Chapter 6: My Husband's Last Message

Evelyn's warning stopped everyone.

My father looked at her.

“Then who planned it?””

She took a trembling breath.

“Someone much closer to your family than Jonathan.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked toward the glass entrance.

“I can't say it here.””

My father shook his head.

“No more secrets, Evelyn.””

She closed her eyes.

“Your wife knew.””

The words struck harder than I expected.

My mother.

I looked at my father.

“Mom?””

He didn't answer.

Evelyn quickly continued.

“Not everything. But she knew about the trust transfer. She knew Jonathan had approached Daniel. She knew the documents were being prepared.””

My father stepped backward.

“That isn't possible.””

“I wish it weren't true.””

“Why would Margaret hide something like this from me?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because she believed she was protecting Danielle.””

I felt tears gathering.

My mother had always been the person I called when I couldn't sleep.

She had helped me choose Grace's nursery furniture.

She had sat beside me during labor.

She had told me that becoming a mother would change the way I understood sacrifice.

And now I was hearing that she might have known someone was trying to steal my inheritance.

My father took a long breath.

“Show me the folder.””

Evelyn handed it to him.

Inside were bank statements, correspondence, and a printed copy of a trust amendment.

My father read the first page.

Then he stopped.

“Margaret's signature.””

I moved closer.

“Dad?””

He pointed to the bottom.

“She approved a temporary transfer of administrative authority.””

“Over what?””

“The trust.””

I frowned.

“Could she do that?””

“Not without my authorization.””

He turned another page.

There was a second signature.

Richard Bennett.

My father's face changed.

“That isn't mine.””

James leaned closer.

“Sir, are you certain?””

“Absolutely.””

Jonathan suddenly laughed.

“Richard, you're making wild accusations. These are old documents. Perhaps you simply forgot.””

My father looked at him.

“I remember every document I signed involving my daughter.””

Victoria was standing several feet away now.

She no longer looked at me.

She was staring at Jonathan.

“Tell me what you did.””

He ignored her.

“Richard, let's take this into a private meeting room.””

“No.””

“Your daughter is upset. The baby needs rest.””

I stepped forward.

“Don't use my daughter to avoid answering questions.””

Jonathan's eyes narrowed.

“You should be careful, Danielle. You don't understand the financial structure involved.””

“Then explain it.””

“You're emotional.””

My father moved immediately.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Jonathan raised both hands.

“Fine. I won't.””

But his phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

Then he turned away to answer.

I watched him walk toward the windows.

His voice was low.

“I'm at the hotel. Yes. The documents are here.””

He paused.

“No, she hasn't seen the final page.””

My stomach tightened.

The final page?

I looked at the blue folder.

Evelyn noticed.

“There are six pages in the amendment,” she whispered.

James counted them.

“Five.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

“There's a page missing.””

Evelyn's face went white.

“It was there when I left the office.””

“Who had access?””

She looked toward Jonathan.

He was still on the phone.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“Marcus.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“I never touched the folder.””

James spoke sharply.

“Your access card was used in the private archive room yesterday at 11:42 p.m.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“I wasn't working yesterday.””

James checked the records.

“The system says your credentials were used.””

My father turned toward him.

“Then we need to know who used them.””

Marcus looked at Jonathan.

“Sir, I did what you asked.””

Jonathan ended his call.

“Don't say another word.””

But Marcus was already unraveling.

“You told me the records would be replaced. You said nobody would check the originals.””

Jonathan stepped toward him.

“Shut your mouth.””

Marcus backed away.

“I have messages!””

The lobby fell silent.

My father looked at James.

“Secure his phone and preserve every communication relevant to this investigation. Don't erase or alter anything.””

Marcus looked terrified.

“I wasn't trying to hurt anyone.””

“Then tell the truth,” my father said.

Marcus wiped his forehead.

“Mr. Whitmore told me that the hotel would eventually be transferred to a new holding company. He said the Bennett family had already approved it.””

“And the complimentary suites?”” James asked.

Marcus lowered his head.

“Part of the arrangement. I was instructed to make sure Mrs. Whitmore received whatever she requested.””

Victoria let out a bitter laugh.

“So all those upgrades were because of this?””

Jonathan turned toward her.

“Victoria, stop.””

“No. You told me we were being rewarded for our investment relationship.””

“We were.””

“You told me this hotel would be ours!””

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“Lower your voice.””

Victoria stared at him.

Then she took off the diamond bracelet he had given her and placed it on the reception counter.

“You can keep your gifts.””

He looked at her with disgust.

“Don't be dramatic.””

She laughed through tears.

“That's rich coming from you.””

Meanwhile, I was still thinking about the missing page.

My mother.

My husband.

A forged signature.

A hotel that supposedly belonged to me.

Everything was connected, but I couldn't see the entire picture.

My phone vibrated again.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His voice sounded calm.

“Danielle, sweetheart. I need you to listen.””

“Why did you ask me about the blue folder?””

Silence.

Then he sighed.

“Because your father doesn't know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

“Not over the phone.””

“Daniel, did you meet Jonathan on September fourteenth?””

Another silence.

“Who told you that?””

“Did you?””

He exhaled.

“Yes.””

My knees weakened.

“Did you sign anything using my name?””

“No.””

“Did you know someone was transferring the hotel?””

“I knew there was a proposed restructuring.””

“Without telling me?””

“Your father was never going to let you make your own decisions about the trust.””

I stared at the marble floor.

“So you helped Jonathan?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By hiding everything?””

“Danielle, you don't understand how much money is involved.””

I closed my eyes.

“Do you love me?””

The question seemed to catch him off guard.

“What?””

“Do you love me?””

“Of course I do.””

“Then why did you let someone use my name?””

He lowered his voice.

“Because I had no choice.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Everyone has a choice, Daniel.””

He didn't answer.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Your mother made the original agreement. You should ask her why she did it.””

The call ended.

I lowered my phone.

My father was watching me.

“What did he say?””

I swallowed.

“He says Mom made the original agreement.””

My father shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

But before either of us could say anything else, the hotel's security supervisor hurried into the lobby.

“Mr. Bennett!””

My father turned.

“What is it?””

“We checked the archive room. The missing page wasn't removed yesterday.””

“Then when?””

The supervisor glanced at the report in his hand.

“Six weeks ago.””

My stomach dropped.

Six weeks ago.

The day Grace was born.

The supervisor continued.

“And there's something else. The person who accessed the archive used your wife's private security code.””

My father went completely still.

“Margaret's code?””

“Yes, sir.””

I looked toward the entrance.

A familiar black sedan had just pulled up outside.

The driver's door opened.

My mother stepped out.

She was carrying a small white envelope.

And when she entered the lobby, she looked directly at me.

“Danielle,” she said softly.

“Please don't let your father open that folder.””

My father turned toward her.

“Margaret, what have you done?””

My mother looked at Grace.

Then she began to cry.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

She held out the envelope.

“There's something you need to know about your birth. And until tonight, I thought I could take that secret to my grave.””

Inside the envelope was a hospital document.

May you like

My name was printed at the top.

But the name listed beneath *Biological Father* was not Richard Bennett.
