Chapter 9: The Night My Daughter Was Born

I stared at the photograph until the words on the page began to blur.

The hospital corridor was unmistakable.

I recognized the blue chairs, the white walls, and the large clock above the nurses' station.

I had spent hours in that corridor waiting for Grace to be born.

Daniel had been beside me.

Or at least, I thought he had.

I looked at the date.

The photograph had been taken at 11:38 p.m.

Grace had been born at 11:51 p.m.

Thirteen minutes before my daughter entered the world, my husband had been meeting Jonathan Whitmore.

“Explain this,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

Then he closed his eyes.

“I can explain.””

“Then do it.””

He glanced at my father.

“Can we speak privately?””

“No,” I answered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Danielle, please.””

“You've had eight months to explain. You've had six weeks since Grace was born. You had an entire marriage to tell me the truth.””

He lowered his head.

“I know.””

My father placed the photograph on the counter.

“Why were you meeting Jonathan at the hospital?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He brought the final documents.””

“What documents?”” I asked.

“The trust amendment.””

“Why?””

“Because the trust became active when Grace was born.””

I stared at him.

“You knew the exact moment?””

Daniel nodded.

“Jonathan had access to the original agreement. He knew the condition.””

My father looked furious.

“And you decided to help him.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Initially, yes.””

I felt as if someone had punched me.

He continued.

“I was approached several months before the wedding. Jonathan told me about Thomas Whitmore and the inheritance. He said Danielle would eventually receive a massive portfolio of properties.””

My father interrupted.

“Why did he approach you?””

“Because he believed I could persuade Danielle to sign over administrative control.””

“And you agreed?””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought it would be temporary.””

I laughed once.

It was a broken, unfamiliar sound.

“You thought you could steal my inheritance temporarily?””

“That's not how I saw it.””

“How did you see it?””

He rubbed his face.

“I was in debt.””

My father stared.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I had invested in a technology company before we met. It collapsed. I owed money to several private lenders. I was trying to recover financially.””

I remembered our early marriage.

Daniel had always insisted on paying for dinners.

He had bought me expensive gifts even when I told him they were unnecessary.

He had once joked that he would never let me pay for anything.

I had thought it was affection.

Now I wondered whether he had been trying to prove something.

“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“So you decided to involve yourself in a fraud?””

He shook his head.

“Jonathan promised that if I helped him secure the transfer, he would clear my debts and give me a share.””

“How much?””

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

The same amount printed on the transaction record.

My father stepped closer.

“And the forged signature?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I didn't forge it.””

“Who did?””

“I don't know.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel, I need you to stop protecting people.””

He looked at the floor.

“Jonathan had someone prepare it. I delivered the documents to the hospital.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted the amendment ready before the trust activated.””

My father shook his head.

“You brought fraudulent paperwork into a maternity ward?””

Daniel began crying.

“I thought I could stop it.””

I looked down at Grace.

She was sleeping peacefully.

The sight of her made everything hurt more.

“You were supposed to be holding my hand that night,” I whispered.

Daniel covered his face.

“I know.””

“You were supposed to be waiting for your daughter.””

“I know.””

“You were supposed to be happy.””

He looked up.

“I was happy.””

“Then why were you standing in a hospital corridor with the man trying to steal her future?””

He had no answer.

My father took the missing page and examined it.

“There's a witness signature here.””

Daniel nodded.

“Jonathan signed it.””

“No. Not Jonathan.””

My father turned the paper toward me.

The witness name was written clearly.

*Margaret Bennett.*

I looked at my mother.

She was still sitting near the fireplace.

Her face had gone pale.

“Mom?””

She stood slowly.

“I can explain.””

I felt tears spilling down my cheeks.

“You signed it?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I didn't understand what it was.””

“Your signature is there.””

“I was told it was a temporary administrative authorization.””

“Mom, you watched me give birth while knowing someone was trying to transfer my inheritance.””

She began crying.

“I didn't know what Jonathan intended to do with it.””

My father looked at her.

“You signed a legal document without reading it?””

“He said it was necessary to protect Danielle.””

“Enough!””

His voice echoed through the lobby.

Margaret stepped backward.

I had never seen my father shout at her.

