Chapter 12: Emily Was Still Alive
I grabbed the edge of the metal shelf.
For six years, I'd believed my wife was dead.
I'd watched Noah grow up without her.
I'd explained death to a little boy who cried himself to sleep because he wanted his mother back.
And now an elderly doctor was standing in front of me, telling me she might still be alive.
"Where is Emily?""
Dr. Hayes closed the door behind him.
"First, I need you to calm down.""
"Don't tell me to calm down.""
"Marcus, if you want to see your wife again, you need to listen.""
I stared at him.
Vanessa stood beside the cabinet, trembling.
Dr. Hayes opened the folder.
"The night Emily was admitted, she was suffering from complications after an assault. She had been followed for weeks. Someone had attacked her outside her home.""
"Who?""
"She never identified the attacker.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you know?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Emily begged me not to.""
Dr. Hayes continued.
"Emily believed the attack was connected to the financial investigation. She was afraid Paul would return if he discovered she had survived.""
"Then why was another woman buried under her name?""
The doctor lowered his eyes.
"The woman who died that night was Vanessa's colleague. She had been helping Emily gather evidence. Her identity was used to protect Emily.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Your colleague?""
She nodded.
"Her name was Claire Morgan.""
I remembered the name from the financial documents.
"Was Claire the second occupant in Ethan's car?""
Dr. Hayes looked surprised.
"Yes.""
I stepped backward.
The unidentified second occupant.
The woman who had died in the car accident.
Claire.
"So Ethan was driving her?""
"No," Dr. Hayes said quietly.
"Claire was the one driving.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"Ethan was alive when the vehicle was recovered. He had escaped through the passenger side. He suffered serious injuries, but he survived the initial accident.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Then where is he?""
The doctor looked at Vanessa.
She covered her mouth.
Dr. Hayes spoke carefully.
"Ethan was taken to a private clinic. He remained unconscious for several days. When he woke, he was informed that Claire had died and that Paul had already arranged to identify him as the deceased.""
I couldn't speak.
"My brother was alive?""
"Yes.""
"Where is he?""
The doctor shook his head.
"I don't know where he is now.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"You knew my brother was alive for twelve years?""
"Marcus, I was trying to protect him.""
"From me?""
"From Paul.""
I slammed my hand against the shelf.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Ethan made me promise.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Another promise. Everyone in this family has been making promises while Noah and I lived with lies.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
I turned back to Dr. Hayes.
"Where is Emily?""
He opened another folder.
Inside was a recent photograph.
A woman stood outside a small house surrounded by trees.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face was older.
But I recognized her immediately.
Emily.
My wife.
Alive.
My knees weakened.
I reached for the photograph.
"Where was this taken?""
"Three weeks ago," Dr. Hayes said.
"Where?""
"North Carolina.""
I looked at him.
"Why would she be there?""
"Because that's where Ethan went after he recovered.""
I stared at the photograph.
The woman beside Emily was holding a small suitcase.
And standing behind them was a man.
A man with the same face I'd seen in family photographs all my life.
My brother.
Ethan.
Alive.
I felt tears filling my eyes.
"Why didn't they come home?""
Dr. Hayes looked at the floor.
"Because they believed Paul had people watching your family. They thought returning would put Noah in danger.""
I shook my head.
"Noah has spent six years believing his mother was dead.""
"I know.""
"He's seventeen.""
"I know.""
"His eighteenth birthday is in eleven days.""
Dr. Hayes nodded.
"That's why Emily left instructions for the archive to be released then. She wanted Noah old enough to understand what happened before anyone could take control of the trust.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"And you tried to stop it.""
She nodded.
"I was wrong.""
"Why did you pack his suitcase?""
She looked up.
"Paul told me Noah had already found the keycard. He said if Noah reached the archive, the original documents would become public.""
"And you believed him?""
"Yes.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Emily and Ethan.
Together.
Alive.
For the first time in six years, I felt hope.
But it came with an unbearable question.
If Emily and Ethan were alive, why had neither of them contacted Noah?
Dr. Hayes seemed to understand.
"There's something else.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He removed another document.
It was a handwritten note dated just four days earlier.
Emily's handwriting.
Marcus,
I know you may hate me for staying away. I know Noah deserves an explanation. But I cannot return until the final document is secured.
Paul has discovered that the original trust agreement contains a clause that could expose everyone involved in the fraud.
I swallowed.
There is one person who has been helping him from inside your family.
My eyes moved to the final paragraph.
It isn't Vanessa.
I looked up.
Dr. Hayes nodded.
"Emily believes Paul has another accomplice.""
"Who?""
The doctor hesitated.
Then he said:
"Someone who has been receiving money from the trust for twelve years.""
I looked at the photograph of Ethan.
Then at the financial statements.
A name appeared repeatedly beside the suspicious transactions.
A name I had never expected to see.
*RACHEL CARTER.*
My sister.
I stared at the document.
"No.""
Dr. Hayes lowered his voice.
"Marcus, I'm afraid your sister wasn't just protecting Noah.""
He paused.
"She was being paid to keep him away from the truth.""
I felt my phone vibrate.
A message from Rachel appeared.
Marcus, I know you've spoken to Dr. Hayes. Please don't believe anything he tells you.
Another message arrived.
I need to explain what happened to Emily.
Then a photograph.
It showed Rachel standing beside a hospital bed.
And lying in that bed was a woman with Emily's face.
But the date on the photograph was not six years ago.
It was yesterday.
I looked at the screen.
My sister had known Emily was alive.
And beneath the photograph was a final message.
If you want to see your wife, come alone. There's something I need to show you before Noah turns eighteen.
I slowly lowered my phone.
May you like
Because suddenly, the most dangerous person in this entire story might not have been Vanessa.
It might have been the sister who had promised to protect my son.
