Chapter 6: The Agreement That Never Existed
The document sat on the table between us.
A single piece of paper.
A few signatures.
A date.
And six years of my life rewritten by people who thought I would never find out.
I stared at the page.
My name was there.
My signature.
Or something that looked like it.
But I knew.
I had never signed it.
“Where did you get this?””
My voice sounded empty.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
He adjusted his coat and looked around the room.
At the police officers.
At Vanessa.
At Michael.
Then finally at me.
“I knew this moment would come.””
I almost laughed.
“You knew?””
I picked up the paper.
“You knew I would find out my wife tortured my daughter?””
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“No.””
“Then what exactly did you know?””
He looked at the document.
“That the truth would eventually surface.””
I threw the paper back onto the table.
“Stop talking like this is some mystery novel.””
My voice rose.
“This is my life.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“You weren’t the one waking up every night wondering why Emily left.””
I pointed toward Lily’s room.
“You weren’t the one answering a six-year-old when she asked why her mother didn’t love her enough to stay.””
Daniel looked down.
For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.
But I didn’t care.
Everyone in this room had been uncomfortable while I suffered.
Nobody had been uncomfortable enough to tell me the truth.
“Explain the document.””
Daniel sighed.
“It was created after Emily disappeared.””
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Michael.
Then Daniel.
And suddenly I understood.
All three of them knew something.
All three had protected the same secret.
“Who made it?””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Vanessa requested it.””
My eyes moved to my wife.
Her face went pale.
“You.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“You created a custody agreement?””
“I didn’t create it.””
“Then why is your name connected to it?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel continued.
“She wanted legal protection.””
“For what?””
His eyes moved to Lily’s room.
“To prevent Emily from taking Lily.””
I stared at him.
“But Emily was gone.””
Daniel nodded.
“That was the problem.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She wasn’t legally gone.””
The words made no sense.
“Explain.””
Daniel folded his hands.
“Emily never abandoned Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“I know that now.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
A chill moved through me.
“She never disappeared voluntarily either.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Michael.
He closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting years for this moment.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“Six years ago, Emily discovered what Vanessa had done at the fertility clinic.””
I nodded.
“The altered records.””
“Yes.””
“She confronted her.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She threatened to expose everything.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And you stopped her.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“No.””
“You did.””
“I didn’t want her gone.””
“Then why did she disappear?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was scared.””
I stared.
“That’s your answer?””
“I was scared.””
The officer stepped closer.
“Mrs. Carter, scared of what?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Of losing everything.””
I felt disgust rising.
“So you ruined someone else’s life to save yours.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I thought I could fix it.””
I looked at her.
“Fix what?””
She looked at Lily’s room.
“Everything.””
I turned away.
I couldn’t look at her.
Not anymore.
Daniel picked up the document.
“This agreement was supposed to make sure Lily remained with Alex if Emily ever returned.””
I frowned.
“Then why hide it?””
Because that was the question.
The one nobody wanted to answer.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Because Emily never signed it.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She refused.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew something was wrong.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the document.
“She believed someone was trying to make it appear like she had given up custody.””
I swallowed.
“And she was right.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
The officer walked toward Daniel.
“Mr. Daniel Reed, are you admitting this document is fraudulent?””
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word hit the room.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Michael looked down.
I felt numb.
A fake custody agreement.
Fake messages.
Hidden letters.
A missing mother.
A terrified child.
All connected.
“How many people knew?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Not many.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
He lowered his eyes.
“Enough.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
I walked to the window.
Outside, the police lights still flashed.
Neighbors were watching.
My entire life had become something people whispered about.
But they didn’t know the worst part.
The worst part wasn’t that my wife lied.
The worst part wasn’t that my brother hid the truth.
The worst part was that I had trusted them while they destroyed the person I loved.
My phone was still connected.
Emily was still listening.
“Alex?””
Her voice pulled me back.
I lifted the phone.
“I’m here.””
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
I closed my eyes.
“I need to know something.””
“Anything.””
“Did you ever stop trying to come home?””
The silence that followed hurt.
Then:
“Never.””
I pressed the phone against my ear.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“Because the last time I tried, Vanessa made sure I couldn’t.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Emily’s voice became quiet.
“She sent someone after me.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked up.
Michael looked shocked.
Even Vanessa looked surprised.
“Who?”” I asked.
Emily didn’t answer.
“Emily.””
“I don’t know his name.””
My heart sank.
“But I remember his face.””
The room felt colder.
“What did he do?””
“He told me if I came near Lily again, I would regret it.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Did he hurt you?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
I felt anger rise.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you yet.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who helped me survive is still watching.””
I frowned.
“Who helped you?””
Before she could answer, Daniel suddenly spoke.
“Don’t.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What did you say?”” I asked.
Daniel’s face had changed.
For the first time, he wasn’t calm.
He was afraid.
“Alex, don’t ask that question.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Because Daniel knew the answer.
And whatever it was…
He didn’t want me hearing it.
Emily whispered through the phone:
“Because the person who saved me…”
A pause.
Then:
“…is the same person who helped hide me.””
I looked at Michael.
Then Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
My mind raced.
Someone had helped Emily survive.
Someone had hidden her.
Someone had protected her.
But someone else had helped erase her from my life.
Emily spoke again.
“Alex, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“The person who made me disappear…”
The line crackled.
Then went silent.
“Emily?””
Nothing.
The call had dropped.
At that exact moment, Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
I stepped forward.
“Who is calling?””
Slowly, Daniel turned the phone toward me.
The caller ID was visible.
A name.
A name that made Michael stand up.
A name that made Vanessa start crying.
A name I had not heard in six years.
*Emily Carter.*
May you like
The phone kept ringing.
And nobody moved to answer it.
