Chapter 2: The Woman in the Letters

The police entered my house ten minutes later.

Ten minutes.

That was all it took for my home to become a crime scene.

The same hallway where Lily used to race with her stuffed animals was now filled with uniforms, questions, and camera flashes.

I sat on Lily’s bed while an officer carefully examined the marks on her wrists.

My daughter refused to let go of my hand.

Not once.

“Daddy, are you going to leave again?””

The question hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.

I looked at my little girl.

“No.””

“But you have to travel.””

“I’ll still come back.””

She shook her head.

“No. I mean… are you going to leave me like Mommy did?””

My throat tightened.

I had spent years trying to answer that question.

A question I never thought I would hear from her.

“Lily,” I whispered, “your mom didn’t leave because she didn’t love you.””

Across the room, Vanessa looked up.

The officer noticed.

“So you’re saying there may be another side to this story?””

I nodded slowly.

“There’s something my wife has been hiding.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

The officer raised a hand.

“Ma’am, please sit down.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“I think I’m finally starting to.””

After the officers separated us, I searched through Lily’s room.

The blue box.

That was the only thing I could think about.

I opened drawers.

Checked under the bed.

Looked inside the closet.

Finally, Lily pointed toward the bookshelf.

“Behind my books.””

I moved the storybooks aside.

A small blue box sat hidden against the wall.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

There was a name written on the top.

Not Vanessa’s.

Mine.

And underneath it was a name I had not seen in six years.

Emily.

Lily’s biological mother.

I opened the box.

Inside were dozens of envelopes.

All addressed to Lily.

My daughter stared at them.

“Mommy wrote those.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was standing near the doorway, watching.

For the first time, I saw the truth.

She wasn’t angry.

She was terrified.

I picked up the first envelope.

The date was from six years earlier.

Three months after Emily disappeared from our lives.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where did these come from?””

She said nothing.

“Where did these letters come from?””

Her lips trembled.

“She didn’t want you to have them.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at the letters.

Then at Lily.

“Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“She was going to take Lily away.””

I opened the first letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

I remembered it.

The way Emily wrote shopping lists.

The way she left notes on the refrigerator.

The way she wrote my name.

My hands began to shake.

The first line said:

Dear Lily, I hope one day your daddy lets you know I never stopped fighting to come home.

I couldn’t breathe.

Vanessa saw my face change.

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“You never knew what really happened the night she left.””

I slowly lowered the letter.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

Toward the police officers outside.

Then back at me.

“She didn’t abandon you.””

The room went silent.

“She was trying to expose someone.””

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked directly at Lily.

And said a name.

A name I never expected.

“Your father’s brother.””

My blood ran cold.

Because my brother had been the one who told me Emily left.

My brother had been the one who said she wanted a new life.

My brother had been the one standing beside me when I signed the divorce papers I thought Emily had requested.

And suddenly, every memory I had accepted began to crack.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“You found the letters, didn’t you?””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows why Emily never came home.””

The call ended.

And on the screen, a message appeared.

One sentence.

May you like

One sentence that made my entire body go cold.

*Check the last letter before you trust your wife.*
