Chapter 4: Eleven Days Until Everything Changed
For nearly a minute, I couldn't speak.
My son was about to inherit something hidden inside a storage facility, and someone had spent years making sure I never discovered it.
I looked at Daniel.
"Explain the transfer.""
Daniel turned his laptop toward me.
"The archive was originally established by your father. When he died, ownership was supposed to pass to you. But the transfer was interrupted by a secondary legal instruction.""
"Which was?""
"Your father named Noah as the final beneficiary.""
"Why didn't I know about this?""
"Because the instruction was sealed. It required two conditions before the documents could be released. Noah had to reach eighteen, and the archive had to remain untouched until that date.""
I looked at the date on the screen.
"Who changed the access permissions?""
"Someone using your administrative credentials.""
"Vanessa?""
"I can't prove that yet.""
I pointed toward Emily's letter.
"She knew.""
Daniel nodded.
"Apparently, she did.""
I leaned against the desk.
My father, Richard Carter, had been a difficult man. He built his business from nothing and trusted almost nobody. After his death, I'd spent months sorting through company documents, legal disputes, and unpaid contracts.
I thought I'd handled everything.
Now I was beginning to understand that someone had been hiding an entire part of his life from me.
"Can we open Unit 408?""
Daniel hesitated.
"We can, but I recommend bringing an independent witness and documenting everything.""
"Then arrange it.""
"Marcus, there's another issue.""
I looked at him.
"What now?""
He opened the access report.
"Someone attempted to change the beneficiary information three days ago.""
My stomach tightened.
"To whom?""
Daniel clicked on the record.
The proposed replacement beneficiary appeared.
*VANESSA REED.*
I stared at the screen.
"She tried to put herself in Noah's place?""
"Yes. The request was rejected because it required your authorization and an independent legal review.""
"Who submitted it?""
"An account connected to the original estate administrator.""
"Name.""
Daniel turned the laptop slightly.
"Paul Whitmore.""
I knew that name.
Paul had been my father's attorney for almost twenty years. He had handled the estate after his death and had attended my wedding to Vanessa.
He'd even given a speech at our reception.
I remembered him raising a champagne glass and telling everyone how fortunate I was to have found someone who could help me rebuild my family.
My hands curled into fists.
"Call our legal department. I want the original estate documents.""
Daniel nodded.
I checked my phone.
There were three missed calls from Vanessa.
Then a message.
We need to talk. You're making a terrible mistake.
Another message appeared.
Do not let Daniel show you anything else.
I showed it to Daniel.
He looked at me.
"She knows we're here.""
I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
"Marcus!""
"How do you know I'm at Eastbrook?""
Silence.
Then she said, "I know you. I knew you'd go there.""
"Why did you try to transfer Noah's inheritance into your name?""
Her breathing changed.
"Who told you that?""
"The records.""
"Those records are incomplete.""
"Then complete them for me.""
"Marcus, please. There are things about your father you don't understand.""
"Then explain them.""
She lowered her voice.
"Your father was not the man you think he was.""
I laughed without humor.
"And you are?""
"Listen to me. That archive is dangerous.""
"What's inside?""
"I can't explain over the phone.""
"Then come here.""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because if I come there, people will know I have the documents.""
I went still.
"What documents?""
She ended the call.
I stared at my phone.
Daniel closed the laptop.
"Marcus, we should secure the facility.""
Before I could answer, a security alarm sounded.
One of the monitors flashed red.
*RESTRICTED CORRIDOR — UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS.*
Daniel rushed toward the screen.
"Someone's inside.""
We watched the camera feed.
A man wearing a dark jacket was standing outside Unit 408.
He had a key.
He inserted it into the lock.
The door opened.
"Who is that?"" I demanded.
Daniel enlarged the image.
The man's face became visible.
My stomach dropped.
It was Paul Whitmore.
My father's attorney.
The man who had tried to transfer Noah's inheritance.
And he was standing inside a storage facility he had no right to enter.
Daniel grabbed his security radio.
"Lock down the building.""
I was already moving toward the door.
"Marcus, wait!""
But I didn't stop.
May you like
Because Paul had just entered the room containing everything my father and Emily had tried to protect.
And I had eleven days before it legally belonged to my son.
