Chapter 9: My Wife's Connection to My Dead Brother
I couldn't move.
The birth certificate was still in my hand.
Vanessa Reed.
Ethan Carter.
A child born twelve years earlier.
My brother had been dead for twelve years.
Vanessa had entered my life three years ago.
And somehow, she had been connected to him long before that.
"Explain," I said.
Vanessa wiped her face.
"I met Ethan when I was twenty-four.""
"How?""
"Through work. I was an assistant at a financial consulting firm. He was helping your father with a property acquisition.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The baby was wrapped in a white blanket.
"Is that your daughter?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Her name is Lily.""
I stared at her.
"Where is she?""
"She's alive.""
"Does she know who her father was?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She believes her father died before she was born.""
I sat down on a metal crate.
"Why didn't Ethan tell me?""
"Because your father wouldn't allow it.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"Your father believed Ethan's relationship with me would damage the family business. He was already dealing with financial problems. He thought a child outside marriage would create another scandal.""
"That's not an answer.""
Vanessa looked at the floor.
"Ethan wanted to marry me.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You're telling me my brother wanted to marry you, but you eventually married me?""
Her eyes filled.
"Yes.""
The room seemed to close in around me.
"Did you know who I was when we met?""
"Of course.""
"Did you approach me because I was his brother?""
"No.""
"Then why?""
She hesitated.
"Because Ethan asked me to look after you.""
I stared at her.
She continued.
"Before he died, he made me promise something. He said if anything happened to him, I had to make sure Noah was protected.""
I shook my head.
"Noah wasn't even born when Ethan died.""
"He knew Emily was pregnant.""
I looked at her.
"How?""
"Because he was helping Emily with the family trust.""
I felt another wave of confusion.
My brother had apparently known about Noah's inheritance before Noah was born.
He had created a trust.
He had fathered a daughter.
And Vanessa had been part of his life.
Yet I'd known none of it.
"Why did Emily write that I shouldn't trust you?""
Vanessa began crying.
"Because I failed her.""
"How?""
"Paul convinced me that the trust was going to collapse. He told me the only way to protect Lily was to transfer the archive before Noah turned eighteen.""
"Why would Noah's inheritance affect Lily?""
"Because the trust was designed to divide certain assets between Ethan's children.""
I looked at the documents.
"Then Lily should inherit part of it.""
"She was supposed to.""
"Was?""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"Paul changed the beneficiary documents after Ethan died.""
I felt sick.
"How much money are we talking about?""
"More than twenty million dollars.""
I stared at her.
The number seemed unreal.
But the money wasn't what frightened me.
It was the fact that people had apparently been willing to destroy a family to control it.
"Why did you pack Noah's suitcase?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because I found out Emily had left a separate legal instruction. It gave Noah complete control of the archive on his eighteenth birthday.""
"And you thought throwing him out would stop that?""
"I thought I could get the key before he found it.""
"You threatened to call the police on him.""
"I was desperate.""
"You tried to make him believe his father would abandon him.""
Vanessa started sobbing.
"I didn't want to hurt him.""
I stood.
"Then why did you?""
She had no answer.
Daniel approached the cabinet.
"Marcus, we need to secure these documents.""
I nodded.
He carefully placed the files into a protective case.
Then he examined the hard drive.
"This contains the original financial records.""
"Can you copy them?""
"Yes. But I recommend we do it somewhere secure.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Who else knows about this?""
"Paul.""
"Anyone else?""
She shook her head.
"That's not true," I said.
She looked at me.
"You told me three people knew the truth. Your father, Emily, and someone who was protecting Noah.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"That's what your father wrote?""
I nodded.
She looked toward the ceiling.
Then she whispered, "Rachel.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"My sister?""
"She wasn't just holding the key.""
"What do you mean?""
"Emily gave her the original trust agreement. Rachel was listed as Noah's legal guardian if anything happened to you.""
I stared at her.
"Why would Emily choose Rachel instead of me?""
"Because she was afraid someone would use your position in the company against you.""
I didn't know what to say.
My sister had been carrying secrets for six years.
And now I understood why she had refused to explain everything over the phone.
Before I could ask another question, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
"Yes?""
His expression changed.
He listened for several seconds.
Then he looked at me.
"Marcus, we have a problem.""
"What?""
"The police are at your house.""
My heart dropped.
"Why?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Someone filed a report accusing Noah of stealing confidential company documents.""
I stared at Vanessa.
She looked horrified.
"Who filed it?""
Daniel checked his screen.
Then he answered.
"Paul Whitmore.""
I reached for my phone.
But before I could call Rachel, another notification appeared.
A message from an unknown number.
If you want Noah to stay out of prison, bring the original trust agreement to the courthouse tomorrow morning.
I read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
And come alone.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you know Paul was going to do this?""
She shook her head.
"I swear I didn't.""
I wanted to believe her.
But I had learned what her promises were worth.
Daniel closed the protective case.
"We need to get to Noah.""
I nodded.
As we left Unit 408, Vanessa called after me.
"Marcus!""
I stopped.
She stood beside the open cabinet, her face pale.
"There's one more thing you need to know about Lily.""
I turned.
"What?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"She isn't just Ethan's daughter.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa's voice broke.
"She's the reason Emily agreed to help Ethan create the trust.""
I stared at her.
"Explain.""
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Because Emily knew Lily was in danger long before Noah was born.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Then Vanessa said the words I would spend the rest of my life trying to understand.
"Marcus, your brother didn't die in that car accident.""
She paused.
May you like
"He was trying to get Lily away from Paul.""
And suddenly, the entire family history I thought I knew became a lie.
