Chapter 13: My Sister's Final Confession

I read Rachel's message three times.

If you want to see your wife, come alone.

For six years, I'd believed Emily was dead.

For twelve years, I'd believed Ethan was dead.

And now I was discovering that the people I had mourned were alive, while the people I had trusted had spent years keeping the truth from me.

I looked at Dr. Hayes.

"Where is Rachel?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I showed him the photograph.

He studied it carefully.

"That's Emily's room.""

"At the clinic?""

He nodded.

"She's been receiving treatment there.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"How long have you known?""

She wiped her eyes.

"About Emily? Since the beginning.""

"And Rachel?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"I knew Rachel was involved in the trust. I didn't know she was receiving money.""

I looked at her.

"You're telling me my sister was paid to keep her own nephew away from his mother?""

"I don't know what Rachel was told.""

I walked toward the door.

Daniel followed.

"Marcus, you shouldn't go alone.""

"Rachel asked me to come alone.""

"That's exactly why you shouldn't.""

I stopped.

He was right.

But I also knew Rachel.

She had been my sister long before she became a name on a financial statement.

If she had answers, I wanted to hear them from her.

"Keep the documents secure," I told Daniel.

"And make sure Vanessa doesn't leave with anything.""

Vanessa looked up.

"Marcus, please.""

I didn't turn around.

I drove to Rachel's apartment.

The building was quiet.

Her car was parked outside, but the front door was unlocked.

I entered.

"Rachel?""

No answer.

The living room looked normal. A cup of coffee sat on the table. Her television was playing quietly.

Then I noticed a photograph beside the fireplace.

It showed Rachel holding Noah as a newborn.

Emily stood beside her, smiling.

On the back was a message.

Thank you for keeping my son safe.

I turned the photograph over again.

A second note had been written beneath the first.

If anything happens to me, tell Marcus the truth.

My stomach tightened.

I heard a door open upstairs.

Rachel appeared at the top of the staircase.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was uncombed, and her eyes were swollen.

"You're here.""

I stared at her.

"Where is Emily?""

Rachel descended slowly.

"Safe.""

"Where?""

"At the clinic.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She stopped halfway down.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Paul?""

She nodded.

"Of Paul, of Vanessa, and of what your father had done.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps telling me they're protecting someone. Meanwhile, my son has spent years believing his mother was dead.""

Rachel reached the bottom step.

"I know.""

"No, you don't. You watched him grow up. You watched him visit her grave. You watched him cry on Mother's Day.""

Her face crumpled.

"I know, Marcus.""

"Then tell me why.""

She sat down.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Finally, she began.

"Emily discovered that Paul had been using the family trust to conceal payments connected to several illegal property transfers. Your father knew about some of it, but he didn't know how deeply Paul was involved.""

"And Ethan?""

"Ethan found the original accounts. He realized Paul was using his name to move money.""

"That's why he created the trust?""

"Yes. He wanted to protect the assets for his children.""

I sat opposite her.

"Why did you receive money?""

Rachel looked down.

"Because Paul approached me after Emily disappeared.""

"How much?""

"Two hundred thousand dollars over six years.""

I stared at her.

"Two hundred thousand?""

She nodded.

"What did you do for him?""

"Nothing illegal at first. He wanted me to report whether you were asking questions about the company. He wanted to know if Noah had mentioned anything about Emily.""

"And you agreed?""

"I needed money.""

I stared at her.

"You're my sister.""

"I know.""

"You had a home. You had a job. You had family.""

Rachel began crying.

"I was drowning, Marcus. I had debts I couldn't pay. Paul knew about them. He offered to help.""

"And when did you realize what he was doing?""

"When he asked me to keep Noah away from Unit 408.""

My jaw tightened.

"What did you do?""

"I refused.""

"Then why did you tell Vanessa about the key?""

Rachel looked up sharply.

"I didn't.""

I went still.

"What?""

"I never told Vanessa where the key was. She found it because she followed me.""

I remembered the photograph Daniel had shown me.

Vanessa entering my house.

The memory box in her hands.

The silver key.

Rachel continued.

"Emily had given me the key and the original trust agreement. I hid them because I knew Paul would come looking.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Emily made me promise to wait until Noah was eighteen unless Vanessa tried to force him out of the house.""

I stared at her.

"She knew Vanessa would pack his suitcase?""

Rachel nodded.

"She said Vanessa would eventually become desperate.""

I looked away.

Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

"Did you know Emily was alive?""

Rachel nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know Ethan was alive?""

Another nod.

I stood.

"How long?""

"Emily contacted me six years ago. Ethan contacted me four years later.""

I felt my hands trembling.

"Why didn't you bring them home?""

"Because Paul had threatened Noah.""

"What did he threaten to do?""

Rachel opened a drawer and removed a document.

She placed it on the table.

It was a photograph of Noah leaving school.

Another showed him walking into our house.

Another showed him sitting in the passenger seat of my car.

Each photograph had a date.

Some were from years earlier.

I felt sick.

"Paul was following my son?""

Rachel nodded.

"He told me that if Emily returned, Noah would become the target of a legal investigation. He said he would accuse you of misusing company assets and have Noah removed from your custody.""

I stared at the photographs.

"And you believed him?""

"I was terrified.""

I looked at her.

"Where is Emily now?""

"At the clinic. Ethan is with her.""

"Take me there.""

Rachel stood.

"Marcus, there's something you need to see first.""

She reached into the drawer again and removed a sealed envelope.

On the front was my name.

Inside was a letter from Emily.

But this time, it wasn't a warning.

It was a confession.

Marcus,

I know you will have questions. I know you will be angry.

But there is one thing I need you to understand.

The night I disappeared, I wasn't trying to leave you.

I was trying to save Noah.

I continued reading.

Your father had discovered that Paul intended to use Noah's inheritance as leverage. He believed someone inside the family was helping Paul.

He was wrong about one thing.

The person Paul needed wasn't Rachel.

I stopped.

Rachel looked at me.

I turned the page.

The final paragraph contained a name.

*MARCUS CARTER.*

I stared at it.

Beneath my name, Emily had written:

Paul had already obtained your signature before you knew what you were signing.

My blood ran cold.

Rachel whispered, "Marcus, I think Paul used you to authorize the original transfer.""

I looked at the document.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Mine.

And I suddenly remembered the paperwork I'd signed after my father's funeral.

One document had been described as a routine company restructuring agreement.

I'd signed it without reading every page.

I looked at Rachel.

"What did I authorize?""

She swallowed.

"The transfer of the archive.""

"To whom?""

She couldn't answer.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Hello, Marcus. I believe it's time we discussed your brother's inheritance.""

I recognized the voice immediately.

Paul Whitmore.

He laughed softly.

"Bring the original trust agreement to me. And don't make me ask twice.""

I looked at Rachel.

Then at the photographs of Noah.

Paul continued.

"Because if you don't, your son will learn exactly what his father signed twelve years ago.""

The call ended.

May you like

And for the first time, I understood that the final battle wasn't about my wife's secrets.

It was about the secret I had unknowingly signed away.
