
Thomas looked down.
"I didn't have a choice.""
I grabbed his jacket.
"You were my best friend!""
He didn't resist.
"I know.""
"You stood at my wife's funeral!""
His eyes filled.
"I know.""
I shoved him away.
"Then tell me why!""
Thomas looked at Rebecca.
"Is that Claire's sister?""
"Yes," she answered.
He nodded.
"Then you should both sit down.""
I refused.
"Start talking.""
Thomas rubbed his face.
"Evelyn had control over Amelia's adoption. She told me Claire had given up all parental rights. When I found out the paperwork was false, I tried to get Amelia back.""
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
"Because Evelyn had evidence that could destroy me.""
"What evidence?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Years ago, I helped her move money through the charity. I thought it was legitimate. By the time I discovered what she was doing, my name was already on the documents.""
Rebecca shook her head.
"So you worked with her?""
"At first, yes. I didn't know about the children.""
"And Vanessa?""
Thomas looked down.
"She was the one who introduced me to Evelyn.""
I felt sick.
"Why did you fake your death?""
Thomas walked toward the desk.
He opened a drawer and removed a newspaper clipping.
It showed a car wreck.
The headline read:
*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN KILLED IN HIGHWAY COLLISION.*
"That car belonged to me," he said.
"But I wasn't driving.""
"Who was?""
He looked at me.
"Someone Evelyn wanted gone.""
Rebecca stepped backward.
"Who?""
Thomas took a breath.
"Her husband.""
I stared at him.
"Evelyn's husband?""
"Yes. He had discovered what she was doing. He planned to testify.""
Thomas placed another photograph on the desk.
It showed a man standing beside Evelyn.
On the back was a name.
*Robert Cole.*
"Robert disappeared two weeks before the accident," Thomas explained.
"Evelyn told everyone he had abandoned the family.""
"Was he killed?""
Thomas nodded.
"She arranged for his body to be identified as mine.""
Rebecca covered her mouth.
"That's why you disappeared?""
"I was afraid I would be next.""
I stared at him.
"What about Claire?""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"I tried to warn her. I called her the night she died. I told her I had evidence against Evelyn. I said I was coming to get Amelia.""
"Then what happened?""
"I arrived at the hospital, but Vanessa was already there.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What did she do?""
"She told me Claire was unconscious and that I couldn't see her. She said the baby was being moved.""
"Amelia?""
Thomas nodded.
"She was at the hospital. Evelyn had arranged to take her away again.""
Rebecca stood.
"Where did they take her?""
Thomas looked toward the window.
"I don't know. But I found something after they left.""
He opened the laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside was a video file.
The date matched the night Claire died.
Thomas pressed play.
The camera showed a hospital corridor.
Vanessa appeared, pushing a wheelchair.
A little girl sat in it.
Amelia.
Then Evelyn entered the frame.
She handed Vanessa a small envelope.
Vanessa looked inside.
And immediately began crying.
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
"What was in the envelope?""
Thomas shook his head.
"I never found out.""
Then he opened another file.
A scanned document appeared.
It was a hospital transfer form.
The destination was listed as a private medical facility.
The receiving physician's name was clearly visible.
Dr. Richard Hale.
I looked at Thomas.
"Why would he transfer Amelia?""
Thomas swallowed.
"Because Amelia wasn't the only person being moved that night.""
I leaned forward.
"What do you mean?""
Thomas opened a second video.
This one showed Claire's hospital room.
Vanessa was standing beside the bed.
Claire was unconscious.
Then Vanessa leaned close to her ear and whispered something.
The camera had no sound.
But as Vanessa stepped away, she slipped a small object into her handbag.
Rebecca gasped.
I recognized the object.
It was the silver bracelet Claire had worn every day.
Thomas paused the video.
"Marcus, there's something I need to tell you about that bracelet.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"Claire wasn't wearing it when she died.""
He zoomed in on the image.
The bracelet was gone.
Then he showed me another photograph.
It had been taken outside the hospital.
Vanessa was standing beside a black SUV.
The bracelet was around her wrist.
And beside her stood a little girl.
Amelia.
But the date beneath the photograph was not three years ago.
May you like
It was taken six months ago.
Amelia was still with Vanessa.
