Chapter 4: The Ownership Records Nobody Was Supposed to Find

For several seconds, nobody moved.

My father's fingers tightened around the printed email.

I had never seen him look quite like that before.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Something worse.

He looked betrayed.

“Jonathan,” he said slowly, “what original ownership records?””

Jonathan adjusted his gold watch.

“I have no idea what that email refers to.””

My father placed the document on the counter.

“Your name is on it.””

“Marcus could have sent that without my knowledge.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“That's not true.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Jonathan's eyes narrowed.

“Think carefully before you speak.””

Marcus swallowed.

My father stepped closer.

“Don't look at him. Look at me. Did you send this email?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Did Jonathan ask you to send it?””

“I was instructed to make sure certain documents weren't accessible during your daughter's visit.””

My heart began pounding.

“What documents?”” I asked.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Property acquisition records. Corporate transfer documents. Some archived financial statements.””

“Why would those have anything to do with me?””

He didn't answer.

My father took the paper from James.

“Because Danielle was supposed to become the legal beneficiary of this property several years ago.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He turned toward me.

“Sweetheart, there are things I intended to explain when you were older. I didn't expect to have this conversation in a hotel lobby.””

I shifted Grace against my chest.

“Dad, explain now.””

He exhaled.

“The Grand Sterling wasn't originally purchased through Bennett International. It was acquired through a private family trust. When I established that trust, I designated you as its primary beneficiary.””

I blinked.

“You never told me.””

“I wanted you to have a normal life without people treating you differently.””

“Apparently, that worked beautifully.””

Despite everything, my father almost smiled.

Then his expression became serious again.

“Three years ago, our legal department discovered discrepancies in the ownership records. Someone had attempted to transfer a controlling interest in the property through a series of shell companies.””

James nodded.

“I remember that investigation.””

My father continued.

“The transfer was stopped before it was finalized. I believed the matter had been resolved.””

Jonathan cleared his throat.

“That was an internal corporate disagreement. It has nothing to do with my wife.””

My father turned toward him.

“Then why was your company listed as the recipient of the proposed transfer?””

Jonathan's jaw tightened.

“I'm not discussing confidential financial matters in public.””

“You should have thought about that before arranging secret transactions involving my family.””

Victoria suddenly grabbed Jonathan's sleeve.

“You told me this hotel was part of your investment portfolio.””

Jonathan looked at her sharply.

“Victoria, not now.””

“But you said—”

“I said not now.””

She stepped backward.

I watched her carefully.

For the first time, she looked less like a woman who believed she controlled the room and more like someone who had just discovered that the floor beneath her feet was unstable.

James took out his phone.

“Mr. Bennett, should I contact corporate legal?””

“Yes. And notify the security supervisor. Nobody deletes, alters, or removes any records connected to this investigation.””

Marcus started sweating.

“Sir, I can retrieve the archived files.””

My father turned.

“You've already had access to them.””

“I can explain the missing documents.””

“Then do it.””

Marcus looked toward Jonathan again.

That small movement told me everything.

He was afraid of the man standing beside his wife.

Jonathan took a step toward him.

“Marcus, you're making a serious mistake.””

My father immediately positioned himself between them.

“Don't intimidate my employee.””

Jonathan gave a humorless laugh.

“Your employee? You're suspending him.””

“He is still entitled to protection from threats.””

Emily quietly approached James.

“There's something else.””

James looked at her.

“What?””

She held up a second sheet of paper.

“This was attached to the internal email.””

James read it.

Then he passed it to my father.

I watched his eyes move across the page.

His face went completely still.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn't answer.

I reached for the paper.

The document contained a list of names, dates, and authorization codes.

Near the bottom was a handwritten note.

*Beneficiary signature required. Danielle Bennett.*

I stared at it.

“That isn't my signature.””

My father looked at me.

“I know.””

But there was another line beneath it.

*Original signed copy obtained from family residence.*

My blood ran cold.

“Dad, what does that mean?””

He folded the paper carefully.

“It means someone may have stolen documents from our home.””

I thought about the last time I had visited my parents' estate.

I remembered leaving my old bedroom unlocked while my mother hosted a charity dinner.

I remembered seeing a familiar face in the hallway.

Then I remembered the name.

“Dad,” I whispered.

“Wasn't Jonathan at that dinner?””

My father looked up.

“Yes.””

Jonathan's expression changed.

Victoria turned toward him.

“You told me you barely knew the Bennett family.””

Jonathan didn't respond.

My father took out his phone.

“I'm calling our general counsel.””

He walked several steps away.

I looked down at Grace.

Her eyes were closed.

She had no idea that the hotel where I had been slapped was connected to a secret involving her family's future.

James approached me.

“Ms. Bennett, I want to apologize for what happened tonight.””

“Thank you.””

“Your father has asked us to arrange a private suite while this is investigated.””

I shook my head.

“I don't need special treatment. I need the truth.””

James nodded.

“You'll have it.””

Across the lobby, Jonathan was whispering urgently to Victoria.

Marcus was standing beside the reception desk, staring at his phone.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

He listened for several seconds.

His face drained of color.

“What do you mean, they've already arrived?””

He looked toward my father.

Then he whispered something that made my stomach tighten.

“They found the second ledger.””

My father stopped speaking on his phone.

He turned.

“What second ledger?””

Marcus slowly lowered his device.

And from the direction of the elevators, a woman stepped into the lobby carrying a leather folder.

May you like

My father's former personal assistant.

*The woman who had managed his private documents for fifteen years.*
