Chapter 10: The Brother I Had Married

I read the letter three times.

Each time, the words became harder to accept.

Daniel stood across from me, his face drained of color.

“That's impossible,” he whispered.

My father looked at him.

“Is it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“My father died when I was nine. My mother told me his name was Michael.””

Margaret slowly lowered herself into a chair.

“I'm sorry.””

I turned toward her.

“Mom, what does that mean?””

She covered her face.

“Thomas had another relationship before he met me. He had a son. I knew about him, but I was told the child had been adopted and that Thomas had no contact with him.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Are you saying I'm Thomas Whitmore's son?””

Margaret nodded.

My father picked up the letter.

“Then Thomas knew exactly who Daniel was when he established Danielle's trust.””

“Yes,” Margaret whispered.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

“Because he believed Daniel would eventually try to claim the inheritance.””

Daniel took a step backward.

“That's insane. I didn't even know Thomas was my father.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did Jonathan approach you?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“He told me he had discovered something about my biological father. He said Thomas Whitmore had left behind a fortune and that I might be entitled to part of it.””

My father folded his arms.

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to know where I came from.””

“Understandable. But why involve my daughter?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Jonathan said Danielle was the obstacle.””

I felt sick.

I had married a man who had spent eight months secretly working with someone who wanted to take my inheritance.

And neither of us had known we shared a biological father.

The irony was almost unbearable.

“Did you know about the trust before you married me?”” I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Jonathan told me about it after the wedding.””

“Did you know Thomas was my biological father?””

“No.””

“Did you know he was yours?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did you accept his money?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I thought I was finally getting something that belonged to me.””

My father gave a bitter laugh.

“Something that belonged to you?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I know how that sounds.””

“You helped someone steal from your wife.””

“I thought the documents would be temporary.””

“Your wife was carrying your child.””

Daniel looked at Grace.

“I know.””

My father stepped closer.

“Apparently, you didn't.””

The police officer interrupted.

“Mr. Bennett, we need everyone to remain available for additional statements. We've also requested the original estate records from Whitmore Capital.””

James nodded.

“I'll provide everything from the hotel archive.””

My father looked at him.

“Make sure nothing leaves this building without a documented chain of custody.””

“Understood.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“Why did Jonathan tell you that I was the obstacle?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He said Thomas had made a mistake by leaving everything to you. He claimed I was the rightful heir because I was his son.””

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to.””

That answer hurt more than a denial.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you ever love me?””

Daniel's expression crumpled.

“Yes.””

“Did you marry me because of the inheritance?””

“No.””

“Did you stay because you thought Grace would activate the trust?””

He couldn't answer quickly enough.

I nodded.

That was enough.

My father gently touched my shoulder.

“Danielle, we need to get you and Grace somewhere safe.””

I looked toward the entrance.

“I want to know what happened to Thomas.””

Margaret lifted her head.

“What do you mean?””

“Why did he leave everything to me? Why did he believe Daniel would become dangerous? And why did he write that letter?””

My father looked at the document again.

“There may be another explanation in the original estate file.””

James approached with a security officer.

“Sir, we've located the archive box.””

“Where?””

“In the hotel's basement records room.””

My father frowned.

“Why would the original estate records be here?””

James looked at Evelyn.

She lowered her eyes.

“Because Thomas's attorney deposited them with the hotel when the trust was established.””

My father looked stunned.

“Thomas used this property as a document repository?””

“Only for the family trust,” Evelyn explained.

“The hotel had a private legal archive before it became part of Bennett International.””

James nodded.

“We found a sealed box marked with Thomas Whitmore's initials.””

My father looked at me.

“Let's see it.””

We went downstairs with the officers.

The basement smelled of dust, old paper, and cleaning chemicals. James led us through a corridor lined with locked storage rooms.

At the end was a heavy steel door.

He entered a code.

Inside, metal shelves held decades of contracts and property records.

On the bottom shelf sat a wooden box.

The seal was intact.

My father carefully examined it.

“Thomas's handwriting.””

He opened the lid.

Inside were several envelopes, a thick legal file, and a small black notebook.

The first envelope was addressed to Richard Bennett.

My father opened it.

His hands began shaking as he read.

Then he handed it to me.

The letter explained that Thomas had known about Daniel's existence for years. He had tried to reconnect with his son, but every attempt had been rejected.

Thomas wrote that he had eventually learned Daniel was involved with people who specialized in fraudulent property transfers.

He had also discovered that Jonathan was using Daniel's debts to manipulate him.

The final paragraph was addressed directly to my father.

*Richard, you gave Danielle the one thing I could never give her: a father who chose her every single day. Please don't let my bloodline become more important than the love that raised her.*

My eyes filled.

My father looked away.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I opened the black notebook.

The final page contained a handwritten instruction.

*If the trust is ever challenged, release the sealed video.*

I looked at James.

“Where is it?””

He examined the box.

“There's a small storage drive attached to the inside.””

The officer carefully removed it.

My father stared at the device.

“Thomas recorded something?””

James nodded.

“Apparently.””

The officer connected it to a secure laptop.

A video appeared.

Thomas Whitmore sat behind a desk.

He looked older than I remembered from the photographs in my mother's house.

His voice was calm.

“My name is Thomas Whitmore. If this recording is being played, someone has attempted to interfere with the trust I created for my daughter, Danielle.””

He paused.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

“And I know exactly who will try.””

A name appeared on the screen.

*Jonathan Whitmore.*

My father leaned closer.

Thomas continued.

“My son Jonathan has already attempted to transfer property belonging to Danielle. He has also recruited another family member to help him.””

The recording paused.

Then Thomas said the sentence that made Daniel collapse into the chair behind us.

“His name is Daniel Whitmore.””

Daniel covered his face.

Thomas looked back at the camera.

“But Daniel is not the only person responsible.””

He reached for a document.

“There is a third signature. And the person who signed it is someone Danielle trusts more than anyone else.””

The video stopped.

On the screen appeared a scanned copy of the original agreement.

Three signatures.

Thomas Whitmore.

Jonathan Whitmore.

And the third signature belonged to—

My mother.