He took a moment to compose himself.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Why did you bring the envelope here tonight?””

Daniel wiped his eyes.

“Because Jonathan called me after the incident. He said the investigation was getting out of control. He wanted the missing page destroyed.””

“And you refused?””

Daniel nodded.

“I realized I couldn't keep doing this.””

I stared at him.

“When did you realize that?””

He looked at Grace.

“When I saw her in the hospital nursery.””

I shook my head.

“That's convenient.””

He stepped closer.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness. But I need you to believe that I never wanted anything to happen to you or Grace.””

My father looked at the transaction record.

“Then why did you accept the money?””

Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.

“I didn't keep it.””

He placed it beside the photograph.

It was a bank statement showing the $250,000 transfer.

The next transaction showed that the entire amount had been sent to an escrow account belonging to a law firm.

My father examined it.

“Whose law firm?””

“Jonathan's attorney.””

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to buy back the original documents.””

My father stared at him.

“You paid the man who was already stealing them?””

Daniel nodded.

I felt exhausted.

Every explanation created another question.

Every answer revealed another betrayal.

Then one of the police officers approached.

“Mr. Bennett?””

My father turned.

“Yes?””

“We've received confirmation from the hospital. Their electronic records show that someone requested access to Ms. Bennett's maternity file six weeks ago.””

“Who?””

The officer checked his notes.

“An outside legal representative using authorization provided by the patient's spouse.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“I never authorized anyone to access her medical records.””

The officer looked at him.

“Your signature is on the request.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“What?””

My father took the document.

He examined the signature.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Is this yours?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

The officer continued.

“The request included a second attachment. It was a consent form concerning the newborn's legal identity and beneficiary designation.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did it say?””

The officer hesitated.

“Your daughter's name was listed, but the proposed guardian wasn't you or your husband.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“Who?””

The officer looked at the paper.

*Jonathan Whitmore.*

My father immediately reached for me.

“Danielle, breathe.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the document as if he had never seen it before.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

He shook his head.

“I swear.””

The officer placed another page on the counter.

“This was attached to the application.””

It was a declaration stating that Daniel had voluntarily agreed to relinquish certain parental rights in exchange for financial consideration.

The signature at the bottom looked like his.

Daniel stared.

“I never signed that.””

My father looked at the officer.

“Who submitted it?””

The officer turned the page.

“The application was submitted by Jonathan Whitmore's legal representative.””

Then he pointed to the date.

It had been filed two days after Grace's birth.

I looked at my husband.

For the first time that night, Daniel looked genuinely terrified.

“Danielle,” he whispered.

“I didn't know.””

I wanted to believe him.

But I couldn't.

The officer continued.

“We've also discovered that the application was never finalized. However, the legal representative requested an expedited review.””

My father took out his phone.

“Get our family attorney here immediately.””

James approached from the reception desk.

“Mr. Bennett, there's another development.””

My father turned.

“What now?””

James held out his tablet.

“Jonathan's room has been searched by the police. They found a locked safe.””

“And?””

“Inside was a second copy of the trust agreement.””

My father frowned.

“That isn't unusual.””

James swallowed.

“No, sir. But there was also a letter addressed to Danielle.””

I took the tablet.

The letter was dated three months before my wedding.

It began:

*Dear Danielle,*

*If you are reading this, it means Jonathan has finally succeeded in making you believe that the people closest to you have betrayed you.*

My hands trembled.

I read the next line.

*Your father is not Richard Bennett. But he is not Thomas Whitmore either.*

I looked up.

My mother was crying uncontrollably.

My father stared at the screen.

And at the bottom of the letter was a name I had never expected to see.

*Daniel's biological father: Thomas Whitmore.*

I looked at my husband.

Then at the photograph of him standing beside Jonathan in the hospital corridor.

Suddenly, the entire story changed.

Daniel wasn't simply my husband.

He was Thomas Whitmore's son.

Which meant the man who had been helping Jonathan steal my inheritance was not just my husband.

He was my half-brother.

May you like

And the final sentence of the letter explained why Jonathan had been so desperate to control the trust.

*Thomas left everything to Danielle because he knew what his son Daniel would eventually become.*
