Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Records

The room stopped breathing.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was Lily’s quiet breathing beside me.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The person I had protected with every piece of myself since the day she was born.

And now someone was telling me the one thing I thought I knew better than anything else was a lie.

“Say that again.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

Emily was silent on the phone.

“Alex…”

“Say it again.””

I looked at Michael.

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

Not denying it.

Not defending herself.

Crying.

That terrified me more than anything.

“Lily is my daughter.””

Emily’s voice softened.

“She is.””

The answer came immediately.

Relief hit me for half a second.

Then confusion returned.

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone changed the records to make it look like she wasn’t.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Why?””

“Because they wanted you to believe something else.””

“What?””

Emily took a breath.

“Alex, the records were changed before Lily was born.””

The words made no sense.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the hospital bracelet still sitting on the table.

The one an officer had found while searching the room.

A tiny piece of plastic with Lily’s name written on it.

A memory.

A day I thought was perfect.

The day I became a father.

“What does this have to do with Vanessa?””

Emily didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I turned toward my wife.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I stared at her.

“You knew enough.””

She looked down.

“I knew Emily was looking into the records.””

“And?””

“And I knew she was getting close.””

“To what?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“The truth.””

I felt anger rise.

“You keep saying that word.””

I stepped forward.

“But nobody tells me what it is.””

Michael finally spoke.

“Alex…”

I turned.

“No.””

My voice stopped him.

“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””

The pain on his face was obvious.

But I didn’t care.

“I spent six years believing my wife abandoned my daughter.””

I looked at him.

“You let me believe that.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“You watched me suffer.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked toward Lily.

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed.

“Everyone was afraid.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone except me.””

Nobody answered.

Emily spoke quietly.

“Alex, I need you to know something.””

“What?””

“Lily was always yours.””

I closed my eyes.

The words should have comforted me.

But they didn’t.

Because they meant someone had tried to steal even that certainty from me.

“Then whose records were changed?””

A long pause.

Then Emily said:

“Mine.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“They changed my medical records.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because they wanted to create a reason for you to doubt me.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if they wanted to control the story.””

I looked at Daniel.

The lawyer.

The man who had appeared with fake documents.

The man who knew every legal detail.

“What story?””

Emily answered:

“The story where I was unstable.””

The room became silent.

“The story where I was desperate.””

My hands tightened.

“The story where I would do anything to keep Lily.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“That’s what you told me.””

Vanessa cried harder.

“I believed it at first.””

I stared.

“At first?””

She nodded.

“I thought Emily was dangerous.””

“Why?””

“Because someone showed me evidence.””

“Fake evidence?””

She didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

The language of guilt.

The officer stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter, who showed you this evidence?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Daniel immediately looked away.

My stomach dropped.

“Daniel.””

He slowly raised his head.

“I didn’t create it.””

“But you used it.””

His silence answered.

“You were my lawyer.””

“Yes.””

“You were supposed to protect me.””

“I thought I was.””

I stared.

“How?””

Daniel’s expression broke.

“Because I believed Emily was hiding something.””

“And you were wrong.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Daniel looked older suddenly.

Like carrying the secret had aged him.

“I was wrong.””

The room went quiet.

Then Emily spoke.

“Alex, there is one more thing.””

I lifted the phone.

“What?””

“The night I disappeared…”

My heart tightened.

“Yes?””

“I wasn’t taken because of the records.””

“Then why?””

“Because I found the person who ordered the changes.””

I looked at everyone.

“Who?””

Emily’s voice became almost a whisper.

“The person who wanted you to believe Lily wasn’t yours.””

I waited.

Then:

“It was someone in your family.””

My eyes moved toward Michael.

He looked sick.

“Michael?””

“No.””

Emily’s voice was immediate.

“Not Michael.””

I froze.

Not Michael.

Then who?

My mind raced through every person connected to us.

Every person who had access.

Every person who knew our lives.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Oh no.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face had gone pale.

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“I know who it was.””

The room changed.

Everyone looked at him.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Michael.

Then Vanessa.

Then me.

“It was someone who knew both families.””

My patience broke.

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“It was someone who had access to the clinic.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“Someone who worked there.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She worked there.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not her.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Vanessa was involved.””

He turned toward her.

“But she wasn’t the person who changed the records.””

Vanessa started shaking.

“No.””

Daniel continued:

“The person who changed the records was above her.””

“Who?””

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

And said:

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

The room became silent.

My father had been dead for seven years.

He couldn’t defend himself.

He couldn’t explain.

He couldn’t tell me why.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s not.””

“My father had nothing to do with a fertility clinic.””

“He invested in it.””

I stared.

“What?””

Michael nodded slowly.

“I found out later.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew this too?””

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“You knew my father was involved?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“I knew he had business connections.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“Because Emily asked me not to.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because she was trying to find proof.””

I looked at the phone.

“Emily?””

She was crying.

“Alex…”

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of my father?””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“Of what I found after your father died.””

A chill moved through me.

“What did you find?””

Silence.

Then Emily said:

“Your father didn’t change those records to hurt me.””

I waited.

“Then why?””

The answer came slowly.

“He changed them because he was hiding something about Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Emily whispered:

“Lily wasn’t the only child connected to that clinic.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father knew about another baby.””

The room went completely still.

“A baby connected to him.””

I looked at Michael.

Then Daniel.

Then Vanessa.

Nobody looked surprised.

Except me.

The only person who didn’t know.

The only person everyone had protected from the truth.

“Another baby?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Yes.””

My hands began to tremble.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

She was holding a small envelope.

An envelope I had never seen before.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked confused.

“Under my bed.””

I took it from her.

My heart stopped when I saw the handwriting.

Not Emily’s.

Not Michael’s.

My father’s.

On the front were five words:

*For my son, Alex.*

I opened it.

The first line made my blood run cold.

If you are reading this, then they finally told you about the child I tried to protect.

And underneath…

A name.

A name I had never expected.

May you like

A name that changed everything.

*Vanessa Carter.*
