Chapter 14: The Signature That Could Destroy My Son

I spent the next hour reading every document Rachel had kept.

Some were financial statements.

Others were legal agreements.

One was a copy of the document I'd signed twelve years earlier.

At first glance, it looked like a standard corporate authorization.

But the final page contained a clause I had never seen.

*IRREVOCABLE TRANSFER OF BENEFICIAL CONTROL.*

The document stated that I had authorized Paul Whitmore to manage the Carter family archive until Noah reached twenty-five.

Not eighteen.

Twenty-five.

Worse, it gave Paul the right to sell certain assets if the trust became insolvent.

I looked at Rachel.

"How did he get this signed?""

"Your father told you it was a routine estate document.""

I remembered that day.

I'd been exhausted.

My father had died only weeks earlier, and I was trying to keep the company operating.

Paul had arrived at my office with a stack of paperwork.

He'd told me the documents were necessary to prevent a tax dispute.

I'd signed.

Without reading every page.

I felt sick.

"Why didn't Emily tell me?""

"She found out afterward. By then, Paul had already registered the transfer.""

I looked at the date.

Twelve years earlier.

The same year Ethan supposedly died.

The same year Lily was born.

The same year my brother's name began appearing in the trust records.

"Where's the original agreement?""

Rachel pointed toward a locked drawer.

"Emily kept it.""

"Why?""

"Because she discovered the signature had been copied onto a second document.""

I opened the drawer.

Inside was a thick envelope.

There were two versions of the agreement.

The first contained my original signature.

The second contained a forged amendment.

It changed the beneficiary.

Instead of Noah and Lily, the assets would pass to a private company.

I read the company's name.

*Whitmore Holdings.*

Paul's company.

He hadn't simply tried to steal the inheritance.

He had spent twelve years preparing to take control of it legally.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

"Marcus, we have a situation.""

"What happened?""

"Paul filed an emergency petition this morning. He's claiming Noah's inheritance is disputed and requesting temporary control of the archive.""

"Can he do that?""

"Not if we produce the original trust agreement.""

I looked at the envelope.

"Then we have it.""

"There's another problem. The petition includes your signature.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course it does.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Marcus, there's a clause in the agreement that could expose you to personal liability.""

"What clause?""

"If the original authorization is deemed valid, you could be held responsible for the unauthorized transfer of company assets.""

I looked at Rachel.

She was listening.

"So Paul is trying to make me look like the person who stole the money.""

"Exactly.""

I ended the call.

Rachel stepped closer.

"Marcus, you need to see Emily.""

"Take me to her.""

We drove to the clinic outside Millbrook.

It was a quiet medical facility surrounded by pine trees.

Rachel led me through the entrance and down a corridor.

At the end was a private room.

The door was slightly open.

I stopped.

I could hear a woman's voice.

"Is that you, Rachel?""

My heart nearly stopped.

Emily.

Her voice.

After six years.

Rachel gently pushed the door open.

Emily was sitting beside the window.

Her hair was shorter than I remembered. There were faint lines around her eyes, and she looked thinner.

But she was alive.

She turned.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then she whispered my name.

"Marcus.""

I walked toward her.

My knees felt weak.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

Why hadn't she called?

Why had she left Noah?

Why had she allowed me to bury an empty grave?

But when I reached her, I couldn't say any of them.

I simply took her hand.

She began crying.

"I'm sorry.""

I lowered my head.

"Do you know what Noah went through?""

She closed her eyes.

"Every day.""

"He thought you were dead.""

"I know.""

"He visited your grave.""

Emily covered her mouth.

"I know.""

"Then why?""

She looked at me.

"Because Paul threatened to hurt him. He showed me photographs of Noah leaving school. He told me he had people watching you.""

I swallowed.

"You could have told me.""

"I tried.""

"What?""

"Marcus, I called you three times after I disappeared. Every call was answered by someone else. The last time, I heard Paul's voice.""

I stared at her.

"Paul intercepted your calls?""

She nodded.

"He told me you had signed the agreement transferring Noah's inheritance. He said if I returned, the company would be investigated and Noah would lose everything.""

I sat beside her.

"Why didn't you trust me?""

Emily took a shaky breath.

"Because the document had your signature.""

I looked down.

"I didn't know what I was signing.""

"I know that now.""

She squeezed my hand.

"That's why I came back.""

I looked toward the other side of the room.

A man stood near the window.

He was older, with a scar running along his jaw.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

"Ethan?""

My brother stepped forward.

"Hey, little brother.""

I stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

I grabbed him.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I punched his shoulder.

"You're alive!""

He laughed through tears.

"I know.""

I pulled him into a hug.

"Do you have any idea what you did to me?""

"I do.""

"Mom died thinking you were dead. I buried you.""

Ethan's face fell.

"I'm sorry.""

We stood together for a long moment.

Then I stepped back.

"Why didn't you come home?""

Ethan looked at Emily.

"Because Paul had evidence that could destroy all of us. He'd forged documents using your signature. He threatened to have you arrested if we came forward.""

I shook my head.

"Then we should have fought him.""

"We weren't ready.""

"Neither was Noah. But he had to live with it.""

Ethan lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

Emily reached for my hand.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

She opened a bedside drawer.

Inside was a sealed document.

"The final trust agreement.""

I looked at it.

"Is this the original?""

She nodded.

"It contains the real beneficiary instructions.""

I opened the envelope.

The first page listed Noah and Lily as equal beneficiaries.

The second named Rachel as temporary guardian.

The third contained a clause that I hadn't seen before.

If either child was threatened or forced to surrender their inheritance, the entire archive would automatically be transferred to an independent legal custodian.

I read the final line.

*CUSTODIAN: MARCUS CARTER.*

I looked at Emily.

"Why am I listed?""

She smiled sadly.

"Because Ethan and I never stopped trusting you.""

Before I could respond, Ethan's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

"Marcus, Paul is here.""

I stood.

"Where?""

"Outside the clinic.""

Emily's face went pale.

Then Ethan added:

"He isn't alone.""

Through the window, I saw two black cars pulling into the parking lot.

May you like

And stepping out of the first car was Vanessa.

She was holding Noah's school photograph.
