Chapter 6: The Woman in Emily's Photograph
By the time we reached the security office, half the monitors were flashing warning messages.
Daniel rushed to the main workstation.
"Who authorized the remote connection?""
The employee, Melissa, looked terrified.
"I don't know. It came through the administrator portal.""
"Disconnect the system.""
"I tried. It won't let me.""
Daniel typed rapidly.
I stood behind him, watching file after file disappear.
Emily's letters.
Financial records.
Property agreements.
Archived correspondence.
All of it was being deleted.
"Can you stop it?"" I asked.
"I'm trying.""
"Daniel!""
He slammed his hand against the desk.
"The connection is using your administrator credentials.""
I stared at him.
"Again?""
He nodded.
"Someone has access to your private authorization.""
I pulled out my phone.
My banking applications, company email, and security portal were all connected to the same account.
Someone had been inside my digital life.
For how long?
I didn't know.
"Can you trace the connection?""
Daniel opened another window.
"Give me a minute.""
On the monitor, a new message appeared.
*ARCHIVE PURGE: 82% COMPLETE.*
"Can we save the original documents?"" I asked.
"Some of them. The system has an offline backup, but it's stored separately.""
"Where?""
"Your father's old office.""
I frowned.
"The headquarters?""
Daniel nodded.
"The basement archive. The one nobody has accessed since the building renovation.""
I remembered that room.
My father had used it to store old contracts and personal correspondence. After he died, I'd ordered the basement renovated, but I'd never touched the locked cabinet at the back.
"Can we retrieve it?""
"Yes, but we need the physical master key.""
I looked toward Paul.
"Where is it?""
He remained silent.
Daniel turned to him.
"Mr. Whitmore?""
Paul adjusted his jacket.
"I don't know.""
I stepped closer.
"Stop lying.""
He sighed.
"Your father gave the key to Emily.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"Emily had the key?""
"Yes.""
"Where is it now?""
Paul looked down.
"I don't know.""
I grabbed the photograph again.
My father and Vanessa.
Three months before Emily died.
"Why was Vanessa meeting my father?""
Paul hesitated.
"She was investigating the missing funds.""
"Then why did Emily write that I should never trust her with Noah?""
"Because Emily discovered that Vanessa wasn't working alone.""
I went still.
"Who was helping her?""
Paul looked toward Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Someone close to your family.""
Before I could press him, my phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered immediately.
"What's wrong?""
"Marcus, Noah is asking for you.""
"Is he okay?""
"He's fine, but something happened.""
My chest tightened.
"What happened?""
"Vanessa came here.""
I straightened.
"What?""
"She showed up twenty minutes ago. She said she wanted to apologize to Noah.""
"Did you let her in?""
"No. I remembered what you told me. But she started shouting outside the door.""
I closed my eyes.
"What did she say?""
Rachel hesitated.
"She said Noah was making a terrible mistake. Then she told him his mother had stolen something before she died.""
I gripped the phone.
"What?""
"That's not all. She said if Noah opened Unit 408, he'd find out why Emily really died.""
The room seemed to tilt again.
"Where is Noah now?""
"Inside. He's safe.""
"Keep him there. Don't open the door for anyone.""
I ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
"What happened?""
"Vanessa went to Rachel's.""
I turned toward Paul.
"How did she know Noah was there?""
Paul didn't answer.
I leaned closer.
"How?""
He finally spoke.
"Because she's been monitoring the family for years.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
"She has access to your household security system, your location-sharing account, and some of your private correspondence.""
I felt sick.
My wife had been watching us.
Possibly since before we married.
Daniel interrupted.
"Marcus, I found something.""
He turned the monitor toward me.
The remote connection had been stopped.
But not before the system captured the source of the login.
A name appeared.
*VANESSA REED — VERIFIED DEVICE.*
I stared at it.
Then another notification appeared.
*FILE RECOVERY AVAILABLE: 1 DOCUMENT.*
Daniel clicked.
A scanned letter opened.
It was dated two days before Emily died.
My hands trembled as I read the first line.
Marcus, I know you believe Vanessa is helping us. Please forgive me for not telling you sooner.
I felt my throat tighten.
The letter continued.
Your father discovered that someone had been using Noah's future inheritance as collateral for a private financial arrangement. If anything happens to me, do not let anyone persuade you that it was an accident.
I stopped reading.
Daniel looked at me.
"Keep going.""
I forced myself to continue.
I have the original evidence. I hid it where nobody would think to look. The key is with the person who has loved Noah since before he was born.
I read that sentence twice.
Who could that be?
Rachel?
Emily's sister?
Her old friend?
Then I reached the signature.
I love you. I love Noah. Please believe me.
Emily.
My Emily.
I sat down.
For six years, I had lived with the belief that I hadn't done enough to save her.
Now I was discovering that she had spent her final days trying to protect our son from people I had welcomed into our home.
My phone vibrated again.
This time, it was a message from an unknown number.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Just a photograph.
I opened it.
It showed a small silver key lying on a kitchen table.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
*ASK RACHEL WHAT SHE HID FROM YOU.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Your sister has the key to Unit 408. But she isn't the only one who knows where the evidence is.
I immediately called Rachel.
She answered after one ring.
"Marcus?""
I looked at Emily's letter.
"Rachel, I need you to tell me something.""
"What?""
"Did Emily give you a key before she died?""
Silence.
Not the silence of someone confused.
The silence of someone who had been waiting years for that question.
Finally, Rachel whispered:
"She made me promise I would never give it to you unless Vanessa tried to get Noah out of the house.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why?""
Rachel began crying.
"Because Emily knew Vanessa would eventually try to take everything from him.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where is the key?""
Rachel took a shaky breath.
Then she said something that made my entire world collapse.
"It's in the same place where we buried your first wife's last secret.""
I stood up.
"Rachel, what are you talking about?""
Her voice broke.
"Marcus, Emily didn't die in the hospital.""
I couldn't breathe.
"What?""
"She was alive when they brought her home. And before she died, she told me who had been following her.""
"Who?""
Rachel whispered a name.
May you like
A name I had heard only minutes earlier.
*Paul Whitmore.*
