Chapter 5: The Voice From Six Years Ago
For six years, I had imagined what Emily’s voice would sound like if I ever heard it again.
I thought it would be different.
Broken.
Angry.
Maybe distant.
I thought time would have changed it.
But when she said my name, my entire body recognized her before my mind could catch up.
“Alex…”
I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.
“Emily?””
A shaky breath came through the speaker.
“Yes.””
My eyes closed.
For one impossible second, I was back in our old kitchen.
Emily was standing barefoot on the tile floor.
Lily was laughing in her high chair.
The smell of coffee filled the room.
Before everything disappeared.
“Where are you?”” I whispered.
There was silence.
Not a normal silence.
The kind where someone is afraid that one wrong word will destroy everything.
“I can’t tell you yet.””
My heart sank.
“After six years, you call me and say you can’t tell me where you are?””
“I know how it sounds.””
“You have no idea how it sounds.””
My voice cracked.
“I buried you in my head.””
Emily went quiet.
Then I heard her crying.
Not loudly.
Just enough.
“I know.””
I looked across the room.
Vanessa was watching me.
Her face had lost all color.
She knew this was Emily.
She knew.
“Why didn’t you come back?”” I asked.
The question had lived inside me for six years.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every night Lily asked if her mother remembered her.
Why?
Why didn’t you come home?
Emily whispered:
“Because I tried.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I tried, Alex.””
My hand slowly lowered.
“What are you talking about?””
“I came back three times.””
The room spun.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I stood outside our house.””
I looked toward Vanessa.
She looked down.
“I saw Lily through the window.””
My breathing stopped.
“She was playing in the living room.””
Emily’s voice broke.
“I wanted to run inside and hold her.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because someone was watching me.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Vanessa.””
Everyone heard the name.
The officer.
Michael.
Me.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
Emily continued.
“She found me before I could reach you.””
I looked at my wife.
The woman who had slept beside me.
The woman who had kissed my daughter goodnight.
The woman who had told me she loved us.
“What did she do?””
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“She showed me a video.””
I frowned.
“What video?””
“A video of Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“What kind of video?””
“She made it look like Lily was afraid of me.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Emily sounded certain.
“She told me if I came back, she would make sure everyone believed I was dangerous.””
My stomach turned.
“She threatened you?””
“She threatened Lily.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Every head turned.
The officer moved closer.
“Mrs. Carter, please remain quiet.””
But Vanessa ignored him.
“She’s manipulating you.””
I looked at her.
“Like she manipulated me?””
Her mouth closed.
That answer hurt more than words.
I walked away from her.
“Emily, where are you now?””
“I’m safe.””
“Safe where?””
“I’m with someone who helped me.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who knew the truth before you did.””
My eyes moved toward Michael.
He looked away.
“Michael knew?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
I felt something inside me collapse.
My brother.
Again.
Everyone knew pieces of my life except me.
“Michael,” I said.
He looked at me.
“What?””
“You knew she was alive.””
His face changed.
“Alex—”
“You knew.””
The pain on his face told me I was right.
“I found out later.””
“Later?””
I laughed bitterly.
“How much later?””
He didn’t respond.
“Years?””
Michael looked down.
“Two years after she disappeared.””
I stared at him.
Two years.
He knew for two years.
“You saw her.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I thought she was safer away from you.””
The anger that rose in me scared even myself.
“You thought my daughter was safer without her father knowing her mother was alive?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Michael looked toward Lily’s room.
“I thought you were safer.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, Emily spoke through the phone.
“Michael saved my life.””
Everyone looked at him.
I felt confused.
Angry.
Lost.
“What?””
Emily continued.
“After Vanessa found me, she told me Alex would hate me if I came back.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“Because she had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Emily hesitated.
Then said:
“That I had abandoned Lily.””
My stomach tightened.
The same lie.
The same story.
The same wound.
“She showed me fake messages,” Emily said.
“Messages from my phone.””
My hands went cold.
“Fake?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“She made it look like I left by choice.””
The officer immediately looked at Vanessa.
“Did you have access to Mrs. Carter’s phone?””
Vanessa said nothing.
That was enough.
“Vanessa,” I said quietly.
She looked at me.
“Tell me you didn’t.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
My heart broke.
Not because I believed her.
Because I finally understood.
She had spent years protecting herself.
And everyone else had paid the price.
“You changed records.””
Silence.
“You hid letters.””
Silence.
“You lied about Emily leaving.””
More silence.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.””
The room went still.
The officer immediately stepped closer.
“You’re admitting this?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I didn’t mean for it to become this.””
I stared at her.
“How does it become anything else?””
She covered her face.
“I just wanted a chance.””
“A chance?””
I looked at Lily’s bedroom.
“A chance to replace her?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I loved Lily.””
“You hurt her.””
“I lost control.””
The words made my blood run cold.
Because people who lose control often say the same thing.
They make it sound accidental.
Like the damage just happened around them.
But Lily’s wrists had marks.
The rope had been tied by someone’s hands.
A choice had been made.
Not a mistake.
I turned back to the phone.
“Emily.””
“I’m here.””
“Tell me everything.””
She was silent.
Then:
“I can’t over the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa isn’t the only person involved.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at Michael.
“Who else?””
Emily took a breath.
“Someone who helped her hide everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Before Emily could answer, the front door opened.
An officer downstairs shouted.
“Stop right there!””
Everyone turned.
A second later, footsteps moved quickly up the stairs.
Someone was coming toward us.
Michael’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
The person appeared in the doorway.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
And holding a folder.
He looked directly at me.
Then at the letters.
Then at Vanessa.
“I told you this day would come.””
My blood went cold.
Because I knew him.
Everyone in the room knew him.
It was the man who had signed my divorce papers six years ago.
The man who claimed Emily abandoned me.
The man who had comforted me when my world fell apart.
My lawyer.
And my brother’s closest friend.
Daniel.
He slowly walked into the room.
Then placed the folder on the table.
“I think it’s time Alex learns what really happened the night Emily disappeared.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
One sentence was visible.
And I felt my entire body go numb.
*Temporary custody transfer agreement.*
Signed six years ago.
With my name.
May you like
And Emily’s name.
But neither of us had ever seen it before.
