Chapter 9: The Child Hidden in the Past

The name on the letter stared back at me.

*Vanessa Carter.*

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

My brain rejected it.

Like it was a sentence written in a language I didn’t know.

I looked at the envelope again.

My father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had signed birthday cards.

The same handwriting that had written notes on my lunch when I was a child.

A handwriting I would recognize anywhere.

But the words inside felt impossible.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like she had already known this moment would come.

“Why is your name on my father’s letter?””

Her lips trembled.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

I felt something break inside me.

“That is the only way anyone tells me anything.””

My voice was quiet.

“By accident.””

Nobody spoke.

I unfolded the letter.

The paper was old.

Yellowed.

Carefully hidden.

My father had written it years ago.

Alex,

There are things a father should tell his son himself. I failed to do that.

I swallowed.

The room disappeared.

There was only the letter.

Only the truth.

Before you judge Vanessa, understand that she did not create this situation. She was born into it.

I looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

Born into what?

I kept reading.

When I invested in the clinic, I discovered records that should never have existed.

My fingers tightened.

I found out someone had used my name to cover mistakes they made.

My heart raced.

Mistakes.

I also discovered a child whose existence had been hidden.

I stopped.

The same words Emily had said.

Another baby.

Another child.

I tried to correct what happened, but I was too late.

The letter shook in my hands.

Vanessa deserves to know the truth about her own birth.

My eyes lifted.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Your father…”

She couldn’t finish.

I looked at her.

“What does this mean?””

She wiped her tears.

“It means I was never supposed to find out either.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, you need to explain.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

For the first time since I came home, she looked completely defeated.

“My entire life, I thought I knew who I was.””

She looked at the letter.

“Then Emily found out before I did.””

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She discovered my original medical records.””

My stomach tightened.

“The clinic records?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“My birth records.””

The room went silent.

I waited.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was adopted.””

Nobody moved.

The revelation landed softly.

But it changed everything.

“I never knew my biological parents.””

She looked at the floor.

“I was told they died.””

I stared.

“And they didn’t?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who were they?””

Vanessa looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“My mother worked at the clinic.””

I felt a chill.

“And your father?””

Her voice became smaller.

“That’s the part nobody wanted me to know.””

I already knew.

Before she said it.

Somewhere deep inside, I knew.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

My hands went cold.

“Say it.””

She whispered:

“Your father was my biological father.””

The room went completely silent.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Because that meant too many things.

Too many impossible things.

My father.

Vanessa.

The clinic.

The records.

Everything connected.

“You’re saying…”

My voice failed.

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Michael.

“Did you know?””

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

“You knew.””

“I found out after Emily.””

My anger exploded.

“Everyone knew!””

My voice echoed through the room.

“Everyone knew pieces of my life except me!””

Lily appeared at the hallway entrance again.

I immediately lowered my voice.

She looked scared.

I walked toward her.

“Hey.””

She looked up.

“Are you mad?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I knelt.

“I’m just trying to understand something.””

She nodded.

“Is Mommy coming home?””

I looked at the phone.

Emily was still there.

Listening.

Waiting.

“I hope so.””

Lily smiled faintly.

“She said she missed me.””

My eyes burned.

“She did.””

Lily hugged me.

And in that moment, everything else disappeared.

Not the lies.

Not the betrayal.

Not the secrets.

Just my daughter.

My reason to keep going.

After she returned to the officer, I faced Vanessa again.

“You knew Emily was looking into this.””

“Yes.””

“And you hid it.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Of losing you.””

The answer made me angry.

“Because of the truth?””

“Yes.””

I stared.

She continued.

“When Emily found out who my father was, she came to me.””

“What did she say?””

“She told me she thought someone had intentionally hidden my identity.””

“Who?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“We didn’t know.””

“Then why did she disappear?””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because someone found out she knew.””

I looked at Michael.

“Who?””

Michael finally spoke.

“The person who attacked Emily.””

My eyes moved toward him.

“You saw them?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

He hesitated.

“I never saw his face.””

“Then how do you know who it was?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“Because he knew things only one person could know.””

“Who?””

Michael’s voice was barely audible.

“Your father’s old business partner.””

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

His face changed.

Like he had just remembered something.

“The clinic investor records.””

I frowned.

“What about them?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“They weren’t only connected to Alex’s father.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“They were connected to someone else.””

“Who?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

His phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Not again.

Slowly, Daniel looked at the screen.

His face went white.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Daniel turned the phone around.

A message.

One sentence.

*Stop digging, or the next person who disappears won’t be Emily.*

The room went silent.

Then Emily’s voice came through the phone.

“Alex.””

I lifted it.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“You need to leave the house.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because they know you found the letter.””

I looked around.

“The police are here.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Not the police.””

I frowned.

“Then who?””

A sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

Emily gasped.

Then whispered:

“Alex…”

“What?””

“He found me.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

The line crackled.

Then Emily said one final sentence before the call cut off.

“The man who made me disappear is standing in my room.””

The phone went dead.

Everyone froze.

Then the lights in my house flickered.

Once.

Twice.

May you like

And from downstairs…

The front door slowly opened.
