Chapter 10: My Brother Wasn't Alone in That Car

I didn't remember walking back to the security office.

I only remembered Vanessa's words.

Your brother didn't die in that car accident.

For twelve years, I'd carried the memory of Ethan's funeral like a stone in my chest. I'd remembered the closed casket, the rain against the church windows, and my father standing beside me with one hand on my shoulder.

I'd remembered him saying, "Sometimes, Marcus, the truth is kinder than the questions.""

Now I wondered what questions he'd been trying to keep me from asking.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

She stood beside the storage unit door, clutching her handbag.

"Ethan discovered that Paul was moving money out of the family trust. He found documents proving that the money was being used to finance several properties through false identities.""

"And Lily?""

"Paul discovered Ethan had a daughter. He believed she could eventually claim part of the trust.""

"Why would that matter if the trust belonged to Ethan's children?""

"Because Paul had already promised those assets to someone else.""

"Who?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I never knew the full name.""

"You're asking me to believe you spent years investigating this and never discovered who was receiving twenty million dollars?""

"I was trying to protect Lily!""

I stepped closer.

"Then start telling the truth.""

Vanessa looked at Daniel, then lowered her voice.

"The night Ethan died, he called me. He said he was leaving town with Lily. He wanted to take her somewhere Paul couldn't find her.""

"How old was she?""

"Six months.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where was the accident?""

"On Route 17, outside Millbrook.""

I knew the road.

It was a narrow stretch surrounded by woods. Ethan's car had supposedly lost control during a storm.

"What happened to Lily?""

Vanessa looked away.

"She wasn't in the car.""

"Where was she?""

"With me.""

I stared at her.

"You had the baby?""

"Yes. Ethan asked me to keep her safe. I took her to my sister's house.""

"Then why did everyone believe he was alone?""

"Because Paul wanted the investigation closed. He told the police Ethan had been driving alone.""

"And you let him?""

Vanessa began crying.

"I was twenty-four, Marcus. I was frightened. Paul told me if I spoke, he would make sure Lily disappeared.""

I felt anger rising.

"You could have come to me.""

"I didn't trust your father.""

"You married me!""

"I know.""

"After my brother died. You knew who I was. You knew what happened to Ethan. And you never told me you had his daughter.""

She lowered her head.

"I know what I did.""

"No, you don't.""

I turned away.

Daniel interrupted.

"Marcus, we need to move. The police are waiting at your house.""

I looked at him.

"Can we establish whether Ethan's accident was actually investigated?""

"Yes. I'll contact our legal department.""

"Do it now.""

Vanessa stepped toward me.

"Marcus, please. Don't hand me over to the police.""

I looked at her.

"Why shouldn't I?""

"Because I can take you to Lily.""

That stopped me.

I turned slowly.

"Where is she?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"She's twenty-two now. She lives under another name.""

"Where?""

"I'll tell you if you promise not to let Paul get near her.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You've spent years keeping secrets from me, and now you're asking me for promises?""

"She's your niece.""

The word hit me unexpectedly.

My niece.

Somewhere in the world, my brother's daughter had grown up without knowing her family.

I thought of Noah.

I thought of Emily.

I thought of the suitcase beside our front door.

"Tell me where she is.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered and listened.

His expression changed.

"What do you mean the report was withdrawn?""

He looked at me.

"Yes, I understand.""

He ended the call.

"The police report against Noah has been withdrawn.""

"By whom?""

"Paul.""

I frowned.

"Why would he withdraw it?""

Daniel checked the notification.

"He submitted a second statement. Apparently, he claims the original complaint was filed in error.""

I didn't trust it.

Neither did Daniel.

"There's something else," he said.

"Our legal department found the original accident report for Ethan.""

"Show me.""

Daniel opened the document.

The official report stated that Ethan had died at the scene.

But there was a handwritten note attached to the final page.

*SECOND OCCUPANT UNIDENTIFIED. VEHICLE RECOVERED WITH TWO SETS OF PERSONAL EFFECTS.*

I read it twice.

"Two occupants?""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what it says.""

Vanessa went completely still.

I turned toward her.

"Who else was in that car?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I swear, Marcus. Ethan told me he was driving alone.""

I looked back at the document.

The second occupant had never been identified.

There was no name.

No photograph.

No follow-up investigation.

Just a line stating that the body had been identified through dental records.

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Rachel.

Marcus, I've found something in Emily's old papers. You need to come here immediately.

Another message followed.

I think we have been looking for the wrong person.

I called her.

She answered in a whisper.

"Marcus, I found the original hospital record from the night Emily died.""

My chest tightened.

"What does it say?""

"She wasn't admitted under her own name.""

I closed my eyes.

"Rachel, whose name was on the record?""

She took a shaky breath.

Then she said:

"Vanessa Reed.""

I turned toward my wife.

May you like

She had gone white.

And for the first time, I realized that whatever happened twelve years ago might have been connected to something that happened six years later.
