Chapter 7: The Call Nobody Wanted
Nobody moved.
The phone continued ringing in Daniel’s hand.
Emily Carter.
The name on the screen looked impossible.
Like a ghost had found a way to reach us.
I stared at it.
My heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear anything else.
“Answer it,” I said.
Daniel didn’t move.
“Daniel.””
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“You don’t understand.””
I stepped closer.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You’re right.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t understand anything anymore.””
The phone kept ringing.
“Answer it.””
Daniel looked at Michael.
Michael looked away.
That was when I knew.
They were both afraid of what would happen if he picked up.
Not because Emily was calling.
Because of what Emily might say.
“Answer the phone,” the officer ordered.
Daniel finally pressed the button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
“Daniel.””
I closed my eyes.
Even after six years, I knew her.
The softness.
The way she said his name.
The way she sounded like she was trying not to cry.
“Emily,” Daniel whispered.
Everyone in the room froze.
“I told you not to contact him.””
Daniel looked nervous.
“I had no choice.””
“Yes, you did.””
Her voice sharpened.
“You always had a choice.””
I looked at Daniel.
The person who had spent years pretending to help me.
The person who claimed he was protecting me.
And suddenly I wondered how many other choices he had made.
Emily continued:
“Is Alex there?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I reached out.
“Give me the phone.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then slowly handed it over.
I put it against my ear.
“Emily.””
A breath.
Then:
“Alex.””
I almost broke.
Not because I was angry.
Because hearing her say my name reminded me of everything I lost.
“Where are you?””
“I’m close.””
“Close?””
I looked around the room.
“At this point, I don’t care if you’re scared. I need answers.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
My voice cracked.
“Do you know what it was like?””
Silence.
“I raised Lily thinking you left us.””
“I know.””
“No, Emily.””
I swallowed.
“You don’t.””
I looked at my daughter’s bedroom door.
“She asked me if she wasn’t enough for you.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Emily started crying.
“I never stopped loving her.””
“Then why did you let her believe that?””
“Because I was trying to keep her alive.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“Alex, I need you to listen carefully.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“Vanessa wasn’t trying to replace me.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She was trying to erase me.””
My hands tightened.
“I know.””
“No.””
Emily’s voice lowered.
“You don’t know the worst part.””
I felt cold.
“What’s worse?””
A pause.
Then:
“She wasn’t working alone.””
My eyes moved across the room.
Michael.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Three people.
Three secrets.
“Who?””
Emily didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Do you remember the night I disappeared?””
I closed my eyes.
Of course I remembered.
I remembered every second.
The empty house.
The unanswered calls.
The message.
The police report.
The months of searching.
“Yes.””
“I didn’t leave that night.””
My breath stopped.
“What?””
“I was taken.””
The room went silent.
Even the officers stopped moving.
“What are you saying?””
“I was forced into a car.””
My hand shook.
“By who?””
Emily’s voice trembled.
“I never saw his face clearly.””
I looked at Daniel.
At Michael.
At Vanessa.
“But I heard someone’s voice.””
My stomach tightened.
“Whose?””
She whispered:
“Someone you trusted.””
Nobody spoke.
“Emily.””
“I heard him say my name.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Michael.””
The room exploded.
“No.””
Michael’s voice came from behind me.
“No, that’s not true.””
I turned.
He looked horrified.
Not angry.
Horrified.
Emily continued:
“Michael didn’t hurt me.””
Everyone froze.
I looked between them.
“What?””
“He was there.””
My mind struggled to understand.
“You just said you heard Michael.””
“I did.””
“Then explain.””
Emily’s voice broke.
“He was the one who found me.””
I stared.
“What?””
“After I was taken, Michael found me.””
She paused.
“He saved me.””
I looked at my brother.
The anger inside me became confusion.
“You knew?””
Michael’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer came quietly.
“I knew she was alive.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“But you said you found out two years later.””
Michael looked down.
“I lied.””
My chest tightened.
“How much of my life was a lie?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t.
Emily spoke again.
“Alex, Michael tried to bring me home.””
“Then why didn’t he?””
“Because he found out who was behind it.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
“Who?””
Emily became quiet.
“Someone with power.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
I heard fear in her voice.
Real fear.
“Alex, the person who arranged everything had access to your records.””
My eyes narrowed.
“My records?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because they wanted control.””
Over what?
Before I could ask, Lily appeared in the doorway.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned.
She looked scared.
I lowered the phone.
“I’m here.””
She walked toward me.
“Is Mommy coming back?””
The question broke me.
I looked at Emily.
She was still on the phone.
Listening.
Waiting.
I knelt beside Lily.
“I don’t know.””
It was the hardest truth I had ever said.
But I couldn’t lie anymore.
Lily looked at the phone.
“Is that her?””
I froze.
Emily went silent.
Lily stepped closer.
“Mommy?””
A tiny sound came from the speaker.
A sob.
“Lily?””
My daughter’s eyes widened.
She knew.
Children know voices.
Even after years.
“Mommy?””
Emily cried.
“Yes, baby.””
Lily covered her mouth.
Then she ran.
Not away.
Toward the phone.
I put it on speaker.
“Mommy?””
“I’m here.””
“Were you mad at me?””
The question destroyed everyone.
Emily started crying.
“No.””
“Did I do something wrong?””
“No.””
“Then why did you leave?””
There was a long silence.
Then Emily said:
“Because someone wanted me gone.””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
I saw the confusion in her face.
The same confusion she had carried for years.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Enough.””
Her voice shook.
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped away her tears.
“I can’t let this continue.””
The officer moved.
“Sit down.””
But Vanessa didn’t listen.
She looked at me.
“I can explain everything.””
I stared at her.
“You’ve had six years.””
“I know.””
“Why now?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at the phone.
Then whispered:
“Because Emily is about to tell you who really started this.””
A silence followed.
Then Emily’s voice came through.
“Vanessa…”
The way she said her name made everyone freeze.
Like two people who had been waiting years for this moment.
Emily continued:
“You never told him the truth about the night Lily was born.””
Vanessa’s face turned white.
I felt my stomach drop.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time…
She looked like she wanted to run.
Emily whispered:
“Alex…”
“Your daughter’s birth records weren’t changed because of Vanessa.””
I stared at the phone.
“Then why?””
Emily took a breath.
“Because someone was trying to hide who Lily’s biological father really was.””
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
My entire world.
Then at Michael.
My brother.
And I realized why everyone had been afraid.
Because the secret they buried wasn’t about Emily.
May you like
It wasn’t about Vanessa.
It was about me.
