Chapter 3: The Brother’s Secret

The room felt colder after Michael said those words.

“Because the last letter isn’t from Emily.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I stared at the envelope in my hand.

The paper suddenly felt like it was burning my fingers.

“Then who is it from?”” I asked.

Michael looked at me.

For a moment, he looked like my brother again.

The person who taught me how to ride a bike.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

The person who held Lily the day she was born.

Then I remembered the recording.

Get rid of them before Alex finds out.

My brother had been hiding something from me.

Maybe for years.

“Michael,” I said slowly, “answer me.””

He glanced at the police officer.

“This is a family matter.””

The officer stepped forward.

“No. This is now a child safety investigation.””

Michael’s expression tightened.

He looked at Lily.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.””

I laughed quietly.

A bitter sound escaped my mouth.

“You’re right.””

I held up the blue box.

“I don’t understand how my wife could hurt my daughter.””

I pointed toward him.

“And I don’t understand why my brother was helping her hide letters from my missing wife.””

Michael’s jaw clenched.

“I wasn’t helping her.””

“Then explain the video.””

Silence.

That was his answer.

I had spent years believing silence meant someone was thinking.

Trying to find the right words.

Trying not to hurt me.

Now I knew.

Sometimes silence was just someone deciding how much truth they could afford to reveal.

Michael stepped closer.

“Alex, you need to listen to me before you make a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

I looked at Lily.

Her small hands were still wrapped around the blanket.

“My daughter was tied to a chair.””

Michael lowered his voice.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

“You weren’t here when she screamed.””

Michael looked away.

And that tiny movement told me everything.

He knew.

He knew what Vanessa had done.

Maybe not every detail.

But enough.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Michael didn’t answer.

“You knew she was hurting Lily.””

“I knew Vanessa was struggling.””

“Struggling?””

My voice rose.

“She threatened a six-year-old child.””

Michael ran a hand over his face.

“She was trying to protect herself.””

I stared at him.

“From a child?””

“No.””

His eyes moved toward the letters.

“From Emily.””

The name hung in the air.

I hated that name.

Not because I hated Emily.

Because I missed her.

Because every mention of her reminded me of everything I lost.

I looked down at the envelope.

The final letter.

The one Michael claimed was from him.

“What did you do?””

Michael’s face changed.

Not much.

But enough.

“I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

He swallowed.

“The choice to keep this family together.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“You keep saying family.””

I stepped closer.

“But you’re the one who destroyed mine.””

Michael shook his head.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

“I can’t.””

The answer shocked me.

Not because he refused.

Because he sounded afraid.

The same way Vanessa looked afraid.

I opened the envelope.

Michael immediately moved forward.

“Alex.””

The officer raised a hand.

“Stay back.””

Michael stopped.

I pulled out the paper.

The handwriting wasn’t Emily’s.

It was his.

I recognized it immediately.

Alex,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep a promise.

My heartbeat quickened.

I continued.

I promised Emily I would protect you.

I froze.

Emily.

She had trusted him?

The night she disappeared, she came to me because she was scared. She had found something about someone close to us.

I looked at Michael.

Someone close.

She wanted to tell you everything, but she believed you were in danger.

My fingers trembled.

I read faster.

I told her I would handle it. I told her I would keep you and Lily safe.

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Because I knew where this was going.

But I made the wrong decision.

The letter stopped.

No explanation.

No ending.

Just a confession.

I looked up.

“You wrote this?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I wanted you to know the truth someday.””

“Someday?””

I held the letter tighter.

“You had six years.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You were lying to me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Michael looked down.

“I lied.””

The room became silent.

Then Lily spoke.

“Where is Mommy?””

Everyone turned.

My daughter looked at Michael.

Not angry.

Just confused.

“She said she would come back.””

Michael’s face broke.

For the first time, I saw pain on him.

Real pain.

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

He didn’t answer.

I did.

“Because nobody told her dad the truth.””

Michael looked at me.

And I saw something in his expression.

Something that made my heart stop.

Regret.

Not because he had been caught.

Because he had lost.

“What happened to Emily?”” I asked.

Michael sat down slowly.

“She found out Vanessa wasn’t who she said she was.””

Vanessa immediately stood.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Michael continued.

“She found out Vanessa had been hiding something about Lily’s birth.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Michael, stop.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Ma’am, you need to explain.””

She looked at me.

Her lips parted.

But no words came.

I felt like the ground beneath me was disappearing.

“What about Lily’s birth?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Emily found medical records.””

“What records?””

He took a breath.

“Records that proved Vanessa had been involved before you ever met her.””

My mind raced.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“But Emily showed me the documents.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Before I met you?””

She didn’t respond.

“Vanessa?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.””

Those words.

Those four words.

They were the beginning of every lie.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Alex, please.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want another explanation.””

I looked at Lily.

I looked at the letters.

I looked at the woman who had been raising my daughter.

“What did Emily find?””

Michael opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

A loud knock came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

Another officer appeared.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“We found something in your wife’s car.””

Vanessa’s face changed instantly.

“What did you find?””

The officer looked at me.

“A hidden compartment.””

My stomach tightened.

“And inside?””

The officer hesitated.

“A passport.””

I frowned.

“For who?””

The officer looked down at his notes.

Then said:

“Emily Carter.””

The room went completely silent.

I couldn’t move.

Emily’s passport.

Six years after she disappeared.

Hidden in my wife’s car.

Vanessa whispered:

“That’s not possible.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was when I knew.

She wasn’t shocked because the passport was found.

She was shocked because she knew exactly why it was there.

The officer reached into a folder.

“There was also a photograph.””

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

It showed Emily.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

And beside her…

Was Vanessa.

May you like

But the date on the back of the photo was impossible.

Because it was taken three years after Emily was supposed to have disappeared.
